IMMUNE BOOSTING

NATUROPATHIC SPOTLIGHT
MYERS' IV VITAMIN COCKTAIL:
AN EFFECTIVE IMMUNE BOOSTER

The immune system protects the body against infection and disease. It is a complex and integrated system of cells, tissues, and organs that have specialized roles in defending against foreign substances and pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. The immune system also functions to guard against the development of cancer. Sometimes the immune system becomes compromised or weakened, leading to frequent colds and flus, chronic viral infections, auto-immunity and potentially even cancer. It's important to support the immune system by eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular exercise and getting adequate sleep. However, in addition to this, targeted supplementation of various nutrients can help to boost the immune system in order to treat or prevent disease.
A vitamin cocktail, known as a Myers' Cocktail can be used to improve immune function. The Myers' cocktail is an intravenous vitamin and mineral infusion that was developed by Dr. John Myers, M.D. in 1960s. It contains vitamin C, B vitamins, calcium and magnesium in a base of sterile water. By administering the vitamins directly into the bloodstream it bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and allows for maximal absorption and utilization of the nutrients.
The Myers' cocktail is a very effective treatment to boost the immune system. If you have a cold or flu, these IVs can help you to recover much faster or even prevent the onset if others around you are sick. It's a great treatment to consider during cold and flu season. The Myers' cocktail IV is very safe and generally well tolerated. For colds and flus it may be recommended as a single treatment or perhaps a short series to boost the immune system and prevent a recurrence of infection. A longer series (6-12 weekly IVs) can also be used in treating chronic viral infections such as EBV (Epstein Barr virus), which can become re-activated in people who have a compromised immune system, often leading to chronic fatigue. The frequency of IV treatment varies according to the individual's needs and is determined by you and your doctor.
A Review of Some of the Key Nutrients Included in the Myers' cocktail IV:
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that protects the body's cells against reactive oxygen species that are generated by immune cells to kill pathogens (bacteria and viruses). Primarily through this role, vitamin C affects several components of innate and adaptive immunity. Vitamin C has been shown to stimulate both the production and function of leukocytes (white blood cells). Neutrophils, which attack foreign bacteria and viruses, seem to be the primary cell type stimulated by vitamin C, but lymphocytes and other phagocytes are also affected. Several studies have shown that supplemental vitamin C increases serum levels of antibodies and C1q complement proteins in guinea pigs, which, like humans, cannot synthesize vitamin C and hence depend on dietary vitamin C.
Vitamin B12
Patients with a vitamin B12 deficiency have been shown to have suppressed natural killer cell activity and decreased numbers of circulating lymphocytes. Research has shown that these immunomodulatory effects were corrected by treating the vitamin B12 deficiency with supplemental B12.
Vitamin B6
Animal and human studies have demonstrated that vitamin B6 deficiency impairs aspects of adaptive immunity, including both humoral and cell-mediated immunity. Specifically, deficiency in this micronutrient has been shown to affect lymphocyte proliferation, differentiation and maturation as well as cytokine and antibody production. Correcting the vitamin B6 deficiency with supplementation restores the affected immune functions.
Vitamin B5
Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is the chief precursor to coenzyme A (CoA), a necessary enzymatic co-factor in the body. CoA plays a major role in the metabolism of fatty acids, cholesterol, amino acids, vitamins A and D, and steroid hormones. A deficiency in pantothenic acid affects the adrenal glands, the immune system, the cardiovascular system as well as the overall metabolism of lipids. While severe deficiencies are rare, many systems are compromised by insufficient pantothenic acid including the immune system.
Magnesium
Magnesium (Mg) has been the subject of extensive research because it is one of the most important micronutrients. It is involved in hundreds of metabolic processes in the body and particularly, magnesium has a strong relation with the immune system, in both nonspecific and specific immune response, also known as innate and acquired immune response. Evidence shows that magnesium plays a key role in the immune response, as a co-factor for immunoglobulin synthesis, immune cell adherence, antibody-dependent cytolysis, IgM lymphocyte binding, macrophage response to lymphokines and T helper-B cell adherence.
Calcium
Calcium signals in cells of the immune system participate in the regulation of cell differentiation, gene transcription and effector functions.
Scientists studying the cellular processes underlying the body's response to healing have revealed how a flash of calcium is the very first step in repairing damaged tissue. This flash of calcium signal goes on to activate an enzyme known as DUOX that synthesizes hydrogen peroxide, which, in turn, attracts the first white blood cells to the wound. This white blood cell invasion, which is initiated during our inflammatory responses, is needed to kill off invading microbes and stop the onset of septicemia following tissue damage. These findings indicate that the wound-induced calcium flash represents the earliest identified signal after obtaining a wound and might therefore orchestrate the rapid recruitment of immune cells. Calcium is an important messenger through which the kinetics of lymphocyte activation is regulated, and plays an essential role in T lymphocyte homeostasis, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis.
Myers' cocktail IVs are an effective treatment for boosting the immune system in both acute and chronic conditions. The necessity and frequency of the IV's is individualized and can be determined by your doctor.

