 Wisdom Words

The Power of Community

Six powerful reasons not to go it alone:

1.  Collective wisdom. No one person ever has all of the answers, and regardless of the amount of Google-fu you may have, consulting with experts is always going to give you better information.

2.  Pushing our limits. When working alone, it's oftentimes too easy to give up when things get hard. By surrounding yourself with others working toward a similar goal or objective, you'll get motivation, support, and friendly competition to push yourself just a bit further than you would have done on your own.

3. Support and belief. Some days those big goals just seem impossible. On those days when you most want to give up, you need to lean on your community the most. They believe in you - probably more than you believe in yourself.

4. New ideas. I truly believe that when you are working within a community of like-minded people that the wisdom of crowds is considerably greater than any one person working alone. Our divergent world views and lenses mean that we all approach the exact same problem slightly differently.

5. Borrowed motivation. Even on those days when your belief in yourself isn't waning, doing what needs to get done can seem overwhelming. Look around your community and be inspired!

6. Accountability. If you're an uber-responsible person, you may not want to admit to people you care about who are pulling for you that something didn't get done. There's nothing like having to be accountable to others to up your game.

Allowing others to help is hard, but it ultimately raises everyone's game, and suddenly that summit isn't nearly so far off.

"Chaos often breeds life when order breeds habit."
            __Henry Adams

"Life is chaos. Our job isn't to create perfect order. It's to explore, create, expand, and evolve within the inevitable disorder."
    __Lori Deschene from
                    Tiny Buddha

"Our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world as being able to remake ourselves."
                __Gandhi

Traveling Light Every Day, Not Just When on Vacation!

1. Notice. Slow down. Reflect
2. Live with less stuff.
3. Talk to strangers.
4. Reserve judgment.

"The artist is a servant who is willing to be a birthgiver. I believe that each work of art, whether it is a work of great genius or something very small, comes to the artist and says, 'Here I am. Enflesh me. Give birth to me.' And the artist either says, 'My soul doth magnify the lord,' and willingly becomes the bearer of the work, or refuses."
        __Madeleine L'Engle

The Art of Assemblage

John Salgado, a native Arizonan, creates mixed media assemblage using unrelated found objects which are placed within constructed or found wood boxes, often having glass fronts. His form of assemblage art creates a relationship between the objects to interpret stories, dreams and myths often referring to personal memories and life experiences. He encourages an observer of his art to find a personal message in his work or use it as an opportunity to re-see or re-think an idea.

Growing up in the mining communities of San Manuel, Mammoth and Oracle, he realized that the art experience and traditional opportunities were not available to all segments of the population. As an affiliate of Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery and Workshop (roots workshop), a Latino based contemporary non-profit collective, he has worked at providing space, instruction, and opportunity for many types of art forms. John's grandmother provided inspiration through her form of assemblage and he has carried this tradition forward. Tucson is lucky to have John as a working artist and community contributor. Visit Raices Taller 222 at RaicesTaller222@aol.com. Sign up for mailings and calls to artists. All artists are encouraged to submit.

This year extensive plans were made to meet the needs of the CASA membership which were expressed in the May survey. Our first workshop is called "Assemblage Inside the Box," which will prepare those members who are going to participate in the Three Dimensional Show at Mesch Clark and Rothschild Law Firm in January (with jurying November 2).

John Salgado will present a one day workshop on Friday September 14 at Raices Taller, 6th St. and 6th Ave., Tucson, from 10am to 4pm. Each attendee is asked to bring their own box (an old drawer will do). Do begin thinking of themes and doing "junk" shopping! When you send in the fee, you will receive a materials list to verify receipt of the fee.

The Circle of Book Clubs and The Humane Society will be hosting a book and art event on December 2, 2012 to benefit both the Pima Library Foundation and the Humane Society.  Dr. Kristin Nelson, a Scottsdale veterinarian will be presenting her book - Coated With Fur.  We will also have a silent auction of animal inspired art. (art may be two or three dimensional, in any medium or combination of mediums, and animal inspired is extended to birds and fish - so any work with feathers, fins and gills will be welcomed.  We hope that members of CASA will generously support this event by donating originals or prints of original artwork for the auction.  The Circle's book events are typically held at beautiful private homes and wine and light refreshments are served.

Artists who donate to the auction will be given a complimentary ticket.

I've asked Marti White to inform CASA members of our event.  Please direct your questions to Rona Rosenberg at the Kirk-Bear Canyon Library,

Wondering What a Floater Frame Is?

