Help for Allergy Season

Allergy season has arrived. Allergy symptoms, such as nasal congestion, sneezing and an itchy or runny nose are common allergy symptoms known as allergic rhinitis or "hayfever". Allergy triggers can be found both indoors and outdoors, and can be year-round or seasonal. It's important to be aware of the times of day, seasons, places, and situations where your nasal allergy symptoms begin or worsen. If you can identify your triggers, and create a plan for avoiding them, you may be able to minimize symptoms. Depending on an individual's predisposition and immune function, allergic responses vary from person to person, but how do you help your body to not react to environmental allergens? There are many naturopathic treatments that can reduce or eliminate allergy symptoms. Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicines, homeopathy, homeopathic desensitization, and specific nutrients and botanicals like quercetin and stinging nettle may be helpful in addressing your symptoms. More importantly, if allergies are an underlying sign of a greater imbalance such as reduced immune function or reduced adrenal function, addressing the underlying cause is the best medicine.

If you are suffering from allergy symptoms this season, consider naturopathic treatment to address your distress.

Essential fatty acids  (EFAs)  are essential  nutrients that our bodies need for healthy cells, memory, growth, learning, and disease prevention. SalmonIn fact, since we do not make them, it is essential we get them either from our diet or from a supplement. Many people have heard the term essential fatty acids but they may not know that the Standard American Diet is rich in Omega 6 fatty acids which are pro-inflammatory and disease promoting.  One exception is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega 6 fatty acid found in borage oil and evening primrose oil that reduces inflammation, promotes healthy skin and hormones. What our diet really lacks is the Omega 3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA is vital in breast-feeding and pregnancy for proper fetal development, and is essential to a healthy mood, mind and memory. DHA is often used in the treatment of autism, ADHD, depression and Aspergers syndrome. In addition, EPA is anti-inflammatory and is used to treat inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and asthma. EPA is also important in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. One of the best sources of both DHA and EPA is wild salmon and fish oil. It is important to use a supplement free of heavy metals and environmental toxins. Check your labels on current supplements to make sure they are free of PCBs, heavy metals and pesticides. For a healthy body and mind, make sure your diet is abundant in the essential fatty acids.

 Remember to breathe!

Long, deep breathing is one of the simplest, most effective tools to manage stress and calm the mind. It's easy, it's free and it only requires 3 to 5 minutes per day. The key is to make sure you are breathing properly.

Proper long, deep breathing technique:

1) Sit or lay down in a quiet place (if possible)
2) Close your eyes
3) As you inhale, relax your abdomen and let it expand outward as your chest expands and your lungs fill up with air
4) As you exhale, pull your abdomen back in toward your spine, pushing the air out of your lungs
5) Allow the breath to be smooth and continuous
6) To end, inhale deeply, hold the breath for as long as you are able and then exhale and relax the breath

Moving your abdomen when you breathe allows you to move the diaphragm up and down, creating room for your lungs to expand in your chest cavity. Long, deep breathing stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, putting you into a state of relaxation.

Try it for yourself and experience the profound calming and healing effects of long, deep breathing!

I was hesitant to try acupuncture because it was foreign. I did and it has changed my life. Not just because acupuncture can help my health but now I am open-minded to other things. It has changed my perspective on health care. I feel more vibrant, energetic, and I love that it has positively affected me mentally. It made me more positive and I think clearer.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.
