Wisdom Words
Have respect for yourself, and patience and compasssion. With these, you can handle anything." __Jack Kornfield
"There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept responsibility for changing them." __Denis Waitley
"When you believe something can be done, really believe, your mind will find ways to do it." __Dr. David Schwartz
"Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good." __Voltaire Four Lessons About Perfection 1. Acknowledge the good in yourself. Yes you need to improve, but see what is right with the picture, too. Perfection does not mean only seeing what is wrong. 2. Accept help from others. Don't be ashamed to accept help if it is going to make your life easier. Our best work can rarely be achieved single-handedly. 3. Be aware of your larger purpose. Make an effort to not get lost in insignificant details and lose sight of your goal. Perfection does not equal nit-picking. 4. Aim for awesome, not flawless. This can be tricky, since we could stop ourselves short fearing that we might be pushing ourselves too hard. Perfection tastes best when peppered with balance. from Tiny Buddha by Sonal Pandey Five Tips on How to Succeed Despite the Odds 1. Die to the past. 2. Surrender to the unknown. 3. Dare to dream. 4. Support yourself. 5. Go all in. Maria Mooney in Tiny Buddha |

A Great Book of Interest to Artists I just finished reading a great book that I found fascinating: Imagine: How Creativity Works by Jonah Lehrer. The author uses ample examples of creative people and has come up with some interesting princples of what contirubutes to a climate for the development of creativity. He also explores how the brain works to foster creativity. I listened to this book read by the author, but it would be just as interesting read from the page. It is current with a 2012 copyright date. Marti White

Pen and Ink for Collage and Mixed Media
Mary Ellen Palmeri
Mary Ellen will give us some background on her development as an artist and how she got interested in working with pen and ink. She will demonstrate some of the ink techniques that can be used in mixed media work and will provide samples of these techniques to be passed around. She will also pass around some examples of art combining the use of collage and ink. Finally she will open up a question and answer opportunity.

Included will be a series of "warm-up" exercises that are especially useful for finding out the capabilities of any new pen tools. These exercises will cover basic and advanced techniques that can be used by themselves or in combinations. Handouts will be provided that give tips, descriptions of various pens available, steps for developing several abstract designs, resources and more. Handouts will also summarize techniques covered in the workshop, as well as suggestions for further exploration.
Materials List:
- General collage supplies: Acrylic gloss and matte medium; brushes for applying medium; surfaces (watercolor paper, mat board); assortment of collage papers.
- Basic working tools and supplies: Palette material (plastic tray, paper plates, etc.), water container, pencil, eraser, ruler, scissors, paper towels or rags.

New Way to Accept Credit Card Payments
Artists who wish to accept credit card payments for their work now have two options if they have a smart phone. Intuit Go Payment and SquareUp offer credit card readers that attach to these phones and allow credit card payments on the spot. There is a set-up process for each service which is easy to do and it is free. Once the account is set up and the card reader delivered the service can be used immediately. The service also lets you know instantly if the credit card you are reading is OK. Your portion of the sale is directly deposited into your account. Each service, GoPayment and Square, provides free credit card readers and charge 2.75% on all major credit cards including American Express.

Wondering What a Floater Frame Is?
Bob Burridge spoke about floater frames as a good way to present your mixed media artwork. Some attendees at the workshop didn't know what these were. While your local professional framer may be your best source of exactly what you want, there are some sources for custom floater frames out there if you want to find a less expensive "do it yourself" solution. Graphik Dimensions, Ltd. has a large selection of both wooden and metal floaters. They can be found on line at www.pictureframes.com (phone: 800-221-0262). Look for canvas floaters. They are available in sizes that accomodate both standard 3/4" canvases and also gallery wrap deeper canvases. American Frame also has a selection of floaters. Check these out at www.americanframe.com (800-537-0944). I like another frame they have called "Canvas" which is available in several metal colors. It has a very small lip, but is deep enough to accommodate up to 1". This gives a standard 3/4" canvas a more professional, finished look. All these frames can be custom made - they are not standard size only frames.

