On the Painter's Path: Self Surrender and the Flowers of Happiness
"For me painting is a mode of being inthe world - a koan not to be solved, but lived." __Josh Goldberg
Josh Goldberg is an artist, writer and instructor with a deep interest in Taoism and Chinese poetry. Born and raised in Philadelphia, he became one of the youngest members of the Philadelphia Art Museum. Saturday afternoons were spent "copying" the old masters into sketchbooks, other days were spent drawing from nature or at home creating cartoons. Formal training began at Tyler School of Fine Arts with instruction from Leon Golub and David Smith. While exhibiting locally he studied Chinese and Japanese art, Zen and Buddhism, finally going to Japan on a fellowship. He later received an MA in Asian Studies and Art History from the University of Michigan.
Tucson became home to Josh and his family in 1979. He began work at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, and received an MA in Asian Studies. His connection with the work of both local and national artists and his home in the desert gave vision to a series of small haiku-like abstracts related to the work of favorite poets and writers. His work moved to photo collage and laser printing creating surreal imagery. His current exhibits include large abstracts in acrylic and oil, oversized work on paper and large charcoal drawings. His work may be viewed on line at www.joshgoldbergtucson.com or locally at Davis Dominguez Gallery, Atlas Gallery or The Drawing Studio, where he is also an instructor. Other galleries include Hernandez Gallery in Scottsdale and Susan Street Gallery in Solana Beach, California. He is the recipient of several National Endowment on the Humanities awards, has been an Artist in Residence for the Arizona Commission on the Arts and has received many other awards.
Josh's work both invites and creates an experience of the viewer's own choosing. One cannot walk away and not be touched by his gestural brushstokes, large expanding colorful planes, and veiled washes. Each painter must find their own path. His "Painter's Path" will create an awareness of the process for each of us - he is not to be missed.

Letter from the President
Such a busy time of year for all of us. The holidays always seem to come way too fast and furiously for me. With all the extra activities and then the added responsibilities of the organizations that we all belong to, time to just relax and enjoy all the goodness of the season seems hard to carve out of the days and hours. I do want to wish all of you joy and memorable moments in the weeks ahead. Allow yourselves the pleasure of just experiencing the sounds, smells, tastes and warmth of good friends and family and celebration.
I am very excited about the two shows that we have coming up right after the New Year. The assemblage show at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild is one you won't want to miss even if you are not one of the twenty artists who are exhibiting in that show. This is such a new direction for many of us - a move into unfamiliar territory and I can only say, "WOW!" CASA has so much creativity that has been hiding behind paint and paper! These pieces of assemblage work show a whole new mixed media world for many of our artists. Please try to be at the opening reception of the show on January 15, 2013, from 5:30-7:30pm. It is going to be an exciting show.
Making the Southwest and its flora and fauna come alive in mixed media - most of it abstract - also showcases the creativity and imagination of our members. The show at Agua Caliente is another one to be proud of. The reception for the exhibit is on Sunday, February 3, 2013, 12-2pm. Come enjoy the show and the park!
The collaborative project for Habitat for Humanity is taking shape. Still no date for when it will be installed, but we continue to work away at making it a very special piece of permanent public assemblage work. It has been challenging artistically and physically, for some of us with older bodies. I have become very proficient with power tools!
I want to encourage those of you who have never experienced learning about painting under Josh Goldberg to enroll in the mini-workshop for January. You will come away inspired!
Have a wonderful holiday season and come back in January with renewed energy to create!

Opportunity Knocks
There is an opening for one or two people to become helpers for the program chairperson, Nancy Norton. This job would include helping to set up the room for whatever presentation is planned for the meeting. There is a lot to do in getting ready for a monthly meeting and extra hands and others with the knowledge of what needs to be done is essential to a smooth operation. Please let Marti or Nancy know if you would be willing to help in this way. |
