Student of the Month - Irysh
|
I came to the US from the Philippines 21 years ago to work as a registered nurse. I never had any regular exercise regimen, and never heard about Bikram yoga at all. It was all work for me and taking care of others both here and back home. Then came husband, kids, plus the stressors at work. They feel like layers gradually piling on top of me until I started having back pains. My chiropractor said that I carry my stress on my shoulders and neck like most people and that I should start doing flexibility exercises.
I had exercised sporadically before, had joined several gyms but never stuck to anything. When my brother had a stroke at 46 and my father died of a stroke at 67, I decided to commit myself to doing something about my health at 41.
A co-worker of mine mentioned that she had known Taz from another studio. When Taz opened a Bikram Yoga studio in Pearland, I decided to give it a try. I had ambivalent feelings after my first class. I thought at first that those people were nuts subjecting themselves to 90 minutes of slow torture in the heat. But then, I couldn't stop thinking about Bikram Yoga and just kept going back. I could say Taz was my biggest motivator after having seen her practice. I eventually told myself, someday I want to be like her too.
I've finished my 3rd year doing Bikram Yoga. My goal is to practice 3-4 times a week. If I don't make it today, I'll try to make it tomorrow or the next time possible. No pressure. I try my best though each time I come to the hot room whatever my best is for that day. As the teacher says: "It's yoga practice, not yoga perfection."
Bikram Yoga has impacted my life in so many ways...my back pain has significantly diminished, my body is more flexible and more resistant to physical stress and my cholesterol and triglycerides are reduced. Furthermore, I feel better about myself because I know I'm taking care of Me.
God willing, I hope to do Bikram Yoga for the rest of my life...hopefully I will still be able to touch my toes as an old woman. I thank my yoga family for giving me this honor. It is a privilege to practice with such wonderful teachers and students.
See you in the hot room!!!

Bikram and How it Effects Your Body
| I've been experiencing tremendous pain in my hamstrings since I've started Bikram Yoga Bikram says, "It's not what you do, but how you do." So don't let the mind wander during practice. Don't be too aggressive or impatient, either. The only time you will hurt yourself (create a sprain or pull) is if you overuse your strength or do postures mindlessly. Think of alignment. Bio-mechanically you are very safe if you do postures in alignment. Muscle imbalance creates a lot of problems. Check to make sure there is good alignment with the left and right side of the quads. Balance with the foot in alignment and the weight in alignment. Remember, the body follows the eyes. Be careful to do the postures correctly, because you are creating an imprint that is hard to undo. Breath is the only way to affect the involuntary systems. Oxygen deprivation is a major cause of spasms, other muscle pains, and sciatica. Use breath to break through fear of pain-- sigh a relaxed sigh. Deep diaphragmatic breathing is best when dealing with lots of resistance. Send the breath there--breathe through the nose. And finally, honor your boundaries, but expect them to expand. Have faith! When Menstruating?
It is perfectly safe to do Bikram's yoga when menstruating. Inverted postures are normally the postures contraindicated for menstruation. But there are no inverted postures in Bikram's yoga. So in fact, Bikram's yoga is very good for toning the reproductive system as it directly affects the reproductive organs and the endocrine glands--pituitary, pineal and thyroid gland in particular. The women's cycle becomes regular; complaints of irregularity and PMS decrease. |

A Word from Taz
As I teach sometimes things cross the screen of my mind. Lately it has been how many of our yogis who were gone have returned.
They have had some incredible life changes: new children, marriages, loss, all kinds of things. I notice, life happens and the yoga is there. Be there too.
Many Blessings,
Taz |
