CASA Meeting

April 4, 2014

9:30am to noon

St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church

4625 E. River Road

Tucson, AZ 85718

Presenter:  Jeanne Fellow

                    "GOING 3-D WITH ACRYLIC   INKS"

Jeanne Fellow

"As a painter, color is my language, my brush is

my voice and my finished artwork is my testimony."

Betsy Dillard Stroud - watercolor artist and author

This quote from Betsy Dillard Stroud is one that Jeanne identifies with in her artwork, her teaching and her life.

Jeanne Fellow has been experimenting with various two and three-dimensional art forms for over 30 years. Initially she focused on watercolor and acrylic painting. For the past 13 years she has been creating artwork using FW Acrylic Inks.

In the past three years she has developed innovative three-dimensional techniques not available using traditional watercolor or acrylic paints.

In her presentation and demonstration she will discuss and show us innovative three-dimensional techniques that she has developed using FW Acrylic Inks.

In her mini-workshop, "Making Waves", we will explore painting with the FW acrylic inks on watercolor paper in a free and flowing style.   We will then mold the painted artwork into "Waves", using an innovative technique that creates beautiful wall sculptures.

Jeanne currently teaches classes based on her various techniques at the Blue Raven Art School in Tucson, AZ.   The classes are designed to encourage the students to allow their creativity to flourish in a supportive and experimental atmosphere. She also sells her artwork at the Practical-art Gallery in downtown Phoenix and at various shows throughout the Tucson area.

Spring Three-day Workshop with Josh Goldberg
March 12,13, and 14, 2014

"Finding Your Mark: The Gestural Pleasures of Painting"

This is a workshop with a dual function. First, it will focus on understanding and using the brush in various ways to expand the participant's "vocabulary" of forms and expressions. By knowing what the brush can and cannot do, the participant will be able to renew the energy of their imagery, gesture, and composition with personal, symbolic, and metaphorical meaning. Second, participants will learn to critically look at one's work (self-critique), as well as how to present the work to best advantage, and the issue of titles.

Supply List:
acrylic paints, palette (something to mix paint on), water bucket, tarp, masking tape, large brushes, gel medium, spray bottle, scrapers. If working on paper, the paper must be gessoed and taped to a board prior to the workshop. Canvas must be gessoed as well prior to class. Please bring more than one or two sheets of paper and more than one canvas. If you wish to work large one can put two sheets or canvases together to give added scale.

Message from the President of CASA

Anne Leonard, our vice president, and I have worked diligently at trying to fill out a working team to lead CASA for the next year. At the March 7 meeting we elected three members of the board - vice president, Anne Leonard, secretary, Karen Samson,  and treasurer, Susan Ettl. We have an exhibits chair and a membership chair. This leaves the major parts of the activities of the organization uncovered - president, programs and workshops, both major and mini. CASA has always existed mainly as an educational organization run by volunteers. Anne and I have been unable to pull together this team of leaders. We sincerely hope that the membership of CASA can do this.

After much thought and discussion with trusted advisers, I have made a difficult decision. Knowing myself, as I do, I am very aware that, if the end of my term as president comes at the end of May and there is still no complete team of leaders to take over and I stay around, I will pick up the slack. It is necessary for my health and well-being to let go of my emotional attachment to the organization and the sense of responsibility I feel for its success. In order to ease the energy drain that I am feeling, if things do not change between now and May 31, I feel I must leave CASA and not renew my active membership.

I trust that in an organization of almost 140 members, there are people who can take over the leadership and oversight of CASA and perhaps move it in new and more exciting directions. Anne and I leave it with you to find each other.

Going Forward: Some Suggestions for Developing Leadership

Being a leader doesn't necessarily have to be a huge undertaking. Each person has their own leadership style - some can be organizers, some upfront people, some worker bees who stay in the background. One good way to manage leadership is to share it. A team of two, three or even more people, each utilizing their unique style of leadership, can work together to get a job done, whether it be the presidency or a committee working on programs or workshops.