Bob Burridge spoke about floater frames as a good way to present your mixed media artwork. Some attendees at the workshop didn't know what these were. While your local professional framer may be your best source of exactly what you want, there are some sources for custom floater frames out there if you want to find a less expensive "do it yourself" solution. Graphik Dimensions, Ltd. has a large selection of both wooden and metal floaters. They can be found on line at www.pictureframes.com (phone: 800-221-0262). Look for canvas floaters. They are available in sizes that accomodate both standard 3/4" canvases and also gallery wrap deeper canvases. American Frame also has a selection of floaters. Check these out at www.americanframe.com (800-537-0944). I like another frame they have called "Canvas" which is available in several metal colors. It has a very small lip, but is deep enough to accommodate up to 1". This gives a standard 3/4" canvas a more professional, finished look. All these frames can be custom made - they are not standard size only frames.

Kyle Johnston assemblage

A Visit to the Studio of Kyle Johnston

In July several members of CASA visited the studio and home of Kyle Johnston, a noted Tucson Assemblage artist. The group was very impressed with Kyle's work and  learned a lot about how to successfully build an assemblage. Above is a picture of one of Kyle's assemblage pieces. Kyle also supplied the group with an essay about how to attach materials to a piece of assemblage artwork. A pdf file of that information is available below.

Fall Three-Day Workshop

with

David Adix

October 24-26, 2012

David Adix, a Tucson artist, taught a mini-workshop for CASA about a year and a half ago. The reviews were so enthusiastic we invited him back to present a three-day workshop for us, "Exploring Collage," on Wednesday, October 24, Thursday, October 25 and Friday, October 26, 2012. The workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, Goddard Hall, 4831 East 22nd Street, Tucson. The class is suitable for beginners to advanced collage artists. Applications for the workshop will be accepted by mail based on the earliest postmarks. Please refer to the registration form which is attached below.

David is a classic collage artist in the manner of early 20th century artists such as Kurt Schwitters, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris. He uses found papers-often the most humble bits of paper such as hot - cup wraps, old maps and other papers, the older and the more worn out, the better - and turns them into distinctive and dynamic works of art. His style of collage is also known as "pure" collage in that he uses found or purchased papers and usually does not paint his own papers or paint over his collages. His signature work is long, narrow human figures made of found materials in assemblage.

David is represented by galleries in Tucson, Scottsdale, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Some of his out-of-state galleries are in California, Michigan, Vermont and Florida.

Letter from the President

Welcome back to all of you! The summer has flown by and here we are again at the beginning of a new CASA year. Nancy Norton, Program Chair, and Carmen Williams, Mini-Workshop Chair, have been very busy putting together an exciting year of programs and opportunities for you to work with some really interesting instructors in workshops. You will notice some changes in the structure of the mini-workshops. They may not be after a regular meeting, but instead on another day at a different location and perhaps for a whole day or longer rather than a half day. We hope you will be better served, educationally, by this kind of approach.

Since our first juried show comes up the very first of 2013 at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild Law Firm and is an assemblage or three-dimensional wall work show, we have scheduled an assemblage artist for a demonstration and a workshop in September. This show will be juried at the November meeting, so it is coming up quickly. We hope that you have been working on your own over the summer, but if you need some nudging into the art of assemblage, don't miss the September meeting and workshop.

Carol Chambers, Exhibits Chair, has also scheduled a show for Signature members in the fall at the Campus Christian Center near the entrance to the U of A and a show at Agua Caliente to be hung in late January. We are working with Habitat for Humanity on a benefit show to be held (probably) in April with a theme that relates to the purpose of Habitat. More information coming on that. We are also in the planning stages on a collaborative permanent installation for the entry to Habitat's new offices where the benefit show will be held. These are exciting opportunities for us!

Two three-day workshops are also on the calendar - David Adix in the fall and Victoria Pittman in the spring. David has done a workshop for us in the past and he proved to be a tireless and inspiring instructor. Victoria comes to us from the Phoenix area. She is a generous and exciting mixed media artist with lots of experience teaching workshops.

I look forward to seeing many of you in September!

CASA at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild Law Firm

Coming in January

CASA will be doing a three-dimensional show at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild to be hung in January. The jury date is November 2, at our regular CASA meeting at St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Church. You will be able to submit two pieces - assemblage or other three-dimensional work. All work must hang on the wall. This show will hang for several months. Mesch, Clark and Rothschild is located at 259 N. Meyer Ave. in downtown Tucson. The space can accomodate some large pieces of work, so think big rather than small. We are hoping many of you will try something new if you have never worked in three-dimensions before. This should be a fun show!
