Olympia High School

We are in the home stretch of the school year. Our athletic teams are on fire! Girls water polo advanced to the state finals, girls lacrosse has advanced to the state finals, track & field advanced to state finals, boys and girls tennis advanced state finals. Testing continues to go relatively smoothly and we are getting ready to celebrate our seniors with many different ceremonies.

It is this time of year that I start to look back at the year we have had and it has been just terrific. Olympia High School is such a great place to learn, work, and grow and it is an honor to serve as your principal. Here is to a strong finish to a great year!

Sincerely,

Guy Swenson
Principal

Application of Interviewing Techniques

Our printed school newspaper is called the ORACLE. Currently the newspaper staff and the journalism classes are working on a spread centered on the Class of 2016. Each student was tasked with interviewing a senior using a series of questions about their high school career. In addition, the students made excellent use of their photography skills to photograph each senior. Photos were edited, as needed, with Adobe PhotoShop. The newspaper staff chose sixteen students and compiled a centerspread page using Adobe InDesign that featured the stories and photos taken by the aspiring journalists.

The final issue of the Oracle will be released on Friday, May 13 and will feature the centerspread for the Class of 2016. The Oracle newspaper staff was led by Lya Dominguez, Dacia Williams, and Meghan Amundson.

Publication Layout and Construction
From the first weeks of school, aspiring journalists from the Sports Reporting class and the yearbook staff began working together to create the 2016 edition of the Torch Yearbook. The yearbook is comprised of photos taken throughout the year and enlightening stories written by members of the staff. Fuad Shatara, Delaney Gomen, and Kelly D'Andrea created and designed the theme for the year. The trio of editors chose the theme "Frame" as their guide for the year. The culmination of the students' journalistic efforts is the arrival and distribution of the yearbook which will arrive soon!

Bring Your Child to Work Day 2016

Ms. Nolin reading to the children during 'Bring Your Child to Work Day'
This year Olympia hosted over a dozen future Titans as staff recently brought some of their children to work. It was a busy day and the campus was humming with activity but at dismissal, the visiting children were treated to a story time with Susan Nolin, Olympia's "Director of First Impressions."

While the children snacked on cookies and lemonade, Miss Susan charmed the group with her reading of The Old Woman Who Named Things by Kathryn Brown and If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff. It was a perfect way to end the day!
