Following the Moon Deanna Thibault |
Deanna Thibault
"Paper Landscapes"
Working with paper allows us to reconstruct that which has been removed from nature and once again create a thing of beauty. Artist Deanna Thibault knows both the beauty and versatility of paper. In fact, it is all about paper; painting papers in different ways, using bought papers, embellishing papers with pens, crayons, and other products, and finally cutting or tearing to create different sizes and shapes. Skillfully she arranges and attaches these papers to create an impressionistic or abstract composition which incorporates the strong elements of design: varying sizes, shapes and colors often unified by her successful use of line.
Always on the cutting edge, her new work entitled "Paper Landscapes," reflects a new interpretation by attaching related papers in a new fashion and using a fresh approach to using papers. These landscapes seem to float, expressing a surreal sense of freedom. One of the pieces was included in the show "Timeless Meditations" and "Paper Flower Garden" will be included in the upcoming "Arizona Aqueous" both at the Tubac Center for the Arts. Take time to check her website for both exhibitions and learning opportunities: www.thibault4art.com.
Deanna has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career in both national and international shows. One of the most competitive is the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. In 2009, she received the Dana Bartlett Award. Add all of this to her ongoing love of teaching adults for over 35 years and her leadership and signature memberships in many art organizations - she is one bundle of energy and all for the love of art.
As a former President of CASA welcome her as she presents and demonstrates her skills in composing this new work. She is one of us and enjoys sharing this adventure that should always be fun. Her workshop which follows will add new tools to that art toolbox. She has much to share!

Letter from the President
Happy New Year to all of you! We are off to a great start with a wonderful presentation by Josh Goldberg and an inspiring workshop that followed. Josh is a Tucson treasure and we were so fortunate to have him with us for our January meeting.
The exhibit at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild is up and looks superb! We can be very proud of how CASA is presented to the community in this exhibit. Please come to the reception on Tuesday, January 15 at 5:30 and listen to the reactions that people are having to this show.
We will be hanging the show at Agua Caliente at the end of the month. Every person who is exhibiting in this show will be asked to sit the gallery for a few hours and even if you are not in the show, it is fun to talk to the public about CASA. Please do your part. This park is well used by the public and many people do come in to see the art exhibits, so it is a great chance for you to meet the public and talk about CASA and your artwork.
The board of directors will be meeting on January 23. At this meeting the board begins to work on plans for next year and this includes looking at a new slate of officers. I would encourage you to think about how you might be a part of the workings of CASA next year. We really can use new ideas and renewed energy on the board. It seems that we rotate these jobs between a very few members of CASA and we do get tired and our ideas run low. Perhaps you have ideas for how we can improve the programs and the activities of CASA. It is a great way to give back and also a good opportunity to get to know other members and make new friends. Consider saying "yes" if you are invited to be nominated for an office or committee chairmanship. Better yet consider VOLUNTEERING!

Habitat for Humanity Benefit Show Coming in April
The long awaited news about a benefit show for Habitat for Humanity is finally a reality. After months of planning and negotiating with Habitat, we have a plan and some details for you.
There is the potential for a very large show so we will be opening up the submissions to four mixed media paintings or assemblages per entrant. The entry fee will be low. This show will be juried on April 5,2013 at our regular meeting. Habitat will be having two receptions - one by invitation only to their most loyal supporters and another open house. These are scheduled for April 11 and 12, 2013. All exhibiting artists are invited and encouraged to attend both events - all CASA members are encouraged to attend the open house. A 25% portion of any sales will go to Habitat. Artwork will go home with the purchaser and the artist can replace the spot with another painting. Habitat will allow us to leave the artwork up as long as the artist is willing to leave it - it will still be for sale throughout that time period. Habitat supporters are encouraged to purchase artwork that will stay in the building.
In addition to the benefit show, a group of CASA members has created a collaborative work that will become a permanent installation in the entryway of the building which is located on Mountain Avenue, just south of Prince Road. We hope to be having a dedication of that work with media coverage at some point in the spring. There will be a plaque on the wall identifying CASA as the creators of the artwork.
So we have three months to create some really wonderful artwork for this show. There is a very loose theme which can be interpreted broadly. Habitat stands for HOPE, HOME, FAMILY, and COMMUNITY. Other themes are CONSTRUCTION, BUILDING, HOUSES, PLAYGROUNDS, ETC.
Habitat wants the work to be saleable, so if these themes are not where you are right now, do your best work and submit it.

This workshop incorporates metal textures and color with traditional and non-traditional elements as you create exquisite metal leafed papers on acrylic backgrounds. We will use transfer techniques and patinas to further develop surfaces and to find new freshness in your work through an intuitive design approach by working with carefully selected fragments, letterforms, natural and industrial objects. Copper, brass, silver sheet gold and Palladlium leaf may be used. This fun and creative exploration will culminate in mixed media collages or assemblages.
