CASA Meeting
October 3rd, 2014
9:30am to noon
St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church
4625 E. River Road
Tucson, AZ 85718
Presenter: Catherine Nash
October 3 10:30-11:45
"Learning to See: The Art of Drawing"
A strong foundation in drawing comes from learning specific visual tools to "read" and understand how to successfully interpret what one sees onto paper. How does an artist see? Using images of historically relevant artworks and examples of her own work, Catherine Nash will illuminate some ways of seeing that will shift your experience of perceiving the world around you! Replete with some hands-on exercises for us, this will be an exciting and enriching opportunity for artists of all skill levels.
Catherine Nash Workshop
October 3rd 1-4:30
"Inspired by Nature: Introduction to
Combining Watercolor with Pen & Ink"
Learn to render the beauty of nature using techniques of integrating line and color as we observe and interpret varied natural elements. Our focus will be on both accuracy and an expressive interpretation of our subject while gaining skills in creatively combining the media of watercolor with pen and ink. Historical artists whose life work focused on nature will be presented for our inspiration and study. Discover how observing and creating from nature opens our eyes and senses to the beauty of the world around us.

About Catherine Nash
A long time resident of Tucson, Arizona, Catherine Nash is an artist who freely mixes media in her work to express her ideas. Specializing in Japanese and Western hand papermaking, encaustic painting and mixed media drawing, Nash is a teaching artist who balances her studio work with teaching for the AZ Commission on the Arts, the AZ Sonoran Desert Museum Art Institute, the Learning Curve and in her own Tucson studio.
She has lectured and taught advanced workshops in sculptural artist books, Western and Japanese sheet-forming and sculptural paper across the United States, as well as in professional paper studios in eight European countries, Australia and Japan. Her love of travel and different cultures has inspired her to live, exhibit, research and teach on four continents.
Nash received a B.F.A. in Printmaking and Drawing from the University of New Hampshire in 1980 and spent a year and a half creating prints and drawings in Europe. In 1987, she graduated from the University of Arizona with a Masters of Fine Arts in Mixed Media. Two independent research trips to Japan enabled Nash to study the techniques of Japanese woodblock printing and papermaking in depth.
She has published four educational DVDs on the art of papermaking and has just completed the writing of a book that surveys international artists entitled Authentic Visual Voices. Nash's work has been included by invitation into numerous national and international exhibitions. The landscape, aesthetics and cultures of Japan, her experiences with Native Americans and explorations of the southwestern deserts have influenced and informed her work.
The Artist's Statement
Mesmerized by the expansiveness of space, I am always pondering on my place in the universe and the enigma of consciousness and existence. I am inspired by things that make me wonder and, if I could, I would spend hours staring into the sky. The turning of day to night is a display of vast beauty, subtle color shifting as the earth moves. How varied cultures through history have striven to explain this mystery through mathematics and the sciences I find fascinating. The ancients observed the spiral unfolding of nature within the sprouting of a seed, a radiating flower center, the proportions of the human form, the relationship of the Earth to the solar system, the turn of a galaxy. The spiral is a profound image of the movement of time and space. Miranda Lundy writes, "Sacred geometry charts the unfolding of number in space." In my recent encaustic artworks, images of skies are seen juxtaposed with geometrical diagrams or sacred geometry used to design the floor plans of ancient temples. A personal language of symbols distilled from years of sketchbooks, shelters, nests, boats and bowls; light, water, earth and sky; seeds, branches, roots and new growth, eyes and hands become timeless images that can be "read" allegorically in many ways. I use these symbols to evoke emotive ideas - a poetic, wordless dance within a memory of space. I've learned to not question the internal juxtaposition of imagery, to listen and let the work lead me: a conversation with paper, wax, branches, brush, pen, saw and twine. Message from CASA's Co-Presidents
Welcome to the new season! We are off to a good start. The programs committee has planned an excellent series of programs and mini-workshops. Our September speaker, Miles Conrad, presented a very interesting discussion of how he develops his ides for encaustics, as well as large works in soap, based on bio-forms. We have two new exhibits coming up this fall: St. Francis in October and a new exhibit at Habitat for Humanity in November. Check the website for registration forms.
We recognized 16 new signature members at the September meeting - congratulations to all! A number of members renewed their membership. We remind you that membership must be paid by the October meeting in order to participate in exhibits, workshops and, on the web gallery.
However, we are still in need of help! No one has volunteered to take on planning more major workshops. As a result, there will be no spring workshop. Additionally, this still leaves us without a major workshop committee for the following year as well, unless someone comes forth this fall. We also continue to need more help with exhibits, especially for next year. More venues to show our work would be very desirable. This will be discussed at the next board meeting.
Anne Leonard and Peggy Steffens are investigating updating our website to improve its design and make it more user-friendly. We hope to get something set up soon. We'll keep you posted.
We are looking forward to a successful year and hope that volunteers will be stepping up soon to the fill the gaps as needed. If you have experience, we would appreciate the help. If it is something new to you, think of it as a learning experience. Don't worry, you'll receive help!
A reminder to you: Anne Lane does the newsletter.

