Ocoee Middle School is the State Demonstration School for Technology. That sounds good...right? But what most people don't realize is that this designation really has less to do with the number of computers or the cutting edge gadgets, and more to do with the types of instruction that is happening. As schools (in fact the world) gain access to more and more tech, being the one with the most toys starts to become irrelevant. True, we have multiple platforms on campus allowing students to become proficient in both Windows and Apple based software. True, we have a long-standing title as an Apple Distinguished School. True, we have View Path Cameras that teachers can use to record lessons for student home use, co-teach with partners across campus or self reflect on lesson delivery. But it is the product of that commitment to technology that is important. Ocoee Middle School is the only school in Orange County that requires each and every 6th grader to take a digital elective, putting all students on a track to accelerated course work and industry certification. Ocoee Middle School was on the cutting edge in implementing ICT Digital tools programs a full year before the district pushed out its CAPE Digital Tool initiative. That year, 347 Ocoee students earned Digital Tool Certificates. The next highest school was below 50. Last year, the opportunity to earn these certificates existed in all middle schools, but once again, Ocoee MS was on top earning more certificates than all other OCPS schools combined. With course offerings like Video Game Design and Digital Photography students can explore their creative side through technology. Career and Technical Education- Industry Certificates available in Microsoft Office Suite and high school credit available Digital Video Production (HS) only add to the solid foundation of tech curriculum offered at each grade level. All of these programs and many more work together to provide Ocoee Middle School students with and incredibly unique high school preparatory experience. So the next time you hear the term "State Demonstration School for Technology" fly by, you can proudly tell everyone that your child goes to that school and that it's not just about the tech...but what the students are learning!!

Cardinal R.E.D. - This Week's Faculty Highlight
|
Mrs. Tara Moore, 6th Grade Dean "I nominate Mrs. Tara Moore, 6th grade Dean. Since the beginning of the school year, she has set the tone for how she expects her students to behave in the lunch room and on campus. She is very consistent, and is not afraid to approach any student to address an issue. She has the tone in her voice that makes you snap to attention, yet soft enough to let them know she cares. I see her throughout the day on campus, and she is always talking to the students and always makes time for them. Whenever she comes in for coffee in the morning, she talks to my staff with respect and is genuine. I have been pleasantly surprised by everything that she does around campus and the community." Nominated by: Matt Thompson, Cafeteria Manager
Mrs. Moore with Mr. Thompson, the prior week's recipient of the Cardinal R.E.D. Award (Oct. 2016).

National PTA Reflections Arts Program
|
The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts in an educational way. Through the program, National PTA, Ocoee Middle School PTSA and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice- dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts - reflecting on a specific theme. There also is a special artist division option for students with disabilities to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in the program. Students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way that is personal and meaningful. Founded in 1969, the National PTA Reflections engages nearly 300,000 students and their families in arts education activities each year-encouraging students to explore the arts for fun and recognition. For more information about the program, visit PTA.org/Reflections. About PTA: PTAŽ comprises of families, students, teachers, administrators, and business and community leaders devoted to the educational success of children and the promotion of parent involvement in schools. PTA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit association that prides itself on being a powerful voice for all children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for public education.
