fresia May has arrived!

It is hard to believe that in one short month we will have made it to summer break. Although this is exciting, with a lot of fun events planned for all grade levels, it is important to remain focused for the rest of the school year. One way to encourage students to maintain the momentum is to maintain a schedule that includes designated time for homework and reading. This helps the students to stay focused on the routine and the school work. With a month left of school, there are a lot of opportunities to help students attain the best grades for the last nine weeks. As a school, we will continue to move forward and meet the needs of all our students.

Thank you for the continued partnership established throughout this school year.

Yours in Education,

Fresia E. Urdaneta
Principal

One of our 3rd grade 'inventors' -

please see story below!

(April 22, 2016)

Vital Signs

Rigor in the Classroom
Third Grade Inventors!

On Friday, April 22nd third grade students were transformed into great inventors from past and the present. This activity was the culmination of a three-week long inventors/inventions unit. We not only had fun learning about inventors and inventions, but students were able to think creatively as they themselves were able to think about a new "toy invention" they would love to create. They drew sketches and were able to explain how their new invention would work.

In this unit we learned about three great inventors in class: Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein and Thomas Jefferson (oh yes! Thomas Jefferson was not only our third President and the Father of the Constitution, but a great inventor as well).

During our Friday presentations, our "inventors" shared 3D models of their inventions, posters, glogsters, Power Points and they did a great job talking about their lives and their invention. Kudos to our third grade students!

Space limited the number of images we could include above,
but as you can gather, these 3rd grade Panthers/inventors all did a simply marvelous job!!

In The Spotlight!
spotlight Ms. Nieves, ESOL Paraprofessional

Hello, my name is Ms. Nieves. I've been part of the HCES family for 18 years. My titles have been as follows: Basic Paraprofessional where I assisted 2nd and 3rd teachers and students, Language Arts Resource Paraprofessional assisting 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with reading strategies, and Certified Computer Paraprofessional where I was part of the Special Area
Ms. Nieves
team. In this position I introduced K-5th on basic computer skills which included typing, math games and some educational web sites.

This year I've started a new position as an ESOL Paraprofessional to assist students with English. The past seven years I've also been part of the After-School Extended Day program where I have 4th graders. Finally, you can see me in the morning arrival period directing traffic and greeting students with a 'Good Morning' every day.

I truly love working with children. I'm looking forward to many years to come with my HCES family!

Celebrating Earth Day

Friday, April 22nd was Earth Day. All around the campus classes learned about ways to protect the Earth by conserving, recycling and protecting our living species. Mrs. Trenary's class, taught by Mrs. Langlois, developed creative ways that they can help the Earth. This was a great life-long lesson.

The students had a wonderful time with this exercise and came up with some great solutions!

HCES Community Support
Quacks for a Cure campaign . . .

Throughout the last few weeks, HCES students have been purchasing all sorts of rubber ducks as part of our "Quacks for a Cure" campaign. We have raised over $700.00 to support a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. As of now, five members of our HCES family and over 10 others, will be riding 100 miles, over 2 days, May 21-22 with the National MS Society.

But why is this SO important to us? Our very own assistant principal, Melissa Gordon, has been fighting this battle since 2010. We will be riding, along with Mrs. Gordon, to support both her and all of the others battling MS.

Thank you for your support! Look in the next issue for our team's photo!