NUTRITION CORNER
5 SUPERFOODS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY
Nutrients such as vitamins A, C, E, zinc, and selenium are vital to a proper functioning immune system. In fact, research shows a deficiency in specific nutrients depress the immune system. According to a 2002 report in the British Journal of Nutrition, deficiencies of vitamins B6 and B12, folic
acid, copper and iron can depress immunity. What can we do? Eat superfoods which are packed with vitamins and nutrients to boost the immune system.
Why are some foods called "superfoods"? What makes them stand out from the rest of the foods out there? The answer is more complex than one might think. There are several items that are considered when looking at the content of superfoods. Let's explore each briefly.
-
First is nutrient density. This refers to the ratio of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients per calorie that a food contains. Superfoods provide the highest amounts of nutrients possible for the least amount of calories. The system that measures nutrient density is called Aggregate Nutrient Density Index system or ANDI. This system has enabled researchers to rate foods with the highest to the lowest nutrient density values. One should try to eat foods with the highest nutrient density levels to obtain adequate vitamins and minerals from food sources
-
Second is pH balance. The pH balance is the measure of acid/alkaline balance in the body and is measured on a scale from 1-14 with the ideal value ranging between 7.35-7.45. The more acidic the internal environment of the body is the higher the risk for disease and aging. By increasing the amount of alkaline foods in your diet, you can shift your body's pH toward alkalinity helping to oxygenate your system and bringing it back into balance. As one can imagine, consuming superfoods is an excellent way to help reduce acidity and increase alkalinity in the body.
-
Third is the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value. This is a measurement of a food's antioxidant power and is quantified by seeing how combinations of antioxidants found naturally in a specific food absorb a particular free radical. The stronger the antioxidant power of a food, the higher the ORAC value.
If one searches "superfoods" on the internet, dozens of lists containing a variety of superfoods come up. In fact, such lists name everything from bee pollen to seaweed! This list will concentrate on 5 fairly common superfoods and their attributes.
One. Turmeric-This is a spice that gives curry its distinctive flavor as well as gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color. Turmeric has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor. It comes from the root of the Curcuma longa plant and has been widely used in both Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of medicines due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-septic properties. Curcumin, which is the principal curcuminoid found in turmeric, is considered its most active constituent.
This compound may help to lower LDL cholesterol and improve circulation by preventing clot formation. According to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, a pilot study comparing effects of high doses of turmeric verus NSAID therapy in patients suffering from Rheumatoid arthritis showed improvements in morning stiffness, walking time and joint swelling after only two weeks with supplementing curcumin comparable to the group using NSAID therapy. Although difficult to absorb on its own, there are several products that provide Curcumin in an absorbable form that we carry at Arizona Natural Medicine. Ask one of our doctors for more information on this herb and see if supplementation is right for you.
Two. Coconut Oil-This wonderful oil contains lauric acid, which is converted by the body into Monolaurin. Monolaurin is well known for its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties. The naturally occurring saturated fat found in coconut oil has a variety of health benefits including promoting cardiovascular health, improving metabolic and thyroid function, and regulating blood sugar. Coconut oil is a stable cooking oil and is preferred over butter, olive oil, and vegetable oil for high heat cooking.
Three. Leafy greens-Greens are full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals, making them one of the most nutrient dense foods available. Greens contain chlorophyll, the pigment necessary for plant photosynthesis. According to the Linus Pauling Institute, the molecular structure of chlorophyll is similar to that of hemoglobin, a blood pigment found in human blood. The central atom of chlorophyll is magnesium, whereas in hemoglobin, it is iron. Higher levels of hemoglobin in the bloodstream allow for increased levels of oxygen-rich blood to circulate throughout the body. The chlorophyll in leafy greens contributes to the anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and blood sugar stabilizing properties of this superfoods group.
Four. Avocado-This deliciously creamy and filling fruit contains a plethora of healthy fats and nutrients. About 85% of calories in avocado come from fats, specifically phytosterols, polyhydroxylated fats (PFAs) and oleic acid. The latter has been shown in research to help in the transport and absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as carotenoids (beta-carotene, alpha-carotene and lutein), which coincidently, are also found in avocados. The carotenoids within avocados play a key role in the anti-inflammatory characteristics of this superfood.
Five. Walnuts-Walnuts are an amazing source of Vitamin E not just the more commonly known alpha-tocopherol form, but also, the gamma-tocopherol form. This is significant as the gamma-tocopherol form of vitamin E has stronger cancer-protective and anti-inflammatory effects than the alpha-tocopherol form according to the American Institute for Cancer Research. Also noteworthy, walnuts contain a vast amount of phenols, 90% of which are found in the skin, the silky covering that encases the actual nut.
In conclusion, there is no single food that provides all the nutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that your body needs. However, consuming a variety of superfoods that contain a high nutrient density, antioxidant value and alkaline pH can help to stimulate cellular health and provide body wide benefits.

