County Board Asks Governor for Amendatory Veto of Special Legislation Creating Election Commission

Lake County is strongly opposed to proposed legislation that is awaiting the governor's signature that mandates the creation of an election commission in Lake County, transfers election authority from the county clerk, and results in approximately $700,000 in additional annual expense to Lake County. The Revenue, Records and Legislation (RRL) Committee discussed the matter this week. Board members were outraged that the legislation singles out Lake County and treats voters differently by eliminating a referendum option. The language was added into a much larger piece of election related legislation, including on-line voter registration. The county board chairman and chair of RRL sent a letter to Governor Pat Quinn asking him to use his amendatory veto power to strike the language that mandates the election commission in Lake County. The County Board will vote on a resolution officially opposing the measure at its meeting on Tuesday.
