Naviance is introduced to the 6th grade!
|
During the month of January, 6th grade students will be introduced to Naviance. Naviance is a web-based tool that all secondary LMSD school counselors are using to help students with college planning and career exploration. The information generated from WVMS students completing activities using Naviance will travel with them to high school via an "electronic portfolio". For more information, including how to access your account, please take a moment to review the description of Naviance Family Connection under our Curriculum tab on the school Counselor Eboard under "Oden". In collaboration with Naviance, Mrs. Cooke will be visiting Writing classes to do a lesson on the three different types of learning styles (Auditory, Visual, and Tactile/Kinesthetic). Additionally, student will learn many specific preferences regarding environmental factors that can affect the way they learn. As part of the lesson, each 6th grade student will take a Learning Styles Inventory to gain insights about how they can most effectively learn and study. Each student will be given a worksheet that helps them work through a study plan for themselves based on the information they gained through the inventory. Please take a moment with your child to review the Learning Styles Report on Naviance Family Connections and work on the brainstorming activity together. This complete experience (the lesson and the follow-up activities) will provide your child with valuable insights that he or she can use to improve the effectiveness of their learning and studying techniques. **You should receive your Naviance log in information to the email accounts(s) you registered with the school shortly. Please check your junk mail if you do not receive this email by Friday, January 4th.**As always, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Cooke should you have any questions.

|
MLK Afternoon of Service
When: Friday, January 18, 2013 -- 1:30-3:30 pm
(All LMSD Schools have early dismissal this day)
Where: Harriton High School Cafeteria
600 N. Ithan Avenue, Rosemont, PA
On January 18, all 10 LMSD schools will come together to volunteer and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, who never stopped asking the question, "What are you doing for others?" The MLK Afternoon of Service is a time to work together to fulfill King's vision for a better America - it's an afternoon "on" instead of an afternoon "off".
There are countless ways to get involved in this MLK Afternoon of Service. Find the one that's right for you:
- Students of all ages and their parents/guardians are invited to Harriton to join together to help others.
- Help restock local Food Banks by donating non-perishable food.
- Help a school in Philadelphia by donating used books for a library.
- There will also be an opportunity to help our 4 legged friends. Please bring a can or bag of cat or dog food with you to donate.
- Make heart-shaped pillows for recovering cardiac surgery patients that will be sent to a local hospital.
- Make a "worry" doll to donate to kids in foster care, military families or be able to take one home.
- Stop by the LMHS buildOn Haiti Trek educational table to get a first-hand look at what the school in Haiti will look like and make a donation to buy a brick to help build the school.
- Cradles to Crayons will have a truck at Harriton that day to take all donations. The CSE, and high school and middle school students will help to sort all donations. Now that the new year has begun it's time to go through your closets to see what you can donate to help others. Please read the list over as to what Cradles to Crayons will and will not accept. Click here for Cradles to Crayons donation list.
- There will be entertainment by the Harriton and Welsh Valley Choirs and words of inspiration by students.
- There will be a ZUMBA workshop.
-
You will be given the opportunity to reflect upon some of Dr. King's most powerful quotes and words of wisdom.
... and many more activities!
Activities are geared for students of all ages and their parents/guardians.
Thank you all for your help to make this year's event a success.

Why Take a High School Technology & Engineering Course?
|
As the 21st century evolves, so too must LMSD students to meet new and future challenges. One way to better prepare students for their future is to increase the emphasis placed on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The Technology & Engineering departments at HH and LM is focused on meeting that need!
Many community members are aware of the Technology Student Association (TSA), a very popular after school club. What many community members may not be aware of is that students can experience the same hands-on, project based, problem solving & design experiences in Technology & Engineering courses are taught in both high schools. Both schools over four courses: Foundations of Engineering & Design, Computer Aided Drafting & Design, Architecture, and Innovation & Inventions/Robotics.
"Technology & Engineering courses are the courses with the strongest emphasis on STEM literacy," says Travis Lehman, Harriton Technology & Engineering Instructor. "In the T&E Department we pride ourselves in delivering educational experiences that you can't get anywhere else in school. Most areas of school are departmentalized; there's math, physics, computer science, drawing, etc. Technology & Engineering courses work a little differently. Our projects require students to apply and integrate many of these disciplines into challenging design solutions. We're not about graduating certified Engineers, but we are about teaching students how to effectively implement a design and problem solving process and giving them the opportunities solve challenging and hands-on engineering related problems . We teach students how properly identify problems, research possible solutions, determine the best possible solution given constraints, test their solutions, and how to understand the impacts of their designs. This process can be applied to almost any problem or challenge.
Part of our mission of the Technology & Engineering Department is to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians. Today, the importance of an education rich in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is at an all time high. Educational institutions must deliberately connect and emphasize these interrelated disciplines for students to be prepared for both college and careers. In the T & E department, we're making that happen and students are seeing the value of these elective courses: "The Foundations course was awesome! I loved the hands-on problem aspects of the course. I hope to take the advanced Robotics course next year." - LMHS Freshman, Adam Granieri. "The future robotics engineers are in this class.... TAKE IT!" - HHS Freshman Ricky Maio regarding the Innovation & Inventions/Robotics class.
During the first decade of the 21st century, government agencies, industry leaders, and education associations have raised awareness of the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math through round tables, grant funding, and seminal works such as Rising Above the Gathering Storm (Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy, 2007). STEM literacy, global awareness, adaptability, and collaboration are just a few of the identified skills necessary for success in higher education, employment, and life (NCREL/ Metiri Group, 2003). Review of recent research within technology education and the standards of Technological Literacy (ITEEA 2000, 2002) illustrate how technology education is positioned to address 21st century skills while simultaneously teaching engineering design to promote technological literacy.
From Mark Piotrowski, Technology & Engineering teacher at Lower Merion HS, "We are the T and E of STEM, and students who are considering a college degree related to technology, design, engineering should check us out. Many of the alumni who have taken some or all of courses not only credit our courses for positively impacting their college major, but they also help us stay abreast of what college students need in a high school engineering related course. Their feedback helps us as teachers better prepare students."
If you would like to know more about the courses offered within the Technology & Engineering Education departments at either school, feel free to contact Travis Lehman at HH (lehmant@lmsd.org) or Mark Piotrowski at LM (piotrom@lmsd.org)
