LMSD Policy No. 816 Web Content Development and Hosting

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Lower Merion School District is continuously moving forward with the introduction and implementation of new technology. With all new technology, however, consideration must be given to its use to ensure that student privacy and safety are at the forefront.

Lower Merion School Dietrict has recently adopted a new policy titled Web Content Development and Hosting. This policy requires District employees to notify parents and guardians if their student is being directed to a website that possesses one or more ofthe following characteristics:
  1. The student is required by the teacher to register to use the website;
  2. The website permits two-way communication between students or between students and employees;
  3. The website will be used to post student work that will be assessed.
It is important to note that not every website your student may be asked to use requires notification to parents and guardians. A good example of a website that does not require notification is a website that simply provides academic resources to your student.

The implementation of this policy has started recently and will take several months to be fully employed due to the necessary training of District employees. Therefore, you may receive a larger than normal amount of correspondence from teachers via memorandum or email sharing with you the teachers' use of websites with your student. This correspondence serves two purposes: one, the exciting methods that technology is being integrated into your student's curriculum and instruction; and two, the implementation of Policy 816, Web Content Development and Hosting.

If you have any questions regarding this new policy, please Contact George Frazier at 610-645-1925 or frazier@lmsd.org.

Sincerely,

George Frazier
Director of Information Systems

Adam Spector '99 Walk set for April 13

The 5th Annual Adam Spector Walk to Win is set for 10 AM on Saturday, April 13th at Harriton High School. Register for the event, which benefits Hodgkin's research, at The Adam R. Spector Foundation website, www.adamspector.org.  Adam was the valedictorian of the Class of 1999 at Harriton High School. He passed away from Hodgkin's lymphoma in April 2007 at the age of 25. Adam's last request to his parents was to fund money for Hodgkin's research. His vision was fulfilled through the establishment of the The Adam R. Spector Foundation. Foundation grants have supported the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Texas Children's Hospital at Baylor College of Medicine. The Foundation strives to improve the outcome of the patients who relapse from Hodgkin's and those who have refractory Hodgkin's.  Please take a moment to look at the new website to learn about Adam, who battled Hodgkin's with much courage and strength. He was and continues to be an inspiration to the entire LMSD community.
