CASA Meeting
December 5, 2014
9:30am to noon
St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church
4625 E. River Road
Tucson, AZ 85718
Presenter: Beata Wehr
December 5, 10:30-11:45
Beata Wehr
Beata Wehr is our featured artist at the December meeting on Friday, December 5, 2014. During the morning presentation, Beata will talk about her artist's books and the ideas that inspire them. She will also share some of her works and book catalogs from national and international exhibitions.
Beata's thoughts: Most of my work relates to my experience as a European living in the U.S. I came here 29 years ago from Warsaw. My connection to Poland is very strong, so culturally I belong to the two worlds. This is quite a common experience of many immigrants, so I think that although I am talking about myself, it is more universal. In my work I address the problems with complete understanding on both verbal and non-verbal levels, adaptation, nostalgia, isolation, dislocation and identity.
Beata will also conduct an afternoon mini-workshop at the church from 1:00-4:30. This workshop will focus on working with images, text, materials and structures to create a unique artist's book. An image of an object, a poem, a letter or any other types of writings or items will serve as inspiration for the book you will create.

Message from CASA's President
Greetings, CASA Members!
November 11, 2014
Dear CASA Members,
Due to ongoing health issues, I am resigning from my position as Co-President and Newsletter Editor, effective immediately. I have enjoyed meeting all of you and wish you great success in the future. Have a joyful holiday season!
With Warm Regards,
Anne Lane
President's Message
At the general meeting we had an excellent presentation by Judy Bjorling covering the many ways to do collage. Some fine paintings from the Jacqueline Sullivan workshop were on display and enjoyed by all. It is always a pleasure to see the fine work our artists produce.
However, we are still looking to determine how to keep CASA going with limited human resources, so some of us are planning (hopefully with the board's approval at its meeting on November 12) to conduct a survey. This is a special survey to determine not only what people are doing and what activities they participate in the most, but who is willing and able to do the work involved. We have had many excellent suggestions for making us more visible and gaining more members, but we need to determine what is feasible as well. We hope the survey will help us do that. Please respond to it as lack of response indicates lack of interest in CASA's future.
Finally I want to express my regret at losing Anne Lane as co-president. She has had to resign due to health issues. She has been a great support, especially on getting out the newsletter, and a good friend and advisor. I wish her the best.
Anne Leonard
President

GREAT GIFT IDEA!
YOTO students need water bottles - consider donating reusable bottles which cost more but are much more Earth-friendly! Reasonably inexpensive reusable water bottles may be found at Target, Walmart, and the dollar stores.
****************************************************
There is a continuing need for basic hygiene items such as:
deodorant; shampoo; razors and blades; soap; toothpaste and toothbrushes; floss; tampons; and, shaving cream. Cash donations & gift cards are also welcome!
**************************************************
Youth on Their Own (YOTO) is an ongoing project of CASA. They are in dire need of help right now due to an increasing number of students requiring support. There is a designated place to drop off donations at all meetings, located near the church kitchen.
School supplies (notebooks, paper, pens, pencils, markers, erasers, folders, etc.) are also greatly appreciated. Basic housewares' items like pots and pans, coffee pots, and dishes are needed as well.
DID YOU KNOW: Donations can also be delivered directly to YOTO Headquarters at 1660 N. Alvernon Way!
*Please continue reading the article below for more background information about this worthy organization and our commitment to assist them.

Youth On Their Own (YOTO)
CASA Outreach
YOTO Mission Statement: "Youth On Their Own...is dedicated to support the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance."
At the February, 2014 meeting, CASA members provided enthusiastic feedback to the outreach project for Youth On Their Own (YOTO), Tucson. The primary reason that youth are "on their own" is due to court order.
Any of the following items may be donated: toilet paper; paper towels; deodorant; tooth brush/toothpaste; shampoo and conditioner (2-in-1, preferably); body wash or soap; tampons; notebooks; loose leaf paper; pencils/pens; and, markers
Additional Ideas from CASA members:
- Journals with pens and collage supplies (will be given to YOTO staff for distribution to an interested student)
- soaps, shampoos collected from hotels are welcome
- band aids and other first aid supplies
- non-perishable foods (could go to the YOTO "mini-mall" where youth can get items they need)
- small appliances, e.g. toaster, coffee makers
- Visa gift cards and cash donations
- Toiletry-School Supplies Bag: CASA members may donate items in a repurposed tote bag or backpack, which can be decorated by you, left for the young person to decorate, or left as is.
*A handmade card of any type will be put into each bag with a greeting from CASA.
*CASA members feel strongly that we need to collect for YOTO at each monthly meeting! We need 2-3 volunteers to put out collection boxes, store items for tote bags and/or deliver them to YOTO. Thank you, CASA members!
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR MORE IDEAS, PLEASE CONTACT KAREN MULCAHY AT 206-484-8146 OR JILL BALLESTEROS AT 520-529-4933
