OUR MISSION

Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope.
AmeriCorps Members Travel to New Orleans for Build-A-Thon

To commemorate the rebirth of the U.S. Gulf Coast ten years following the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, three San Diego Habitat for Humanity AmeriCorps members and one of our Superintendents traveled to New Orleans this week for building and fellowship during Habitat's annual AmeriCorps Build-a-Thon.

During the event, New Orleans-Area Habitat for Humanity will host more than 400 current and alumni AmeriCorps members from across the U.S. The group, along with local volunteers, will build 10 new homes in the New Orleans East neighborhood in partnership with low-income families.

Since the partnership began 20 years ago, more than 8,000 individuals have served as AmeriCorps members with Habitat for Humanity, helping more than 20,000 families in need of affordable housing, contributing more than 13 million hours of service, raising tens of millions of dollars in cash and in-kind resources and engaging more than 3.1 million volunteers.

SDHFH Volunteer Kimberly Sultz Joins the Peace Corps

SDHFH volunteer Kimberly Sultz will be heading off to Mali, Africa at the beginning of June to serve as a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Extension Agent in the Peace Corps.  Over the next two years, she will be working in rural communities helping to provide the people of Mali with more consistent access to clean water and addressing some of their most pressing sanitation concerns.

In order to become eligible for this position, Kimberly had to demonstrate excellent construction skills, which she learned by volunteering for over 500 hours with Habitat for Humanity in San Diego and Santa Barbara.  During her time with SDHFH, Kimberly learned important skills like how to frame a wall, level a floor, and tile floors and roofs.

"In general, the Peace Corps only looks for people who have been working in construction for several years for these positions, so the training I received from Habitat was incredibly helpful" said Sultz.  "My volunteer work gave me a lot of very practical, technical skills that I will be able to use during my service. I will need to be able to build wells, pour concrete, and build things with brick and mortar--all of which will be easier having volunteered with SDHFH."

We are thankful for the work Kimberly has done volunteering with us, and we are so excited to be part of her journey to Africa!  Best of luck, Kimberly!

Wrapping Up Women Build 2015
With the help of our amazing volunteers, Women Build 2015 was a HUGE success!  We raised over $122,000--double what we raised last year!  We greatly appreciate all of our teams, individuals, and sponsors for donating/raising the much needed funds to advance our mission to build homes, communities, and hope.  We hope you had a fun, empowering experience building with us, and that you always remember the impact you have had on deserving families in San Diego.

We'd like to give a special shout out to our top fundraising team, the Roland Rockstars, who raised $15,000!  They are the winners of the Diamond Hammer Trophy!

Thank you again for your time, support, and hard work during Women Build 2015! Remember, we have builds going on year-round, so if you're itching to get another hammer in your hands soon...come join us!  Please visit our volunteer hub to sign up!
