Environmental Medicine
What You Should Know

NatureLakeSnowToxins are prevalent in our daily lives. We are exposed to a barrage of chemicals through our food and water supply, the air we breathe and sometimes from our homes or work place. Through time this exposure can begin to cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches or can even be a cause of serious illnesses such as cancer.

According to the National Environmental Education Foundation, common concerns about chronic exposure to pesticides include:

  • Cancer. Over 60 active ingredients for pesticides have been classified as probable human carcinogens by EPA or the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
  •  Central nervous system effects. Many insecticides and fumigants are designed specifically to target the nervous system of the pest they are intended to control. Scientific evidence suggests that humans may experience chronic neurologic or neurobehavioral effects following high levels of exposure to certain types of pesticides (Keifer and Mahurin, 1997).
  •  Reproductive effects. Many pesticides have been identified as developmental or reproductive toxicants based on animal studies. Sever et al (1997) concluded, "Areas of particular concern include infertility and time to pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, neural tube defects, and limb reduction defects."
  • Asthma. An Institute of Medicine report (Institute of Medicine, 2000) concluded that there is evidence suggesting that high level exposures to some pesticides may elicit persistent asthma.

Chronic environmental exposure to toxins weakens our immune and nervous system, affects proper digestive function and can mimic hormones and disrupt their regulation in our bodies leading to women's health issues and possible infertility. A high level of toxins can also overload our liver's ability to filter and remove them from our bodies creating global effects on our health. This may lead to chronic conditions such as fatigue, headaches, mood disorders, pain or more serious health issues such as cancer.

How can you determine if you have too much toxic exposure? Our skilled doctors at Arizona Natural Medicine , take a thorough historyand gather the appropriate information to determine if your toxic exposures may be affecting your health. We offer specialized testing in order to measure your toxic load. We provide detoxification protocols that can be used to clear these toxins from your body and restore your health.

Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle, also known as Our Lady's Thistle, and St. Mary's Thistle is most widely recognized for its detoxifying properties and protection of the liver. Milk Thistle is a flowering plant in the daisy family (Asteraceae). Milk Thistle It is native to southern and western Europe but cultivated and naturalized in America. Herbalists have a long tradition using Milk Thistle as a "liver tonic" and as a "lymphagogue". The herb is known to promote portal, hepatic and lymphatic circulation. Although it can be eaten as a food, it has widely been used as an herb in teas or used in a supplement form. Milk thistle contains a group of flavonoids called silymarin that are believed to reduce liver damage, protect new liver cells from toxins and reduce liver inflammation. Milk Thistle is a strong antioxidant that battles free-radical oxidative damage. In addition, Milk Thistle demonstrates its protective effect on the liver via Silymarin and its role in the biochemical liver detoxification pathway where toxins, drugs and biochemical agents such as hormones are broken down.

Some of the first historical data and research of Milk Thistle's liver protective effect are related to Amanita phalloides mushroom poisoning, where Milk Thistle was able to antidote the mushroom's poisoning effect.

Other research suggests there may be some positive benefits form silymarin in the following conditions: liver cirrhosis, liver disease, acute viral hepatitis, cancer of the breast, cervix and prostate, diabetes, dyspepsia, high cholesterol, liver damage from drugs or toxins, and menopausal symptoms.

In clinical trials Milk Thistle seems to be well tolerated. However, individuals who have allergies to the Aster family to such plants as daisies, ragweed, crythasymum or artichokes could have an allergic reaction.

Milk Thistle has been used by herbalists for over 2,000 years but conventional science has slowly been illuminating Milk Thistle's ancient wisdom into medical application to protect the liver and possibly prevent or reduce other disease processes and restore vitality.

If you are not sure if Milk Thistle is right for you, ask your doctor at Arizona Natural Medicine and we can help you find out if Milk Thistle can benefit you!

I was hesitant to try acupuncture because it was foreign. I did and it has changed my life. Not just because acupuncture can help my health but now I am open-minded to other things. It has changed my perspective on health care. I feel more vibrant, energetic, and I love that it has positively affected me mentally. It made me more positive and I think clearer.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.
