Attention 8th Grade Chorus:
The 8th grade advanced chorus and advanced chorus have the opportunity to perform on Friday, May 2, at the annual Welsh Valley Jazz Festival!  Students will need to be at school at 6:30pm and will be done by 7:30pm.  This is a unique opportunity that I could no resist!  This is a talented 8th grade class and I really want them to perform as much as they can before they leave Welsh Valley!

They will be singing Imagine, You and I, and Say Something.  This should be a fun event and I really hope you and your child can commit to this event!

Please let me know if your child can sing on Friday evening by simply emailing Mrs. Vaughan.  This is so I can get a feel for the number of students I will have on Friday.  I know this seems last minute, but I was asked last minute due to to a group who had to cancel at the last minute. I was planning on being here to adjudicate the jazz bands.

Inattention and hyperactivity can have many causes. What do you do if you or the teacher thinks your child has attentional differences? How can you partner with the child's physician and teacher in identifying and treating ADHD and related conditions? What information will the doctor need from you and the teachers to help optimize medical management of ADHD while minimizing possible side effects of medicatons? ADHD is one of the few conditions where parents can be judged if their child has symptoms of it, and judged if they treat it.  How can we better understand and address ADHD. Read more on the flyer.

"Heathful Tips" from the LMSD Wellness Council

Exercise Boosts Children's Health and Academic Performance

We have all heard that exercise helps to reduce body fat and heart disease and improves muscle strength and mood, but it may also help in children's academic performance.  A 2013 study from the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies reports that children who engaged in 60 minutes or more of vigorous to moderate physical activity "showed greater attention, have faster cognitive processing speed, and perform better of standardized academic tests than children who were less active."  Physical activity could include gym class, recess, supplemental sports or even a brisk walk or bike ride.

Encourage your child to get more physically active at home too.  An after dinner walk, weekend bike ride or pick-up game of basketball at a playground are healthy choices that get the whole family moving.

Another fun option is to join LMSD's Wellness Council for our annual Spring into Fitness event being held on May 7th from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at the Cynwyd Elementary School Outdoor Playing Field.  Fitness Co-Chair, Robert Jones III of Riley FAST (Fitness and Sports Training) will be leading fun-filled fitness activities for the whole family.  Questions contact: WellnessCounciil@lmsd.org

Parents interested in attending the Nutrition Committee meeting May 5, 2014 contact diannemoore@comcast.net for further details.
