DIABETES AND AGING
Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which a person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin (insulin resistance), or both. People with high blood sugar will typically experience frequent urination (polyuria), increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased hunger (polyphagia).
Diabetes is a common condition of aging. In 2012, 29.1 million Americans, or 9.3% of the population had diabetes, these numbers continue to increase each year. Diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death in the United States. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are type-2 (DM-II), which is what I will be focusing on in this article.
Some of the factors that increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes include being overweight, physical inactivity, eating an unhealthy diet and genetics (a close relative who has/had type 2 diabetes, people of Middle Eastern, African, or South Asian descent).
Type 2 diabetes (DM-II) is a disease that generally develops as a result of poor life-style choices. Overweight and obese people have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a healthy body weight. People with increased visceral fat (that surrounds the organs) and belly fat (abdominal obesity) are especially at risk. Being overweight or obese causes the body to release chemicals that can destabilize the body's cardiovascular and metabolic systems, accelerating the aging process.
Heart disease and blood vessel disease are the biggest complications that develop in people with uncontrolled diabetes. Adults with diabetes have heart disease death rates about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes and the risk for stroke is also 2 to 4 times higher. Diabetes can cause poor blood flow in the legs and feet (peripheral artery disease) leading to pain and other complications. Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the nerves, which leads to loss of sensation or pain and burning of the feet. Approximately 60-70% of people with diabetes have some form of nerve damage. Blood vessel and nerve damage may lead to foot problems that can lead to amputations. More than 60% of leg and foot amputations are due to diabetes. Diabetes is also the leading cause of kidney failure in adults in the U.S.
Diabetes can also cause a variety of eye problems, some of which can lead to blindness if not addressed, including glaucoma, cataracts and diabetic retinopathy. Regular eye checks are vital for people with diabetes.
To prevent these complications it is important to re-establish healthy blood sugar regulation. Blood sugar is regulated by insulin produced by beta cells in the pancreas. When you consume a meal containing carbohydrates or sugar, an appropriate amount of insulin is released from the pancreas allowing the glucose (sugar) to enter the cells where is it utilized in the production of energy. However, if your diet includes large amounts of processed carbohydrates and sugar the pancreas over-produces insulin, and over time has the effect of creating a state of insulin resistance, as well eventual inadequate release of insulin from the pancreas, leading to high blood sugar or diabetes.
Research has shown that states of elevated blood sugar in people with diabetes causes mitochondrial damage to the beta cells in the pancreas that secrete insulin. Mitochondria, known as the cell's "powerhouse", produce most of every cell's supply of ATP, the prime fuel for cellular activity. When compromised in this way, the beta-cell's mitochondria begin to destroy the cell, worsening the diabetes. Resveratrol, a powerful anti-oxidant helps to enhance mitochondrial function and may prevent or delay the destruction of the beta cells.
Oxidative stress is also central to the damage caused by diabetes. Diabetics suffer from high levels of free radicals that damage blood vessels, nerves and other tissues throughout the body, accelerating the aging process. In the treatment of diabetes, it is important to not only focus on blood sugar control but also antioxidant therapy to help reduce oxidative damage and lower the risk of diabetic complications. These treatments might include vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, alpha-lipoic acid, manganese, selenium, zinc, amino acids like L-carnosine and N-acetyl cysteine, L-taurine, melatonin, resveratrol and CoQ10. It's important to work with your doctor to create an individualized plan for your specific needs.
Diet is one of the most significant influences in both developing and reversing DM-II. For example, drinking just one can of non-diet soda per day can raise your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, according to researchers from Imperial College London reported in the journal Diabetologia. Avoiding high-sugar foods and refined carbohydrates (white flour, sugar and white rice) is vital in restoring healthy blood sugar regulation. Your diet should also include plenty of fiber, healthy fats and protein, an abundance of vegetables and a moderate amount of fruit. A diet rich in anti-oxidants is also very important. This may include small red beans (dried), kidney beans, pinto beans, blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, walnuts, cooked artichokes, blackberries, prunes and raspberries.
Many people are able to control their type 2 diabetes symptoms or even reverse their diabetes by making healthy life-style changes like losing weight, following a healthy diet, doing plenty of exercise, and supplementing with nutrients and herbs that assist in healthy blood sugar regulation. Treatments might include but are not limited to chromium, vanadium, magnesium, gymnema, bitter melon, cinnamon and berberine. Specific dosages should be determined by your doctor.
If you are struggling with blood sugar dysregulation or diabetes ask one of the Naturopathic doctors at Arizona Natural Medicine for advice. Our goal is to support you in achieving optimal health with a focus on prevention and slowing the aging process of your body so that you can enjoy life with a youthful physical vitality.

