June brought great news to 31 of our scholars. Each received a mini-laptop to use in their studies. Everyone was ecstatic! All of this was made possible by a generous donation of
Headcount Corporation based in Canada.
Also in June, 106 students finished the first part of their scholarship qualifying process: three months in the computer lab. On June 17th, all begin the social service component: three months assisting teachers in the following Nicaraguan primary schools: Cristobal Rugama, Rafaela Herrera, Hermanos del Japón Simón Bolívar, Humberto Pavón y la Escuela Monseñor Abel Ruiz.
BECA is grateful to the schools and the Ministry of Education of Nicaragua for partnering with us. Without their help, this wouldn't be possible.
We are hoping that a good majority of the 106 students who begin this difficult stage arrive at the finish line. Each has their own goals and hopes to become part of a "different generation."
In other news, our pilot project REY13 -- which consists of qualifying students in their final year of high school -- is concluding the social service component. 10 of the 11 students who started have made it this far. In July, they will begin their three months of computer instruction.
Thanks for following us along on our journey here in Nicaragua.
