CASA Meeting
January 3, 2014
9:30am to noon
St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church
4625 E. River Road
Tucson, AZ 85718
Presenter: Andy Burgess
January 3, 2014
Andy started making collage about twenty years ago after being inspired by a retrospective of the work of Kurt Schwitters in Paris. His first collages were made with "lo-fi" materials such as tissue paper and masking tape but he began to incorporate ticket stubs, matchbooks, cigarette labels, vintage and found papers, as well as hand painted and stained papers made using ink and acrylics.
When he started making cityscape collages, transforming his favorite cities such as New York, Chicago & San Francisco into glittering mosaics of color he realized that the vintage matchbooks with their advertising slogans, hotel and restaurant signs, proved to be the perfect building material for these pieces, creating an atmosphere both evocative and nostalgic.
Built up slowly and methodically with the precision of the miniaturist, each collage could be described as a visual poem filled with humorous and playful anecdotes. These fanciful cityscape collages fuse the mythic past with the contemporary skyline.

This mini-workshop with Andy Burgess will focus on creating art utilizing found papers including envelopes, ticket stubs, clothing labels, wrapping paper, anything interesting! Andy avoids shiny paper, magazines and Xerox copies. He recommends searching thrift stores and antique malls for vintage paper from 1920 - 1970. If you look very close at Andy's artwork you will be able to identify the vintage materials. Andy will teach us how to create an "Urban Collage" using vintage papers.
Once registered you will receive a supply list via email for this mini workshop.

Spring Three-day Workshop with Josh GoldbergMarch 12,13, and 14, 2014 "Finding Your Mark: The Gestural Pleasures of Painting" This is a workshop with a dual function. First, it will focus on understanding and using the brush in various ways to expand the participant's "vocabulary" of forms and expressions. By knowing what the brush can and cannot do, the participant will be able to renew the energy of their imagery, gesture, and composition with personal, symbolic, and metaphorical meaning. Second, participants will learn to critically look at one's work (self-critique), as well as how to present the work to best advantage, and the issue of titles.
Supply List:
acrylic paints, palette (something to mix paint on), water bucket, tarp, masking tape, large brushes, gel medium, spray bottle, scrapers. If working on paper, the paper must be gessoed and taped to a board prior to the workshop. Canvas must be gessoed as well prior to class. Please bring more than one or two sheets of paper and more than one canvas. If you wish to work large one can put two sheets or canvases together to give added scale.
