Low Back Pain:
An A to Z Visual Guide
 What is Low Back Pain?
Low back pain is a universal human experience - almost everyone has it at some point. The lower back, which strts below the ribcage, is called the lumbar region. Pain here can be intense and is one of the top causes of missed work. Fortunately, low back pain often gets better on its own. When it doesn't there are effective treatments.
Symptoms of Low Back Pain
Symptoms range from a dull ache to a stabbing or shooting sensation. The pain may make it hard to move or stand up straight. Acute back pain comes on suddenly, often after an injury from sports or heavy lifting. Pain that lasts more than three months is considered chronic. If your pain is not better within 72 hours, you should consult a doctor.

Student of the Month: Felicia
I had been away from Bikram for several years. When I practiced before, I fell in love with the practice and I also dreaded it. I put stress on myself and my family so that I could make the evening classes. Getting through the practice was drudgery, and I found myself dreading the next day class while I was still in the middle of my current class. At home, after practicing, I felt too exhausted to do anything but lay on the couch (I now know that I wasn't replenishing my electrolytes which makes a huge difference). Then came a day when my husband was travelling for work and I had no one to stay with my daughter. So, I missed a practice. I stayed home. It was such a relief! I had so much free time. Eventually, my practice tapered off until I reached the point where I couldn't believe that I let yoga take up so much of my time, my money and my sanity. I focused more on my meditation practice and received certifications in Reiki I & II. Eventually, that tapered off as well. I tried other things to stay fit. I went back to running--something I love but had suffered a series of knee injuries from. I took up biking and spin classes and more or less stayed on track fitness-wise. Still, I was looking longingly to return to Yoga and meditation and Reiki. But I could not seem to find a way back. This is a great bio. Click here to read it all!

New Teacher: Stephanie
Stephanie is a Houston native, and is thrilled to be starting her Bikram yoga career at Pearland Bikram Yoga!! She has been practicing for 10 years, and is devoted to the practice. Stephanie began her practice in New York City, during college and is wholeheartedly convinced that she would not have survived law school without it. She recently left her job as an attorney (Corporate/HR Compliance) to pursuit her passion...practicing and teaching Bikram Yoga. "I have seen this practice transform me and others around me. I know that today I am calm, confident, positive and happy because I practice regularly. In my opinion it is one of the keys to a happy and successful life. It's way more than just exercise. It's a mental discipline and once you learn it, it translates easily outside of the hot room. Coming to Bikram Yoga on a regular basis has given me control of my life." Stephanie is privileged and honored to call PBY her home studio and looks forward to seeing all of your smiling, happy faces on the line sometime soon!

100 Class-Strong Clarissa
I never thought I could do even 30 days, much less 100! It has been a wonderful experience and it has taught me quite a few things, one of them is that I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. It is not easy to accommodate a Bikram Yoga class every day of your life, with work and all, but accommodate I did, and that was a lesson in itself. In addition to personal lessons learned from the experience, the workouts make you feel so good (mostly afterwards, not necessarily during) and I am sleeping so well that I am afraid to stop going to the hot room everyday so I will continue coming often! It helped a lot to have such a nice group of teachers and fellow students supporting and cheering me on! Thank you for being there and thank you for the 5:30 a.m. classes! I had to travel for two consecutive weekends which is the only reason I stopped the challenge at 100 classes, otherwise no telling when I would have stopped.
