Presenter: Miles Conrad

"The primary purpose of showing your work is showing your work. Selling it might come later." J.R. Compton of DallasArtRevue

We as art creators have many lingering questions about presenting our work. Miles Conrad, visual artist, instructor, and founding director of Conrad Wilde Gallery will guide us through the process in his presentation entitled, "Making A Breakthrough."

As a visual artist, including his very notable encaustics, he has received the Award of Excellence from the Contemporary Art Society of the Tucson Museum of Art for the Arizona Biennial in 20ll. He also adds to his credits many solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions in Tucson and throughout the United States. He brings with him a background rich in art and leadership education and works from a studio granted by the Artist-In-Residence program at Process Museum in Tucson.

Professionally, he is a full time faculty member at the Southwest University of Visual Art in the MFA program. His publications have been included in Luxe magazine, The Desert Leaf and numerous other publications throughout Arizona. Conrad Wilde Gallery, founded in 2005, hosts innovative exhibitions and fosters a community of support for both established and emerging artists. He has provided the Tucson arts community with professional leadership and growth in the visual arts.

Applying for Signature Membership Status

Signature Membership is conferred on active members who have been accepted into three juried exhibits. We no longer issue certificates to member participants in shows. The exhibits chair keeps a record of what shows you have been in. When you feel that you have been in three juried exhibits, you need to contact the exhibits chair, currently that is Carol Chambers, carolchambers@q.com, who will double check with her records and then inform the membership chair that you now have signature status. Your name will be listed in the next newsletter and on the Signature Members' roster.
Letter from the President

I just returned from sitting with the show at Agua Caliente. It is gratifying to have people make good comments on the work in this show. It is good work - interesting and varied. A show we can be proud of. CASA has grown so much in the nearly ten years that I have been associated with it - not only in size, but also in the quality of the work that we show to the public. I am happy to have been a part of that growth.

In the next month, we will be looking for people to help us carry on the work that is pulling us into the 21st Century of art in Tucson. Please take the time to think about how you might be a part of leadership in CASA. We will be looking for these officers and chairpersons:

Vice President - preferably someone who would be willing to be groomed for the job of president in 2014-15 when that position will become open. As Vice President, you would have very little expected of you - it is the easiest job on the board.

Treasurer - this position requires an understanding of the computer program Quicken and the ability to be organized and reliable.

Program Chair - labor intensive in the summer months as the programs for the next year are searched out and contracts are signed for the coming season. This person is responsible for the set up of the meeting space for the program each month. This chair works closely with the mini-workshop chair.

Mini-Workshop Chair - works with the program chair to set up the programs and mini-workshops for the year, is responsible for seeing that the location and set up for these is provided and takes registration and collects fees for the minis.

Newsletter/Website Chair - generates the newsletter September through May using Constant Contact's program and templates and works with the webmaster, Ryan Lanigan, to keep the website current by feeding him the information that should be on the site for the year.

The current chairpersons are available and willing to help train new people.

If you have ever thought that the programs didn't meet your needs or expectations; if you have questioned the way the newsletter is designed and published; if you have felt that the mini-workshops are not things that you need; or if you are just generally not happy with the direction CASA is going, then you need to consider putting your energies into giving some new perspective to the leadership team by getting on board.

Marti White, President

Your Important Input Is Needed

In the next few months, your board members will be planning the programs and events for the year 2013-2014. We would really like to have your input on what you would enjoy experiencing in the next year. Nancy Norton has put together a survey to get a feeling for your opinions. Since so many of you leave when spring comes to the northern states, we would like you to take the time now to answer these questions and e-mail or send the completed survey by snail mail to Nancy before you leave (or as soon as possible if you are not leaving). It really does help in making plans to have your input. A survey is attached to this article. You can download the pdf, answer the questions and copy paste into an e-mail for Nancy or print it off, fill it out and mail it to her. Please do take the time to do this!

Habitat for Humanity Benefit Show Coming in April

The long awaited news about a benefit show for Habitat for Humanity is finally a reality. After months of planning and negotiating with Habitat, we have a plan and some details for you.

There is the potential for a very large show so we will be opening up the submissions to paintings or assemblages per entrant. The entry fee will be low. This show will be juried on April 5,2013 at our regular meeting. Habitat will be having two receptions - one by invitation only to their most loyal supporters and another open house. These are scheduled for April 11 and 12, 2013. All exhibiting artists are invited and encouraged to attend both events - all CASA members are encouraged to attend the open house. A 25% portion of any sales will go to Habitat. Artwork will go home with the purchaser and the artist can replace the spot with another painting. Habitat will allow us to leave the artwork up as long as the artist is willing to leave it - it will still be for sale throughout that time period. Habitat supporters are encouraged to purchase artwork that will stay in the building.

So we have three months to create some really wonderful artwork for this show. There is a very loose theme which can be interpreted broadly. Habitat stands for HOPE, HOME, FAMILY, and COMMUNITY. Other themes are CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING, HOUSES, PLAYGROUNDS, ETC. Habitat wants the work to be saleable, so if these themes are not where you are right now, do your best work and submit it.

In addition to the benefit show, a group of CASA members has created a collaborative work that will become a permanent installation in the entryway of the building which is located on Mountain Avenue, just south of Prince Road. We hope to be having a dedication of that work with media coverage at some point in the spring. There will be a plaque on the wall identifying CASA as the creators of the artwork.

March 20, 21 and 22, 2013, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Unitarian Universalist Church Goddard Hall

4831 East 22nd Street

This workshop incorporates metal textures and color with traditional and non-traditional elements as you create exquisite metal leafed papers on acrylic backgrounds. We will use transfer techniques and patinas to further develop surfaces and to find new freshness in your work through an intuitive design approach by working with carefully selected fragments, letterforms, natural and industrial objects. Copper, brass, silver sheet gold and Palladlium leaf may be used. This fun and creative exploration will culminate in mixed media collages or assemblages.

The Pima County Fair

April 18-28, 2013

The entries for the Pima County Fair are due March 9, 2013. The entry forms can be found at www.pimacountyfair.com.

Last year when I entered a couple of pen and ink drawings, the collage section was simply horrid. A blue ribbon was not awarded for this division. The entry fees are very inexpensive for the number of people who view the art show. I realize that most of you discount this venue, but all it takes to raise the level of the entire show are a few great Pima County artists willing to share their talents. Hope to see you there!