MIND BODY CENTER
Meditation improves the immune system, research shows
Meditation improves the immune system, research shows Meditation improves the immune system, reduces blood pressure and even sharpens the mind, according to research. The practice - an essential part of Buddhist and Indian Yoga traditions - has entered the mainstream as people try to find ways to combat stress and improve their quality of life.
Now new research suggests that mindfulness meditation can have benefits for health and performance, including improved immune function, reduced blood pressure and enhanced cognitive function.
The study, published in the latest issue of the journal Perspectives on Psychological Science, draws on existing scientific literature to attempt to explain the positive effects.
The goal of this work, according to author Britta Hazel, of Justus Liebig University and Harvard Medical School, is to "unveil the conceptual and mechanistic complexity of mindfulness, providing the big picture by arranging many findings like the pieces of a mosaic."
The authors specifically identify four key components of "mindfulness" - the state of meditation - that may account for its effects: attention regulation, body awareness, emotion regulation, and sense of self. Together, these help us deal with the effects of stress.
Dr Hazel said the components are closely intertwined so an improvement in attention regulation, for example, may improve our awareness of our physiological state. Body awareness, in turn, helps us to recognise the emotions we are experiencing.
She said: "Understanding the relationships between these components, and the brain mechanisms that underlie them, will allow clinicians to better tailor mindfulness interventions for their patients."
However, the framework underscores the point that mindfulness is not a vague cure-all. Effective mindfulness meditation requires training and practice and it has distinct measurable effects on our subjective experiences, our behaviour, and our brain function.
Dr Hazel said: "We hope that further research on this topic will enable a much broader spectrum of individuals to utilise mindfulness meditation as a versatile tool to facilitate change both in psychotherapy and in everyday life."

Real People
I was hesitant to try acupuncture because it was foreign. I did and it has changed my life. Not just because acupuncture can help my health but now I am open-minded to other things. It has changed my perspective on health care. I feel more vibrant, energetic, and I love that it has positively affected me mentally. It made me more positive and I think clearer.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better! I forward this health and energy on to my new baby.

