June 2014
Dear BECA Amigo,
We may have mentioned in previous newsletters that one of the requirements to receive a scholarship is to commit to a community social project.
In the classification stage, after the computer course, we verify the seriousness of the scholarship candidates by their daily attendance in their volunteer work as a teacher's assistant. This "Brigade" phase lasts three months.
After they earn their scholarship, the students are asked to continue participating in community service projects once a month. The results of these weekend community projects have been mixed.
We are constantly trying new ideas to motivate participation. BECA tries to stress the importance of giving back to the community.
In 2014 we changed course and made the weekend community projects 100% optional.
In our minds, a social project is not only a way to give back to the community, but it is also an opportunity to rise above and distinguish yourself as a contributing member to society.
You can imagine how proud we feel when we see our students working hard to give back. At their volition!
The social projects bring out the best in our students and in our program: Do something for someone else.
Sincerely,
|