Six Powerful Questions That Will Change Your Life Forever
"Information is not knowledge." __Einstein
1. What do I absolutely love in life?
List anything that you love about the world and the people in your life. Think about any activities that get you excited and enthusiastic and make you feel most alive.
2. What are my greatest accomplishments in life so far?
List all of the moments that you are proud of as well as the times that you've succeeded. To have accomplished these, you would have used some of your key strengths. See if you can identify why you succeeded.
3. What would I stand for if I knew no one would judge me?
List everything that you would do if you weren't afraid, even your wildest dreams. This will help you discover your greatest values.
4. If my life had absolutely no limits and I could have it all and do whatever I wanted, what would I choose to have and what would I choose to do?
Describe your ideal lifestyle. List what you would do throughout the day if you knew that you were bound to be successful, what kind of person you would be, how much money you would earn, and where you would live?
5. What would I do if I had one billion dollars?
List everything that you would really love to do if you had all the money in the world. Okay, so you would probably travel the world, buy a house or two, and give some money to your family. Then what would you do with your time?
6. Who do I admire most in the world?
List your greatest inspirations and the qualities that you admire about these people. Think about what really inspires you in this world. What you admire about others is also a quality that is in you. Know that you admire someone because they have similar qualities
to you.
Taking the time to answer these questions will change your life. The more that you can implement your passions, strengths, values, desires, and motivations into your days, the happier your life will become.

Letter from the Presidents
Here we are at the end of the CASA year and it has been a wonderful year. We have enjoyed working with all of you and especially with the outstanding board of directors that has led CASA through this year. One of the strengths of this organization is the community building that occurs at each and every monthly event - whether it is getting to know another member better or enjoying the comraderie of a mini-workshop or the hard work and fun of a three-day workshop. All of these things feed our souls and push us to greater heights of creativity. Our exhibitions have been some of the best we have ever had - beginning with the very first collaborative CASA project, the 9/11 installation, and then the Pastiche Exhibit which was stellar, the great show at Contents, and ending with the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network exhibit that is just beginning. Some really exciting things are in the works for next year and we hope that you will be as excited about them as we are. Details will be forthcoming! Your input is always welcome as the board of directors for next year begins to flesh out the programs and opportunities that you may take advantage of in 2012-2013. Feel free to approach any member of the board with your ideas and concerns. That is why we are here - to serve you. Have a productive and relaxing summer. We look forward to seeing all that you have accomplished in the fall.
Sandy Brittain and Marti White, Co-Presidents
Announcing a CASA exhibit scheduled for January through April, 2013, at Mesch, Clark and Rothschild Law Firm in downtown Tucson. This show will be juried at the November meeting, so you may want to start thinking dimensionally over the summer. |

Summer Classes with Lois McDonald
Session 1: Tuesdays - June 5, 19, July 3, 17
Session 2: Tuesdays - July 24, August 7, 21, September 4
Learn the following:
1. What kind of acrylic paint to use and why. You will "play with them" to see how different kinds of paint work for you.
2. Layering with product or paper and what to use to apply it. You will play with that, too and see what you can come up with. That day we will lay Unryu paper down on watercolor paper (or canvas) in preparation for the ink pour at our next session. I'll do a demo on how I approach laying down the Unryu with design in mind.
3. Acrylic ink pouring and manipulating (on the paper/canvas we did the lesson before). I'll give a quick demo on pouring.
4. Finishing the poured piece and critiquing anything that was done in the weeks prior.
Artists are asked to bring brushes and palette for painting and applying texture products. Painting surfaces and supplies will be furnished by Lois. (Canvas will be offered at my bulk discount price for those that want them)
Fee will be $160.00 for the four classes. Only eight students will be in each class so each person will have room to work.
