Design and Composition

Presenter: Francheskaa
How many times do you walk into a gallery and fall in love with a painting? What makes a great painting? Why do some paintings lead you into another time and dimension allowing your eye to flow naturally and gently through their space. What separates memorable art from mediocre art? It all begins with basic composition and design...using line, shape, texture and form to bring unity and balance to your work. Once you learn the basic principles, your true creative spirit can find greater expression through color, texture and movement.
Mini-Workshop with Francheskaa
1-5pm following our meeting
Francheskaa will show us how to create memorable art using design and composition principles. She will teach four basic compositions that you can easily master whether you are an abstract artist or a realist.

I wish to thank you all, the Board and the members of CASA, for the gift and recognition I received at Friday's meeting. It was both a pleasure and an honor to serve as your Co-President for the last two years. The excitement and energy of working with the dedicated leadership and artists of CASA is rewarding, and I appreciate the supportive and collaborative spirit of our group. I look forward to many happy and productive years of learning and growing as an artist with you.

Message from the Presidents
The time certainly does fly by! We have passed our second meeting of the year and are into the season of exhibits. Jurying for the show at Pastiche was done at the October meeting and we hope to see all of you at the reception on Sunday, October 16, 2-4pm. This newsletter is full of news regarding the activities of our members as well as opportunities for you in the way of volunteering and education. Please don't miss the news that is included in the side bar at the top of the newsletter. There is a pdf file for you to download with the membership roster for this year (it will be updated in January) as well as a pdf from Catherine Nash and Robert Renfrow with educational opportunities for you to take advantage of from these two wonderful teaching artists. JoAnne Hungate continues to offer mono-typing workshops at her studio and there is information in the sidebar about how to contact her. In the article about what our artists are doing, you can find a listing of where Lisa Mishler is teachng abstract painting classes. At our November meeting you will be able to pick up card stock for the Holiday cards that go into the packets and also on the food trays of children who have to spend the holidays in Tucson's hospitals. We will also be asking for you to donate $5.00 toward the purchase of the items that go into the activity packets. Your board of directors is working on many new and exciting ways to make CASA an organization that serves you, the artists, better. We are always open to listen to your comments and address your needs. We all consider it a privilege to help lead CASA toward greater and greater things. Keep creating!

HEALING IN TUCSON - The Healing Response to the Violence of January 8th, 2011

OPENING RECEPTION: Thursday, December 1st, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Friday, October 28th 2011, 5 p.m.
ELIGIBILITY: Artists residing in Pima County, Arizona.
MEDIA: Painting, drawing, photography, mixed media, hand made prints, poetry (Framed). Reproductions and crafts will not be accepted.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Content of the visual work must address a "Healing Response" to the shootings of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 other individuals,
on January 8, 2011 in Tucson, AZ.
Work submitted must have been completed after
January, 2011.
Artists must be residents of Pima County, Arizona.

Robert Burridge Workshop
I am getting lots of e-mails asking about the Robert Burridge workshop on March 21, 22 and 23, 2012. Here's the scoop:
- Registration will open on January 11, 2012, the day the February CASA newsletter arrives in your e-mail inbox. The fee will be $325.
- Click on the designated link to pull up your registration form.
- Mail your check for $325 and the registration to me. My address will be in the form you click on.
- Registrations will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and will be placed according to postmark date and time. As soon as I get your check, I will e-mail a supply list to you. We have room for the first twenty people. After that, names will be placed on a waiting list.

Volunteer Opportunity
Iskashitaa Refugee Harvesting Network is a program supported by St. Francis in the Foothills United Methodist Chruch. It began as a group who harvested food such as citrus fruit that would otherwise go to waste and redistributing it to those who had need of it. It has grown into helping these refugee women find a market for their beautiful handcrafted items, ESL classes, swimming and sewing classes. They have approached us looking for people who sew and would be willing to volunteer some time to help refugee women learn to sew using modern sewing machines. They have classes all over Tucson and can work around anyone's schedule to find a spot where you can be a part of this exciting program designed to help refugee families provide for themselves. Flux Gallery Anniversary

Flux Gallery will celebrate its second anniversary on Friday, October 14, 5-8pm. The gallery is a co-operative of Tucson contemporary artists including CASA member, Sheryl Holland. Other members are Lee Roy Beech, Peter Eisner, CJ Shane, Dragana Skrepnik, Mary Vaneecke and Lynn Yamaguchi. Flux is located in Plaza Palomino at the southeast corner of Swan and Ft. Lowell, 2960 N. Fall Three-Day Workshop with Nancy Christy-Moore
Arizona artist Nancy Christy-Moore, an internationally recognized, award winning painter, will present CASA's fall 2011 Workshop, "Letting Go: Adventures in Watermedia" on October 26, 27 and 28 at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 4831 E. 22nd Street, Tucson.
Nancy has been painting and teaching for nearly 30 years, and works in a process she has developed which she calls "inner painting." She has evolved from a watercolorist into a mixed media painter working with water-based pigments and layering with Japanese collage papers and a variety of acrylic mediums. Rather than planning her paintings, she allows the pigment, color and movement to guide the image, often being surprised with what develops during this process. She usually works in a series, two of which are featured on her website, www.nchristy.com.

