Come One Come All - Lets celebrate our cultural differences! - Join your WV Family and Friends for an International Dinner this FRIDAY, March 28th from 6pm to 8pm! Enjoy foods donated by YangMing, Primos, Jules Thin Crust and from our own WV families. Yum Yum! Entertainment will include a performance by WolfPac and also a Bollywood Dance.You won't want to miss it. Summer School Resgistration - deadline is Fri., 3/28
Summer School registration for advanced credit courses runs through Friday, March 28, 2014. The brochure is available online and in the student services offices of the four secondary schools. Payment may be made online or by check. However, the registration must be submitted in person along with proof of payment or checks to any of the four secondary schools during regular school business hours. If you have any questions regarding summer school, please contact Lauren S. Marcuson, the Summer School Principal, at 610-658-3955.

Spring Clean and Do a Good Deed because the POV students are sponsoring a clothing drive April 2-23:
POV students will be collecting slightly used men's business clothing, shoes, ties, belts etc. for Philadelphia CeaseFire, a non-profit affiliated with Temple's School of Medicine. Stay tuned for more details next week. So start looking in your closets now for items to donate.

Free Eye Care & Eyeglasses - Sat., 4/12, 8:30 am - 2:00 pm
The annual Give Kids Sight Day sponsored by Wills Eye Hospital will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from 8:30 am - 2:00 pm at the Jefferson Medical College Hamilton Building, 10th & Locust Streets, Philadelphia, 19107. Walk-in only, no appointment needed, 2 free SEPTA tokens given to each child. This program is for children (18 years and under) who did have or did not pass an eye screening this year. A parent or guardian must accompany each child. Health insurance accepted but not necessary to receive a free eye exam and glasses. Click here for more details.

Dragon Pride Student Commendations
We are pleased to recognize our Dragon Pride Commendation award winners. The following students were recognized by our staff for demonstrating Random Acts of Kindness or Contributing to the Welsh Valley Community. We encourage all students to do the right thing for the sake of it being the right thing to do. We want to recognize students for good deeds, sometimes with a smile or thank you, other times with a commendation. But our overall goal is for our staff with the commendation program is to acknowledge students for doing the right thing in the most genuine sense. The Character and Citizenship Committee and WVMS faculty would like to thank these students for helping make Welsh Valley a better place.

Executive function is a set of skills that the frontal lobe, your motherboard and central processing unit, coordinates related to managing time, attention, remembering details, inhibiting inappropriate speech or behavior, learning from past experiences as related to present actions, switching focus, planning and organizing. Read more on the flyer here. - PLEASE NOTE: Prior to the meeting, beginning at 6:30 pm, ShaVon Savage, the District's Administrator for Special Student Programs, will review the District's proposed Special Education Plan. This will give parents/guardians the opportunity to review the plan and also participate in a short focus group session regarding the larger Comprehensive Plan.

Parents Night Out - Sat., 4/5, 6:00-9:30 pm
LMHS staff and student volunteers will provide babysitting service for children ages 4-11, featuring a fun-filled night of board games, open gym, arts & crafts, nail painting, movies and more. Cost is $25 or one child, $40 for two. Read more and spread the word to families who might be interested. Parents must fill out an online registration form to register their child.

"Heathful Tips" from the LMSD Wellness Council
Happy National Nutrition Month!
March is a great month to encourage children to eat healthy foods! One of the ways LMSD elementary schools will be celebrating is by holding Go for the Greens March 24 - April 1 (specific dates are listed on the menu).
Students will also be treated to a fun nutrition lesson called Rainbow on my Plate highlighting the role that different colored fruits and vegetables play in the spectrum of good health. How can you encourage healthier meals? Count how many colors of fruits and vegetables you can eat in one day. How many can you eat in one week?

