Simon Kenton stunned the field Friday and won its first KHSAA state bowling championship with a shocking five-game victory over top-seeded Pleasure Ridge Park
at Louisville's Executive Strike and Spare.
It's the first state title for a Simon Kenton sports team in 26 years, according to school athletic director Jeff Marksberry. The wrestling team won state in 1987.
"We're freaking out because we're so happy," senior captain Chris Fecher said. "There are no words to describe how proud I am of my teammates."
The Pioneers, seeded 10th, upset seventh-seeded South Warren in the first round and surprised second-seeded DuPont Manual in the quarterfinals before avenging their regional final loss to third-seeded Campbell County in the semifinals.
"We beat the top three seeds in the tournament," coach Dave Hampton said. "The guys are amazing."
Simon Kenton won the region last year, beating the Camels, but was eliminated in the first round of the state tournament by Fern Creek, which upset its way into the final before losing to Scott County.
This year, Simon Kenton played Cinderella.
After rolling a disappointing score of 1,171 during Friday's qualifying round - Campbell County qualified with 1,310 and Pleasure Ridge Park at 1,355 - the Pioneers got hot behind Fecher, brother Brian Fecher, Austin Crone, Casey Mangold, Cody Hail and Jonathan Cummins, a sixth-grader at Twenhofel Middle School.
Simon Kenton rallied to beat PRP by scores of 180-250, 198-165, 212-202, 138-190, 214-191.
Cummins picked up a 2-4-7 split in the Baker games for a critical spare.
The Pioneers won their semifinal match against Campbell County in a sweep, 179-160, 215-196, 182-159.
