CASA Meeting

November 7, 2014

9:30am to noon

St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church

4625 E. River Road

Tucson, AZ 85718

Presenter:  Judy Bjorling
November 7, 10:30-11:45

 "Is That Collage??

When Collage Takes a Secondary Role as Texture: Drawing, Painting, and Printing on Collage"

 The Artist's Story

As a senior in high school, J.C. Björling (Judy) won a National Scholastic Art Awards scholarship and chose to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. But Judy got diverted into a successful business career. Then, in 1989, the owner of an early Björling watercolor located her and told her that this watercolor had been stolen. He wondered what things she was currently working on. She explained that she had gone back to school, gotten an MBA from Kellogg and had a thriving consulting business with many Fortune 500 clients.

He was apparently not impressed and asked, "So, why is it you are not painting?" This question resonated with her feelings at the time, and she soon returned to her artistic interests. Before long, Judy became a full-time artist.

In 1991, Björling took up sculpting in clay, working from models. Since 1993, her watercolors, drawings, sculpture and prints have appeared in several international exhibits. When she lived in Illinois, there were 14 one- person exhibitions of her work in Chicago-area corporate galleries. Judy's artwork is owned by private and corporate collectors, both here and abroad. She has taught painting and sculpture to students both privately and through various organizations. She currently resides in Oro Valley, Arizona.

Björling first began her painting experience in watercolor, but now works in all media, frequently combining them with collage. Critics have said that the elements of color and movement define her abstract painting style.

However, she believes it is texture that has been most important in the last ten years of her work. She usually creates a highly-textured background and then layers subject matter on top of that, working to create a "push-pull" effect between the subject matter and the background.

Until recently most of her work has been figurative. Her most recent works are in acrylic on canvas and are totally non-objective, i.e., there is no definable subject matter. She uses only three colors: red, yellow, and blue. She may begin a painting by dripping paint on the surface of the canvas or spraying color or water into color and creating an almost-finished work. Then, she may layer many coats of paint over the initial background, scraping off some color with artists' tools-or even kitchen spatulas-and adding heavy deposits of paint in other areas.

"A painting should be interesting," Judy says, "not just the first time you look at it, but every time. You should always find something new to like."

Message from CASA's Co-Presidents

 Greetings, CASA Members!

With two excellent meetings and a board meeting behind us, it is time to pause and consider our future as a vibrant organization for artists. The board is considering several options. Do we envision maintaining the status quo? We have the impression that many members are happy with this. They like the meetings and mini-workshops, and the opportunities to exhibit and get together with other artists. We are looking at spending funds to upgrade our website, particularly the website gallery. Is there a desire among the members to continue to have this gallery? Do members value major workshops? We are already quite short on volunteers and have had to postpone setting up any new major workshops.

Is this status quo option desirable or even feasible in the long run? We continue to need more volunteer help, and encourage members to offer their assistance. Can we add enough new members who are attracted to this status quo scenario? Should we consider changing some things?

The presidents hope to relook at and perhaps redefine our vision for CASA, and publicize it more effectively. Let's have a really inviting website with a more attractive and useful members' gallery. This may include defining, in a less restrictive way, what we mean by  "contemporary." Also, we might make ourselves more receptive to using the new tools available in the technological world that we all live in.

We welcome any suggestions and opinions from the members. Any help or insight you can provide is welcome! This includes updating our website. We are already looking into several sources for this, but would appreciate input from members as to what they want to see.

We are looking forward to a successful year and hope that volunteers will step up soon to the fill the gaps as needed. If you have experience in a particular area, we would appreciate your help! If there is something new to you that you would like to do but are hesitant, consider it a learning opportunity! Take a risk, try something new ~ we will help you!

*BTW:

  • We are still looking for someone besides Jane Coppola to be on a major workshops committee.
  • The exhibits committee is working on finding more venues to show our work. If you have any ideas for new venues and/or can help with the exhibits, please contact Mary Bourret.
  • A reminder: Anne Lane does the newsletter.

Thank You,

Anne Leonard

CASA Outreach

YOTO Mission Statement:  "Youth On Their Own...is dedicated to support the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance."

At the February, 2014 meeting, CASA members provided enthusiastic feedback to the outreach project for Youth On Their Own (YOTO), Tucson. The primary reason that youth are "on their own" is due to court order.

Any of the following items may be donated: toilet paper; paper towels; deodorant; tooth brush/toothpaste; shampoo and conditioner (2-in-1, preferably); body wash or soap; tampons; notebooks; loose leaf paper; pencils/pens; and, markers

Additional Ideas from CASA members:

  • Journals with pens and collage supplies (will be given to YOTO staff for distribution to an interested student)
  • soaps, shampoos collected from hotels are welcome
  • band aids and other first aid supplies
  • non-perishable foods (could go to the YOTO "mini-mall" where youth can get items they need)
  • small appliances, e.g. toaster, coffee makers
  • Visa gift cards and cash donations
  • Toiletry-School Supplies Bag: CASA members may donate items in a repurposed tote bag or backpack, which can be decorated by you, left for the young person to decorate, or left as is.

*A handmade card of any type will be put into each bag with a greeting from CASA.

*CASA members feel strongly that we need to collect for YOTO at each monthly meeting! We need 2-3 volunteers to put out collection boxes, store items for tote bags and/or deliver them to YOTO. Thank you, CASA members!

Mini-Workshops News

The October presenter, Catherine Nash, is a truly unique, gifted and amazing artist! Catherine's presentation was excellent, highly informative and offered CASA members a wonderful opportunity to learn! The exercise Catherine walked us through was a different way of approaching drawing for many of us. It was also FUN! Catherine presented us with the theme that "it's just paper," which those of us who attended the afternoon workshop found quite liberating in actual practice. We all made some very interesting art that afternoon ~ please enjoy photos of this fabulous class!

ATTENTION: Website Help Still Needed!

Currently, there is no one able to manage our website. Among other things, this means there is no one able to update the member gallery on the website. We are hoping to budget for a new site that will be simpler to manage. Right now, we have some leads which may work out, and we will keep members posted on this issue. However, if these prospects do not actually materialize, we will continue to need a web master, so keep your ears and eyes open for one! Thank you.
