Monthly Spotlight on Naturopathic Medicine

Natural Flu Prevention & Treatment
As we head into the winter months, it is time to protect ourselves against the flu and common cold. Everyone is asking, what can we do to prevent ourselves from getting sick? Arizona Natural Medicine offers several natural therapies that are effective at preventing or treating the flu. Many of these therapies have anti-viral properties and focus on stimulating the immune system to ward off infection. Some of the immune building therapies we offer at Arizona Natural Medicine are listed below.

1) Engystol (injection and/or oral tablets): This is a homeopathic preparation that helps boost the immune system and has anti-viral effects. Injections can be given 1-2 times per month or taken orally every day during cold and flu season as a preventative measure. It is safe for use in children.

2) Gripp-Heel (injection and/or oral tablets): This is a homeopathic preparation that helps treat symptoms of the flu such as fever, body aches and malaise. This is often used in combination with Engystol either as an injection or orally. It is safe for use in children.

3) Arabinex (Arabinoglactan): This is an extract from the Larch tree and is in the form of a powder. It increases activity of the immune system against viruses and bacteria. It is great to use every day for prevention of colds and flus or can be used for treatment of the flu for a faster recovery. It is great for kids too because is doesn't have a strong taste and dissolves easily in liquids.

4) Biovegetarian: This is a tablet that combines vitamins that help boost the immune system (vitamins A and C) and various herbs that stimulate immune function and have antimicrobial effects to help treat infections. This supplement is typically used to treat an active infection but can also be used daily for prevention.

5) Vitamins C, D and A: Each of these vitamins help to boost the immune system and can be taken separately or together for prevention or treatment of the flu. Women who are pregnant need to be careful not to take more that 5000 IUs of Vitamin A per day.

6) Nutritional Myers' cocktail IV's: These intravenous vitamins are an excellent treatment to keep the immune system strong. It can also be used as a treatment for colds or flus and may help decrease severity of symptoms and shorten the course of illness.

The above treatments are a small sample of tools that have immune enhancing properties to help you fight off the cold and flu. In years past, an injection of Engostyl and Gripp Heel once monthly has warded off colds and flus effectively for many patients. However, it is always best to customize a therapeutic plan to the patient's individual needs.

Please ask about this at your next visit so that you and your family can stay healthy during this year's cold and flu season!

Vitamin D and the Flu
Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, better known for its connection and vital role in bone density, is also a potent immune system modulator.  Vitamin D in its active form is known as cholecalciferol or Vitamin D3, and is produced endogenously (inside the body) when exposed to UV sunlight. It can also be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines and in fortified foods such as milk, soy milk, and breakfast cereals. Vitamin D has been the subject of many recent research articles discussing its importance in immune function.

The Vitamin D receptor is expressed by most cells of the immune system, including T cells and antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages. This means that Vitamin D stimulates the body to fight bacteria and viruses. Many researchers have suggested that Vitamin D levels are low in the winter due to reduced exposure to the sun, and therefore correlate with an increased incidence of the flu and upper respiratory infections in the winter season. In fact, one recent study of 19,000 adults concluded those with low blood levels of Vitamin D3 contracted colds or upper respiratory infections 55% more than those with normal blood levels of Vitamin D3.

Another recent study by Dr. John Cannell published in the Cambridge University Press' Journal of Epidemiology and Infection, showed evidence that lower vitamin D blood levels during the winter can account for the increased transmissibility of the influenza virus. And therefore, according to the Vitamin D expert, Dr. Cannell, increasing levels of Vitamin D can help prevent traditional influenza infections by strengthening the immune system.

How much is enough? Most recent studies suggest 2,000 IU per day is recommended for adults for stimulating immune function and prevention of the flu and upper respiratory infections. Of course, Vitamin D needs can vary person to person. Vitamin D is also important in bone health, phosphorus absorption, type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, autoimmune conditions, and fibromyalgia. Vitamin D can be tested in the blood to determine your long term needs. If you are unsure how much vitamin D to take, consult your Naturopathic medical doctor.

Dr. Lane, thank you for your tireless energy in helping me re-new my life! You have fueled my life with hope like no other doctor has ever done! Years ago I came to you with severe aches and pain due to fibromyalgia, and after being seen by so many other doctors I had given up hope. I thank my friend each day for having introduced me to you! I still suffer from fibromyalgia but it is much more manageable than ever before! My energy levels are at the highest they have ever been since I was diagnosed with fibro, my spirit is happier and you have been the instrument to that success! Not only have you provided the tools to live healthier, but you have become my most trusted confidant! The team you have formed is a mere reflection of your dedication to your patients! Dr. Khalsa and Rosemary are just as wonderful! Thank you for your constant, unwavering and wonderful relationship you have with your patients!   BTB - Phoenix, AZ

Acupuncture and cupping therapy with Dr. Lane have really improved my overall health and energy levels. I've been a patient for several years and have also seen Traditional Chinese Medical Doctors in China and the care at Arizona Natural Medicine has been the best by far.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.
