Applying for Signature Membership Status

Signature Membership is conferred on active members who have been accepted into three juried exhibits. We no longer issue certificates to member participants in shows. The exhibits chair keeps a record of what shows you have been in. When you feel that you have been in three juried exhibits, you need to contact the exhibits chair, currently that is Carol Chambers, carolchambers@q.com, who will double check with her records and then inform the membership chair that you now have signature status. Your name will be listed in the next newsletter and on the Signature Members' roster.

Wisdom Words

Cultivate Active Contentment

1. Make time for downtime every day.
2. Write a list of everything you are grateful for right now.
3. Make two lists of goals: immediate goals for the week ahead and bigger-picture goals to work toward.
4. Celebrate small successes every day.
5. Remember that in the end, there is nothing you have to do.

"Seek not greatness, but seek truth and you will find both."
               __Horace Mann

"Life is a process of becoming. A combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death.
                __Anais Nin

"Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things."  __Robert Brault

"We may not have it all together, but together we have it all."  __Unknown

Presenter: Nancy Reyner

Nancy Reyner

"I like to think of painting as a collaboration - a collaboration between my initial idea and the medium. By allowing the medium to change my mind during the process, painting never ceases to be inspiring."  __ Nancy Reyner

Nancy Reyner, a painter of more than thirty years, art educator and author brings her passion and expertise to inspire CASA members in a two hour lecture/demonstration using Golden Paint products. She was selected for a two year painting and drawing residency for the Phoenix Center as an exhibitor, curator, and teacher which led to her position as technical consultant for the acrylic paint company, Golden Artist Color, Inc. Her association with Golden allows her the opportunity to use the latest in acrylic paint technology creating original and unique effects in her paintings. Nancy's presentation will include how acrylic can be used as a ground for other media (i.e. watercolor or colored pencil), information on color mixing, blending and controlling drying time, and seeing how gels can customize paint or create textural effects. You, as artists on all levels, will come away from this lecture with fresh new insights for your own work.

Nancy's paintings have been exhibited internationally including the Florence Biennale, and she was a featured artist on Home and Garden's TV show "That's Clever." She currently resides in Santa Fe, New Mexico. You may visit her website: www.NancyReyner.com.

She will have available for purchase her books:

Acrylic Revolution and Acrylic Innovation,  and her DVD: Acrylic Revolution: Watercolor and Oil Effects with Acrylic.

We are so lucky to have this gifted artist and teacher with us and a big thanks to Golden Artist Colors, Inc. for providing this opportunity.

Be aware: The lecture will begin at 9:30 and will end at 11:30. The business meeting will follow this lecture.

Election of a Treasurer for 2013-2014

The board nominates Susan Ettl to fill the postion of Treasurer on the CASA Board of Directors for 2013-2014. A vote will be taken at the May business meeting on May 3 after the Nancy Reyner's lecture.

Letter from the President

This is my last newsletter. I am a little sad at leaving behind a creative job that has been both a learning experience and a way to make CASA a better informed group. When I started the electronic newsletter five years ago, it was my only job in CASA. I have enjoyed making it a publication that helps to keep us connected as friends and artists.

I have one more year to serve as president of CASA before someone else must take the gavel (or in our case, the bell) - the constitution requires that a person not spend more than three consecutive years in this post. No one is indispensable - there are many out there who can pick up where I leave off after the next year.

There are many ways to lead - many ways to do a job - and they are all good ways, just different. This is true of all the leadership positions in CASA. It is a actually a positive thing for the organization to have new people and fresh ideas and ways of doing the work of running CASA. It is what keeps the group moving forward instead of stagnating and getting bogged down in "we have always done it this way" kinds of thinking.

So as we finish up this year and look forward to the next, there are still some opportunities to find a spot in leadership that will help you, if you are new to CASA, get a feel for how this great organization works without jumping into a job all alone with no life preserver! There is a place for people with ideas that are new and exciting to plug in and bring some new ideas to the table and do it your way. You do not have to feel you must fill anyone else's shoes. They wouldn't fit you - you are a unique person with feet of your own and shoes that fit you.

Marti White, President

Your Important Input Is Needed

In the next few months, your board members will be planning the programs and events for the year 2013-2014. We would really like to have your input on what you would enjoy experiencing in the next year. Nancy Norton has put together a survey to get a feeling for your opinions. Since so many of you leave when spring comes to the northern states, we would like you to take the time now to answer these questions and e-mail or send the completed survey by snail mail to Nancy before you leave (or as soon as possible if you are not leaving). It really does help in making plans to have your input. A survey is attached to this article. You can download the pdf, answer the questions and copy paste into an e-mail for Nancy or print it off, fill it out and mail it to her. Please do take the time to do this!
