CURRENT BUILD- LAKESIDE, CA

"BUILDING FOR THE BRAVE" PROJECT UNDERWAY

San Diego Habitat for Humanity is proud to present the first project of the "Building for the Brave" program in Lakeside! Honoring those who have served in the armed forces, the project will provide affordable homeownership for disabled veterans and their families. Currently, four homes have been slated for completion by May, 2014. The homes will be complemented with state of the art finishes outfitted to cater to the special needs of veterans.

"Every Habitat home site will also designate a house specifically for our 'Building for the Brave' program," said Chief Construction Officer Ken Kosman. "It's the least we can do to provide this opportunity for disabled veterans."

Working alongside the construction team, volunteer Jim Cassi expressed enthusiasm in his involvement. "The 'Building for the Brave' concept is great," Cassi said. Additionally, volunteer James Watts said, "Habitat for Humanity is a great cause that allows you to make a difference in someone else's life. Building was a rewarding experience that left me with memories that I will never forget. I encourage everyone to advantage of this program and find the time to give back to our communities."

First Mortgage Paid Off by the Cortez Family
"It's like a dream, I never expected to actually own my own home," said Jose Cortez in 1997, the year that he and his family moved into their new Habitat house. Now, nearly 16 years later, the Cortez family can finally say that this dream has come true. This year Jose and Irma Cortez successfully paid off their mortgage.

Eber Cortez, one of the five Cortez children, was in 3rd grade when her family made the move out of their two bedroom apartment to their new Habitat for Humanity home. Now 24 years old, Eber is attending nursing school and credits the opportunity to Habitat for Humanity and the low cost of housing it provided to her family. "My school is not cheap," she said. "I don't think (my parents) would have been able to afford it as easily."

Habitat not only gave the Cortez family a better home, but provided each member of the family new options to a better life. As Eber elaborated, "Believe in others. They can better themselves." With the money the Cortez family saved through their 0% interest mortgage, they were able to give their children the opportunities to reach their highest potential and continue to give back to the community. We congratulate the Cortez family on paying off their mortgage and we will celebrate with a mortgage burning ceremony at our Family Reunion event.

Never Doubt What a Small Group Can Do

What happens when a small group gets together with a common purpose? Just ask the Palace Garden Craft Group of Chula Vista.

After hearing about our 'Building for the Brave' project, these ladies came up with a plan to support our families in need. They successfully hosted a spaghetti dinner, created crafts for sale, and gained support from local restaurants for a raffle. Through these efforts and contributions from an anonymous donor, the Palace Garden Craft group recently donated $1,650 for San Diego Habitat! Thank you to the Palace Garden Craft Group for making a difference!

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. -- Margaret Mead

San Diego Habitat Partners with The Home Depot Foundation for 'A Brush With Kindness'

On September 25, we teamed up with nearly 500 volunteers from The Home Depot Foundation to build and renovate homes in Escondido. A total of 11 houses were framed on our build site on Elm Street. Volunteers also extended "A Brush With Kindness," to repairing 10 homes in the surrounding community. This opportunity got the ball moving for future community involvement.

"We thought we were going to lose our house and we could not afford to keep it up," said Rosie, a homeowner who worked alongside volunteers to apply fresh paint and put in a new fence. "Now, my husband and I have so much pride in our home!" We are thrilled by the many lives we touched, just like Rosie's, and are enthused at the road this project has paved for neighborhood revitalization efforts.