Youth on Their Own
Youth on Their Own (YOTO) has become an ongoing project for CASA. A place to drop off personal products will be available at all meetings and someone will deliver them to YOTO to be put in tote bags for distribution. Tote bags and back packs are all still needed as well. If you have simple housewares like pots and pans, coffee pots, dishes, etc. that you are ready to move on to a new home, these can be delivered directly to YOTO headquarters at 1660 N. Alvernon Way.

Youth On Their Own (YOTO)
CASA Outreach
YOTO Mission Statement:"Youth On Their Own ...is dedicated to support the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance."
At the February, 2014 meeting, members provided enthusiastic feedback to the outreach project for Youth On Their Own (YOTO), Tucson. YOTO currently has just over 800 youth (to age 21) registered. The primary reason that youth are "on their own" is due to court order.
Toiletry-School Supplies Bag:
CASA members will provide a repurposed tote bag or backpack; tote bags can be decorated by you OR left for the young person to do it OR left as is.
Any of the following may be donated: toilet paper, paper towel, deodorant, tooth brush/toothpaste, shampoo (2 in 1 if you can), body wash or soap, girls - tampons, notebook, loose leaf, pencils, pens, markers, pencil crayons
Additional Ideas from CASA members:
-journal with pens and collage supplies (will be given to YOTO staff for distribution to an interested student)
-soaps, shampoos collected from hotels are welcome
-band aids and other first aid supplies
-non-perishable foods (could go to the YOTO "mini-mall" where youth can get items they need)
-small appliances e.g. toaster, coffee maker, etc. (Cathy Lacey will deliver)
-we did a collection ($81.00) to buy Visa gift cards and/or essential items; cash donations can still be made
-for members unable to assemble a bag of items, volunteers will stay following the March meeting to assemble whatever loose items have been brought in
-a handmade card of any type will be put into each bag with a greeting from CASA
CASA members feel strongly that we need to collect for YOTO at each monthly meeting. We will need 2-3 volunteers to agree to put out collection boxes, store items for tote bags or deliver them to YOTO.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR MORE IDEAS, PLEASE CONTACT CATHY LACEY AT: c.lacey@sasktel.net

S.O.S!
ATTENTION: Website Help Needed!
Currently, there is no one person who is able to manage our website. Among other things, this means there is no one able to update the member gallery on the website. (We thank Peggy Steffens for the help she has given, but she is not able to do this.) While we could certainly use a web master/mistress to rework the whole site, we need at least someone who knows how to enter pictures in the system we currently have. Several possibilities that we had hoped for have not panned out. We are hoping to budget for a new site that will be simpler to manage. This is definitely on the agenda for the coming season. Please, if you have any skills, contacts or suggestions let us know!

Major Workshop by Jacqueline Sullivan
Contemporary Textural Collage
Wed., Oct. 22-Fri., Oct. 24, 9 AM-4 PM
Unitarian Universalist Church, Goddard Hall
4831 E. 22nd St
Course Description
This class is about building highly textural collages and collage elements. Texture will be formed in many ways including use of miscellaneous acrylic media and other household items. On the first and second day of the workshop, students will work on paper and develop several textures. During this process, they will learn about using several acrylic mediums as glues and textural elements. These textural elements will then be painted with acrylic paints and students will review color theory and learn about paint additives. Metallic foils and paints may be added to highlight textured areas of the paining. Small collages will be made combining these textural pieces in various ways, including layering and weaving. On the last day of the workshop, students will switch to working on canvas and develop a highly textured mixed media abstract, using the processes that they learned on the first 2 days. Design qualities of an Abstract Painting is an integral part of the class. Each student will receive a book with instructions and color photos for the various techniques that are covered in the class.
