Help Save the HOME program!
|
We need your help! The Senate has proposed to severely cut the HOME Investment Partnership program (HOME) in the federal budget. HOME is the only federal housing program exclusively focused on providing states and local communities with the flexible gap financing needed to improve access to safe, decent, and affordable housing. By law, HOME is exclusively targeted to low- and very low-income populations, including seniors, people with disabilities, families with children, veterans, and people experiencing homelessness, and losing funding would be devastating to thousands of families.
Over 20 years, HOME has helped build and preserve more than 1.1 million affordable homes and has served as direct rental assistance to hundreds of thousands of low-income families in urban, suburban, and rural areas alike. The Senate bill proposes a devastating 93% cut in HOME funding, which would essentially eliminate the program altogether. This means that more than 8,800 low-income families will be unable to access tenant-based rental assistance annually, and 39,000 fewer units of affordable housing will be built or preserved annually due to the proposed cuts. Without this critical, emergency assistance, these families will be at an increased risk of homelessness. HOME funding is vital to the work we do at SDHFH, and as a country we cannot afford any further cuts to highly successful, locally driven, and effective federal housing programs, like HOME. Our families and communities deserve better. Please consider contacting your Senators and Representatives, asking them to lift the spending caps and restore HOME funding to at least $1.06 billion, as proposed by the President's 2016 Budget Request.

Join us for Habitat Off Broadway 2015
|
From September 11-15, in the heart of downtown San Diego at Horton Square, we will be building the bones of our newest affordable community. One home will be framed, then broken down into manageable pieces to deliver to its final site. Unless you are already a volunteer, you might not get an opportunity to see our life-changing programs in action. By bringing a build site to the people of downtown San Diego, we have an opportunity to share the mission of Habitat, and to honor our wonderful sponsors and volunteers! We hope you can stop by Habitat Off Broadway!

Meet Samar, Habitat's Newest AmeriCorps Member!
|
"Hi, I'm Samar, an AmeriCorps VISTA working in ReStore Development. I graduated from college this June with a degree in biology from Stanford University. I love volunteering and giving a helping hand to those in need. I have volunteered at a local hospital, trained Emergency Medical Technicians in Nepal, and worked alongside homeless individuals to determine their health needs. I have chosen to dedicate a year of service to San Diego Habitat for Humanity because I believe that decent housing should be a human right, not a privilege. I look forward to working with SDHFH to make a difference in the lives of others." We're so glad you are here, Samar! Thank you for your service!

San Diego Ranks 3rd Worst in Housing Supply
|

A new study by Zillow shows that San Diego ranks third worst in home supply in the nation. While we have one of the best markets for sellers, limited housing inventory makes us one of the worst cities for buyers. Supply is especially limited in the bottom third priced-homes (those valued below $406,450), where inventory dropped nearly 50% in the last year. Lack of supply has also raised the price of homes by nearly 5%. All of this means that first-time homebuyers and those with lower incomes are having an increasingly difficult time affording a home. At SDHFH, we believe that everyone deserves access to safe, affordable housing, and with your help, we are working to make this a reality.

See "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and Support SDHFH! |
Rewriting the rules of love, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas who travels to the big city on her way to a new career - and, she hopes, a potential rich husband. This six time Tony® Award-winning hit musical is filled with frisky flappers, a dragon-lady villainess, and mystery and mayhem that explode into a surprise fairy-tale ending.
"Thoroughly Modern Millie" runs September 11-October 18, 2015 at Coronado Playhouse, the community's theater. During the six-week run of performances Coronado Playhouse is raising money and awareness for San Diego Habitat for Humanity. Along with collecting donations, the cast and crew of "
Thoroughly Modern Millie" will raffle a large scale children's playhouse they constructed to benefit Habitat for Humanity's mission of providing homes for ownership by low income families. This show is sure to entertain! Find out more at www.CoronadoPlayhouse.com.