"Sleep and the Teenage Brain" - Mon., 3/31, 7-9 pm @ LMHS
Please join us for a special joint ISC and LMSD presentation by nationally renowned expert Dr. Judith Owens on Monday, March 31st, 7 - 9 pm at Lower Merion High School. Dr. Owens was recently featured in a New York Times article on the topic -- "To Keep Teenagers Alert, Schools Let Them Sleep In" (March 14, 2014). The ISC is excited to co-sponsor what promises to be an informative and relevant program for parents of both elementary and secondary age children. One of the topics to be discussed is flipping starting times for elementary and high schools. More information can be found in the attached flyer. Book Swap to Build a Library - Sun., 3/30, 2-4 pm
On Sunday, March 30, from 2:00-4:00pm, there will be a used book swap at Main Point Books, 1041 West Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr. For a $5 donation, you can bring in one or more gently used books and swap them for other donated books. Organized by Kayla Finn, a Welsh Valley Middle School student, all proceeds from the event will be donated to Room to Read, a globally recognized charity that promotes literacy and education equality for girls. Kayla is hoping to raise enough money to build a school library in a rural village in India. Unclaimed books will be donated to local libraries. For more information, email ellenfinn@gmail.com.

Belmont Hills Library is looking for vendors for their annual Community Festival and Flea Market - Sat., 5/3, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm (rain date Sat., 5/10)
The event will be held on the grounds around the Belmont Hills Public Library. Vendors may sell flea market items, original artwork, handmade crafts and any other items approved by the Library. Spaces are $25. The application deadline is April 24. Proceeds from the event benefit the Belmont Hills Public Library. 1st Annual A Better Chance Lower Merion 5K Run Sunday, April 18, 2014 9:00 am at the Cynwyd Heritage Trail in Bala Cynwyd Time: Check-in starts at 8:00 AM, race begins at 9:00 AM Location: Cynwyd Heritage Trail, Barmouth Trailhead at Levering Mill Rd. Parking: Barmouth Trailhead, Bala Cynwyd Playground and Cynwyd Station Prices: $20.00/adult, $12.00/student, $55.00/family all registration costs include a free t-shirt This event will raise money to provide educational opportunity to academically gifted, economically challenged minority male students attending Lower Merion High School. Our goal for the program is designed to increase the educational achievement amongst outstanding young men through our in-house tutoring and mentoring program. The students, young men who are successfully attending high school, attend four years of school while receiving support from host families, committed academic advisors and in-house tutors.  Lower Merion (EFLM) 6th Annual "Run for Our Schools" The sixth annual Education Foundation of Lower Merion "Run for Our Schools" will take place on Sunday, June 8, at 9:00 a.m. This community-wide event starts and ends at the Harriton High School stadium and includes a 5K run, a 1.5-mile walk, a "Track Trot" for the youngest children, and a Fitness Fair. Prizes will be awarded for top individuals overall and by age group in the 5K, and a participation trophy will be awarded to the LMSD school with the greatest number of overall participants (including volunteers). The first 150 registrants receive a Run t-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Education Foundation's grants program in our public schools. C-MITES Weekend Workshops - Sat., 5/10
C-MITES is once again offering Weekend Workshops at Lower Merion High School this spring. Classes include Adventures in Physics, Bubbleology, American Math Idol, Game Design for Minecraft, Incredible Anatomy, Pathology 101, Playing with Probability, Tangram Math, WeDo Robotics, and Wonderful Writing Workshop,
These challenging, hands-on classes are designed for academically-talented students in grades K-9. Classes meet from 9am-noon or 1-4pm on Saturday, May 10th. Parent sessions will also be offered - One Size Does Not Fit All and Gender Issues in Educating Gifted Students. For more information or to register online, click here. C-MITES (Carnegie Mellon Institute for Talented Elementary Students), based at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, has offered challenging and fun classes for gifted students for more than 20 years.

The new Wolf High program for rising 9th-12th graders offers 4 weeks of focused actor training led by one of Wolf PAC's expert teaching artists. Performers will spend their afternoons in workshops and rehearsals in Harriton High School's Black Box Theatre.