Members in the News
Tubac Center of the Arts next show is "Working with Paper," juried by Tucson artist, Jim Waid. The opening reception is Friday, October 14, 5-7pm and the show runs through November 13. CASA will be well represented. We are excited to announce that the collaborative installation work of nine CASA artists, Three Thousand Souls, has been chosen for the show. Also work by JoAnne Hungate, Another Hot Day, Sandy Brittain, The Spirit of St. Philip's and Autumn Splendor, Carol Chambers, Contentment, Passion Dance and Spirit of Life, Ann Mason, Balancing Act, Finestra Bianca and Shanghai Sails, Diana Davis, Slow Moving Dreams and Marti White, Red and Green with Pomegranates..
Blue Raven Gallery presents "Highlands, Lowlands: A Green Journey" opening on September 10, 2011, with a reception from 5-8pm. Look for Summer at the Lake, an acrylic painting by Sandy Brittain and Dragonfly Summer, an art quilt by Marti White.
Del Marinello has a permanent display at the Coyote Grill on La Canada in Green Valley. She will
also have work in the SAWG gallery during the month of October.
Sandy Brittain, Diane Haug and Deanna Thibault are participating in the "Breasts for Life" project through Toscana Gallery.
Carol Ann is currently represented by Artworks in Austin, TX and Convergence Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. She has two pieces in an abstract invitational at Cape Fear Studios in Fayetteville, NC, during the months of September and October. Carol Ann will also have two pieces in the Attorney General's Office Exhibition, Tucson, which is sponsored by the Arizona Arts Alliance. These pieces will hang from October through February.
Sandy Brittain and Marti White will be exhibiting at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network for the months of October, November and December. An opening reception is planned for Thursday, November 10, 2011, from 5:30 - 7:30pm.
Elizabeth Quinn-Worrall will be participating in Tucson Pima Arts Council Open Studio Tour in November. She will also be advertised in the Arizona Collector's Guide for 2012.
Marti White and Lois McDonald are featured in a new online book by Sue St. John called, "A Walk Into Abstracts, Vol. 3."
Lisa Mishler will be teaching at The Drawing Studio this year. Abstract Painting: sessions as follows: October 10-November 28, December 5 - 19, January 2 - 16, January 30 - March 26, and April 9 - May 4. She will also be teaching ongoing Abstract Painting classes at Toscana Gallery on Wednesdays from 10am - 1pm starting September 14. Lisa's work will be showcased at a Flux Gallery show with an opening night on November 18.
Vanessa Dearing's work is included in the current show at Tohono Chul Park, "Art Journaling," which will continue through November 14.
Marti White has two collages accepted into TCA's Miniature Show, Generations 2 and 3. The exhibit dates are November 18, 2011 - January 2, 2012 with a reception on Friday, November 18, 2011, 5-7pm.
Sandy Brittain's painting, Natural Surroundings, and Carol Chambers painting, Run Silent, will be included in Tubac Center of the Arts Members' Juried Exhibit, November 18, 2011 - January 2, 2012, reception on November 18, 2011, 5-7pm.
Miriam Otte will be participating in the Fall Open Studios. Miriam is located in the Northwest part of the metro area and invites you to drop in and say "hi."
JoAnne Hungate has six watercolor monotypes on display in the Studio Gallery at TCA from October 14 to November 12. Marti White has four paintings in the Studio Gallery during the same time period. This coincides with "Working with Paper." The show opens Friday, October 14, 5-7pm.
JoAnne Hungate will be participating in the Open Studio on November 12 and 13 from 11am to 5pm at her studio in Many Hands Courtyard at 3054 N. First Avenue, #9. This is between Ft. Lowell and Glenn on the east side of the street.

Holiday Cards Instructions
The cards for the children's packets will be made before our December meeting. We ask that each CASA member donate $5.00 toward the purchase of the items that go into the activity packets. You can do this at the November or December meeting. Please give (or mail) your donations to the treasurer, Miriam Otte. Card stock will be available at the November meeting. Please bring them finished to the December meeting. Since an 81/2" x 11" card stock cut in half makes two cards, it is hoped that everyone will make two cards - one for the activity packet and one for the meal tray on Christmas Day. 1. Please leave inside of the card blank. We have a verse and CASA sticker to go inside. 2. Sign your name on the front or very back of the cards. 3. No buttons, candy, glitter (gel glitter OK) or other items that can be ingested or get into the bedding. 4. Only 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" cards will be accepted. Please align them horizontally. 5. Please - no digitals. Cards are to be secular. No religious themes. 6. Envelopes are not needed 7. Keep in mind the packets are for children ages 3 and up. Thank you for your assistance with this project. This is good exposure for CASA and for you as everyone who comes into the child's room sees the cards. For the past 17 years CASA has provided this project to children hospitalized over the holidays. This project helps us maintain our status as a non-profit. If you cannot make the December meeting, please mail your cards to Bernita Brisson, 2121 S. Pantano Rd. #180, Tucson, AZ 85710-6118, before the December meeting. A sample packet will be shown at the November and December meetings. Some materials for card fronts will be available at the November meeting. Suggested materials to use include: scissors, a tacky glue, permanent glue stick, colored pencils, crayons, markers, stickers, stamps, cut outs, collage papers, etc. Have fun with this and help put a smile on a child's face. Members Who Have Need of Our Thoughts and Prayers
Cleo Teissedre is recovering from surgery to help the circulation in her legs. She is doing very well, but still needs to regain strength and heal. Her husband, Jack, is not doing well and Cleo is pretty much tied to home caring for him. Remember her with a card or a call. She would love to hear from you.
Carol Ann's father died recently. She has been in Wisconsin with her family.
Paula Porter's 57 year-old brother died suddenly in late September. Paula is still in Michigan. If you would like to send her a note or card, the address is Paula Porter, 2523 Dustin Road, Okemos, MI 48864.
Ruth Canada is recovering from surgery.