Get together with your friends - people you enjoy being with and can work together with effectively. Think about how you could work as a team to get the jobs done that can keep CASA afloat. I think you will find that doing these things together can be a growing, fun experience for you. Sometimes if we step out of our comfort zones, we discover that we can do things we never dreamed we could do.

New Show Going up at Habitat in April

A new show will be going up at Habitat for Humanity Tucson in April. The jury will be at the April meeting. This show will remain at Habitat until October. You can download a prospectus and guidelines for presentation below.
Youth On Their Own (YOTO)
CASA Outreach, March 7-2014

YOTO Mission Statement:"Youth On Their Own ...is dedicated to support the high school graduation and continued success of homeless youth by providing financial assistance, basic human needs and guidance."

At the February meeting, members provided enthusiastic feedback to the outreach project for Youth On Their Own (YOTO), Tucson. YOTO currently has just over 800 youth (to age 21) registered. The primary reason that youth are "on their own" is due to court order.

Toiletry-School Supplies Bag:

CASA members will provide a repurposed tote bag or backpack; tote bags can be decorated by you OR left for the young person to do it OR left as is.

Any of the following may be donated: toilet paper, paper towel, deodorant, tooth brush/toothpaste, shampoo (2 in 1 if you can), body wash or soap, girls - tampons, notebook, loose leaf, pencils, pens, markers, pencil crayons

Additional Ideas from CASA members:

-journal with pens and collage supplies (will be given to YOTO staff for distribution to an interested student)

-soaps, shampoos collected from hotels are welcome

-band aids and other first aid supplies

-non-perishable foods (could go to the YOTO "mini-mall" where youth can get items they need)

-small appliances e.g. toaster, coffee maker, etc. (Cathy Lacey will deliver)

-we did a collection ($81.00) to buy Visa gift cards and/or essential items; cash donations can still be made

-for members unable to assemble a bag of items, volunteers will stay following the March meeting to assemble whatever loose items have been brought in

-a handmade card of any type will be put into each bag with a greeting from CASA

CASA members felt strongly that we need to collect for YOTO at each monthly meeting. We will need 2-3 volunteers to agree to put out collection boxes, store items for tote bags or deliver them to YOTO.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR MORE IDEAS, PLEASE CONTACT CATHY LACEY AT: c.lacey@sasktel.net

Update on the YOTO Project

The response to our call for bags and toiletries for the youth was overwhelming. Two members of the staff at YOTO were present at the March meeting and we heard from one of them. Michelle Cooper, the director of post secondary education, told us about what their mission is and gave us some background on a few of the students who are now in college or other post high school education programs. We passed the donation basket for the second month in a row and were able to hand over a large check to YOTO for them to purchase the things that are most needed by the youth.

"THE ART OF RE-CYCLE"

Where trash becomes inspiration for creativity!

CPAC ART SHOW 2O14

APRIL 2ND TO APRIL 30TH

CPAC is pleased to announce a visual art exhibition, The Art of Re-cycle. The purpose of this exhibition is to demonstrate creative ways to utilize elements that are considered junk. Artists are being asked to produce artwork that consists of at least 75% re-cycled, discarded, repurposed and/or found materials. This includes items that would be found in your garage, in your waste paper basket, on a walk, including natural objects such as feathers, bones, sticks, bark, etc. What better way to exercise your imagination than to produce artwork by re-using supplies to help our environment and planet!

Arizona artists are invited to participate in this juried exhibition at CPAC. Artists are encouraged to provide an artist statement describing the philosophy or aim of your work including why you work with materials that would be discarded. These can be included on the entry form or provided on an attachment.

Each artist can submit up to three pieces. The entry fee is $25 for CPAC members and $35 for non-members. All artwork must be for sale. CPAC will retain 25% of the sale & handle the paper work. Please remember this as you price your work on your entry form.

Prizes: First Place - $300, Second Place - $200, Third Place - $100

Juror: David Adix