Resveratrol and Anti-Aging
When people think of anti-aging external appearances come to mind; however, more importantly, anti-aging also refers to a person's internal cellular age and health. I would like to specify what I mean by the term "anti-aging." Anti-aging, in this context, can be defined as the slowing and prevention of age-related illness. The pursuit to find a remedy that maintains youthfulness and longevity has been in existence from the time of the ancient Egyptians and continues to present day. Humanity has, in essence, always been searching for a proposed "fountain of youth." Even though there is no single thing that ensures youthfulness, there are steps one can take to support graceful aging.
Most people know that following a clean diet coupled with engaging in a regular exercise routine can help to slow the aging process. Yet many people don't realize that anti-aging efforts can be supported, and even increased, by supplementation with specific vitamins and nutrients. This being said, let's explore how supplementation with Resveratrol can be an effective anti-aging tool.
Resveratrol is an antioxidant present in various plants and is found at higher concentrations in red grapes, berries, cocoa and peanuts. Unfortunately, the widespread use of pesticides has diminished the amount of Resveratrol in food sources and supplementation tends to be the most direct way to ensure optimal intake. Resveratrol is a phytoalexin (class of polyphenol) that is produced as part of a plant's defense mechanism against disease, stress and injury. Researchers believe that Resveratrol may offer similar protective benefits to humans via its anti-oxidant properties.
Antioxidants are molecules that inhibit the oxidation of other molecules. This is significant because oxidation can result in the formation of free radicals (unstable molecules) that can lead to cell damage or death. Oxidative damage within cells affects replication and transcription of mitochondrial DNA resulting in a decline of mitochondrial function eventually leading to cellular aging. Current evidence proposes that Resveratrol enhances mitochondrial function supporting cellular life span thus delaying cellular aging.
Like other antioxidants, Resveratrol works by inhibiting free radicals and, consequently, protecting and optimizing cellular function. Additionally to having its own antioxidant value, Resveratrol promotes other antioxidants in the body. It specifically preserves levels of glutathione helping to inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDLs) commonly referred to as "bad" cholesterol.
Aside from inhibiting the oxidation of LDLs, Resveratrol has many positive effects on cardiovascular health. It may inhibit platelet aggregation thereby decreasing the risk of blood clots and ultimately reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Furthermore, Resveratrol improves circulation by supporting the endothelium (inner lining) of small blood vessels. This is notable as endothelial dysfunction is thought to perpetuate the progression of atherosclerosis, a disease that causes gradual hardening and narrowing of the arteries.
Studies have demonstrated that supplementation with Resveratrol mimics caloric restriction by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing blood sugar levels. Caloric restriction is the practice of controlling calorie consumption all the while conserving good nutritional status. Caloric restriction can foster anti-aging in two ways. First, it promotes weight loss subsequently decreasing inflammation. Second, it stimulates autophagy, the body's way of removing damaged components and recycling them into new and useful parts. By supplementing with Resveratrol, one can reap the aforementioned benefits of caloric restriction without greatly limiting calorie consumption. This can be very beneficial for people diagnosed with conditions such as metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
In conclusion, if you are seeking to age gracefully, delay cellular aging as well as optimize cellular health and function then consider discussing the option of supplementing Resveratrol with one of the physicians at Arizona Natural Medicine. As always, we seek to individualize care and help each patient reach his or her health goals.