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.

Dr. Khoury is friendly, caring and very knowledgeable about naturopathic medicine, as well as conventional western medicine practices. She has a wealth of information available about non-traditional treatments such as herbal remedies, acupuncture, and other eastern medicine practices. Dr. Khoury is passionate about naturopathic medicine, and is a great source for a variety of treatment options delivered with compassionate care.

My first visit with Dr. Lane was after I had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I had decided to try a natural approach and Dr. Lane was recommended by a good friend. After talking with her for a while I decided to tell her about some other problems I had, and after listening to her I was so impressed that I decided to give it a try. In the back of my mind thinking could this really work? I have an eye condition called Cystoid Macular Edema and for about the past 18 yrs. I have seen a retinal specialist who has given me numerous injection into the eye to help with the swelling with only slight temporary relief. For the past 11 months I have followed Dr. Lane's advice which is all natural and have seen significant changes in my eye condition to the point that my other Dr. no longer mentions surgery or injections in my eye. I can tell by the look on his face when he looks at my test results that he is totally amazed. For being somewhat skeptical in the beginning I am definitely a believer now in natural medicine! If anyone would like more information I am happy to share my story.

This past December the pain in my hips, neck and shoulders had become unbearable. At the age of 75, with advancing AS (ankylosing spondylitis), I did not want to begin a regiment of western medical prescriptions for pain pills because of their addictive nature. I began searching for an alternative approach to my problem. That is where I was introduced to Dr. Khoury, who used acupuncture and her superb knowledge of natural medicine to help reduce my pain level by more than 60%. Her understanding and use of eastern medical practices has helped me to reduce the high stress levels resulting from acute pain. In addition she has nurtured me through a lot of baggage relating to internal problems resulting from 26 years of military service in three different war zones. Dr. Khoury is without a doubt a valuable asset to her profession. With all the wonderful attention she has given, she has also exhibited the highest standards of professionalism, standards I have not seen with doctors in western medicine. She was able to sit with me and speak on the level of a professional care giver about my needs, always looking for ways she could help me. She has rekindled a belief in myself, and for that alone I am very grateful

Since becoming a patient of Dr.Khalsa at Arizona Natural Medicine all aspects of my health have improved. As a patient of Dr.Khalsa I am treated as a whole person. All issues I came to the office with were discussed and a treatment plan was made. I love being a patient at Arizona Natural Medicine.
- Lori
"I first came to Arizona Natural Medicine for help with my fibromyalgia symptoms. At that time, my symptoms were so bad that I could barely get around, I couldn't think straight, I couldn't remember for more than a few hours into the past or into the future and my prospects for having any kind of life did not exist, at all, period!
That was around eight years ago. Now, I can say with complete honesty that I've regained most of my mobility, I have a mind that I actually recognize and most importantly, I now have a life, one that I can enjoy and can share with my wife and my family members. Although my struggle to regain my life has been a long one, Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa have been with me every step of the way. They simply will not give up on you. Ever!
Both of these doctors have helped me in so many ways over the years that I've lost count. But, if I were to try and pick their greatest contribution to my life, thus far, it would have to be their success in teaching me how to look beyond my fibromyalgia and toward a fully holistic approach to life itself.
So, when you combine these masterful skills with their genuinely warm and caring spirits, you can't help but feel right at home when you come visit with them.
To be honest, I don't have the words to adequately express my heart felt gratitude and appreciation for the work that Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa have done for myself and for my family. I really do not know what I would do without them. I really don't. So, does the phrase "Thank God for Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa" seem a bit much? Well, not as far as I'm concerned! As a matter of fact, it feels exactly right to me."

Naturopathic medicine has always offered me alternatives that I could never find in the traditional medical model. I am so happy that I have options for my health care. The Heel injectable therapy by Dr. Lane has really helped my pain level reduce. I am hopeful that I have the tools to stay healthy.
