FORUM This Week
|
Theme: Acceptance/ Tolerance
Students will be working with each other to understand the differences and similarities they have with each other, the activities will challenge students to think beyond what they share with their closest friends. Students must dig deep to see if it is the similarities that lead them to friendship, do they have people in their lives who don't share the same qualities, and can they find room for those who might appear to have differences?

Naviance is introduced to the 6th grade!
|
During the month of January, 6th grade students will be introduced to Naviance. Naviance is a web-based tool that all secondary LMSD school counselors are using to help students with college planning and career exploration. The information generated from WVMS students completing activities using Naviance will travel with them to high school via an "electronic portfolio". For more information, including how to access your account, please take a moment to review the description of Naviance Family Connection under our Curriculum tab on the school Counselor Eboard under "Oden". In collaboration with Naviance, Mrs. Cooke will be visiting Writing classes to do a lesson on the three different types of learning styles (Auditory, Visual, and Tactile/Kinesthetic). Additionally, student will learn many specific preferences regarding environmental factors that can affect the way they learn. As part of the lesson, each 6th grade student will take a Learning Styles Inventory to gain insights about how they can most effectively learn and study. Each student will be given a worksheet that helps them work through a study plan for themselves based on the information they gained through the inventory. Please take a moment with your child to review the Learning Styles Report on Naviance Family Connections and work on the brainstorming activity together. This complete experience (the lesson and the follow-up activities) will provide your child with valuable insights that he or she can use to improve the effectiveness of their learning and studying techniques. **You should receive your Naviance log in information to the email accounts(s) you registered with the school shortly. Please check your junk mail if you do not receive this email by Friday, January 4th.**As always, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Cooke should you have any questions.

Attention 7th Grade Parents - Dental Exam Due
|
The Pa. School Health Law requires dental examinations upon entrance to school (kindergarten or grade one), third and seventh grades. It is strongly recommended that your family dentist perform the exam as he/she is the most familiar with your child's dental needs and will be able to provide follow up treatments, cleanings etc. Examination forms completed by the family dentist should be returned to the WVMS Nursing Office and can be downloaded by clicking here. Please contact the nursing office at 610-658-3930 or email Kathy Bromley bromlek@lmsd.org with any questions.

Attention 6th Grade Parents - Physical Exam Due
|
Pa. School Health Law requires medical examinations for children on entrance to school and in grades 6 and 11. These grades were selected because they represent critical periods of growth and development in a child's life. It is important that the school have a record of the child's health status. This knowledge enables the school staff to help children achieve the maximum benefit of their educational opportunities. We accept most camp, sports, and physician office physical exam forms or you can click here to download the LMSD Physical Examination form. Please contact the nursing office at 610-658-3930 or email Kathy Bromley bromlek@lmsd.org with any questions.

MLK Afternoon of Service
Friday, January 18, 2013 -- 1:30-3:30 pm
|
MLK Afternoon of Service
When: Friday, January 18, 2013 -- 1:30-3:30 pm
(All LMSD Schools have early dismissal this day)
Where: Harriton High School Cafeteria
600 N. Ithan Avenue, Rosemont, PA
On January 18, all 10 LMSD schools will come together to volunteer and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, who never stopped asking the question, "What are you doing for others?" The MLK Afternoon of Service is a time to work together to fulfill King's vision for a better America - it's an afternoon "on" instead of an afternoon "off".
There are countless ways to get involved in this MLK Afternoon of Service. Find the one that's right for you:
- Students of all ages and their parents/guardians are invited to Harriton to join together to help others.
- Help restock local Food Banks by donating non-perishable food.
- Help a school in Philadelphia by donating used books for a library.
- There will also be an opportunity to help our 4 legged friends. Please bring a can or bag of cat or dog food with you to donate.
- Make heart-shaped pillows for recovering cardiac surgery patients that will be sent to a local hospital.
- Make a "worry" doll to donate to kids in foster care, military families or be able to take one home.
- Stop by the LMHS buildOn Haiti Trek educational table to get a first-hand look at what the school in Haiti will look like and make a donation to buy a brick to help build the school.
- Cradles to Crayons will have a truck at Harriton that day to take all donations. The CSE, and high school and middle school students will help to sort all donations. Now that the new year has begun it's time to go through your closets to see what you can donate to help others. Please read the list over as to what Cradles to Crayons will and will not accept. Click here for Cradles to Crayons donation list.
- There will be entertainment by the Harriton and Welsh Valley Choirs and words of inspiration by students.
- There will be a ZUMBA workshop.
-
You will be given the opportunity to reflect upon some of Dr. King's most powerful quotes and words of wisdom.
... and many more activities!
Activities are geared for students of all ages and their parents/guardians.
Thank you all for your help to make this year's event a success.
