Niko News is a filter of the most important news items and bits of information concerning the games markets of China and Southeast Asia uncovered by Niko each week. Our multilingual analysts review dozens of news sources from several countries, and as a team Niko reduces the long list of articles to 3-4 "must read" items for you. We then provide our Niko analysis to these items, making them relevant and highlighting the importance for the market. This service is one of the many ways we help distill the confusing, conflicting information about the games markets of Asia for our clients and readers.

According to a report in Marbridge Daily, China Telecom plans to launch a "light gaming interactive entertainment platform" within its gaming portal named e-Game. It will include direct billing and third-party platform billing for developers. It will support developer partners with many resources. The E-Game portal currently has more than 120 million users with 30 million monthly active users. "Light games" is somewhat akin to "casual games," it seems.

The Ministry of Culture reported that Chinese games companies exported 66 domestically developed online games to the tune of $587 million in revenue in 2012. The export leader was 7 Road, owned by ChangYou, pulling in 100 million RMB ($16 million) in 2012 and reportedly 210 million RMB ($33 million) in Q1 2013 alone. The number of exported games and the total revenue earned overseas has risen annually.

Online video is a hot segment in China, with many competitors in a fragmented market. Niko tracks online video usage in I-cafés in our Monthly Chinese I-Café Games/SNS/Online Video Data service. Baidu is a market leader, and the company has a video platform called iQiyi. Baidu recently announced the acquisition of PPStream to merge into iQiyi. This will make Baidue China's largest online video platform based on number of mobile users and video viewing time. Niko is currently working on additional analysis of the online video segment.