Dr. Oz's Anti-aging Meditation
Dr. Oz says there is something you can do for five minutes every day that can add years to your life-meditation. Just find a quiet place, even if it's the bathroom. "No one's going to bother you there," he says. "You can get five minutes of solace, of peace and quiet." To start your meditation, Dr. Oz says to say the word "yum," drawing out the word out as you say it. "That vibration stimulates your sinuses to release nitric oxide, a very important gas that relaxes your lungs and relaxes your blood vessels," he says. "It's one of the reasons we think meditation may be so effective." Dr. Oz says there are other ways to practice meditation as well. "Prayer is meditation," he says. "Just a few moments to yourself, not a lot, when no one can bother you to let it all slip away. It allows you to reboot your engine and get back on track."

Real People
I was hesitant to try acupuncture because it was foreign. I did and it has changed my life. Not just because acupuncture can help my health but now I am open-minded to other things. It has changed my perspective on health care. I feel more vibrant, energetic, and I love that it has positively affected me mentally. It made me more positive and I think clearer.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better! I forward this health and energy on to my new baby.

My first visit with Dr. Lane was after I had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I had decided to try a natural approach and Dr. Lane was recommended by a good friend. After talking with her for a while I decided to tell her about some other problems I had, and after listening to her I was so impressed that I decided to give it a try. In the back of my mind thinking could this really work? I have an eye condition called Cystoid Macular Edema and for about the past 18 yrs. I have seen a retinal specialist who has given me numerous injection into the eye to help with the swelling with only slight temporary relief. For the past 11 months I have followed Dr. Lane's advice which is all natural and have seen significant changes in my eye condition to the point that my other Dr. no longer mentions surgery or injections in my eye. I can tell by the look on his face when he looks at my test results that he is totally amazed. For being somewhat skeptical in the beginning I am definitely a believer now in natural medicine! If anyone would like more information I am happy to share my story.

This past December the pain in my hips, neck and shoulders had become unbearable. At the age of 75, with advancing AS (ankylosing spondylitis), I did not want to begin a regiment of western medical prescriptions for pain pills because of their addictive nature. I began searching for an alternative approach to my problem. That is where I was introduced to Dr. Khoury, who used acupuncture and her superb knowledge of natural medicine to help reduce my pain level by more than 60%. Her understanding and use of eastern medical practices has helped me to reduce the high stress levels resulting from acute pain. In addition she has nurtured me through a lot of baggage relating to internal problems resulting from 26 years of military service in three different war zones. Dr. Khoury is without a doubt a valuable asset to her profession. With all the wonderful attention she has given, she has also exhibited the highest standards of professionalism, standards I have not seen with doctors in western medicine. She was able to sit with me and speak on the level of a professional care giver about my needs, always looking for ways she could help me. She has rekindled a belief in myself, and for that alone I am very grateful

"I first came to Arizona Natural Medicine for help with my fibromyalgia symptoms. At that time, my symptoms were so bad that I could barely get around, I couldn't think straight, I couldn't remember for more than a few hours into the past or into the future and my prospects for having any kind of life did not exist, at all, period!
That was around eight years ago. Now, I can say with complete honesty that I've regained most of my mobility, I have a mind that I actually recognize and most importantly, I now have a life, one that I can enjoy and can share with my wife and my family members. Although my struggle to regain my life has been a long one, Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa have been with me every step of the way. They simply will not give up on you. Ever!
Both of these doctors have helped me in so many ways over the years that I've lost count. But, if I were to try and pick their greatest contribution to my life, thus far, it would have to be their success in teaching me how to look beyond my fibromyalgia and toward a fully holistic approach to life itself.
So, when you combine these masterful skills with their genuinely warm and caring spirits, you can't help but feel right at home when you come visit with them.
To be honest, I don't have the words to adequately express my heart felt gratitude and appreciation for the work that Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa have done for myself and for my family. I really do not know what I would do without them. I really don't. So, does the phrase "Thank God for Dr. Lane and Dr. Khalsa" seem a bit much? Well, not as far as I'm concerned! As a matter of fact, it feels exactly right to me."
