GOING GREEN

enjoying sunshineMake the luck of the Irish a year round event by going GREEN! We are all exposed to toxins from our environment on a regular basis which can have a negative impact on our health. The best way to decrease your body burden from toxins is avoidance. Here at Arizona Natural Medicine, we have tips to help make your diet, personal care products and home environment GREEN!

Diet:

  • Avoid the "Dirty Dozen" list or be sure to buy these fruits and vegetables organic to avoid pesticide exposure. This includes apples, celery, strawberries, peaches, spinach, imported nectarines, imported grapes, sweet bell peppers, potatoes, domestic blueberries, lettuce, and kale/collard greens.
  • Eat the "Clean 15" least toxic fruits and vegetables. This includes onions, sweet corn, pineapples, avocado, asparagus, sweat peas, mangoes, eggplant, domestic cantaloupe, kiwi, cabbage, watermelon, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, and mushrooms.
  • Do not eat farmed or Atlantic salmon. Instead, eat wild Alaskan salmon.
  • Eat fish with the lowest mercury content. Avoid eating mackerel, marlin, orange roughy, shark, swordfish, tilefish, and tuna because they have the highest mercury content.
  • Choose grassfed, grassfinished, hormone and antibiotic-free meats.

Personal Care Products:

  • Check out your personal care products at http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. This is a fantastic cosmetic database for you to learn what is in your daily personal care products. Just because the label says "natural" does not necessarily mean it is safe.
  • Discontinue use of products that contain: fragrances, dyes, parfum, polyethylene glycol, anything ending in "eth", benzoic acid, and anything ending in "paraben".
  • Use non-scented laundry detergent and dryer sheets.

Home Environment:

  • Look at the ingredients of your cleaning supplies. Usually, the fewer ingredients, the better. Vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice are inexpensive natural cleaning products.
  • Do not wear shoes indoors because you could be tracking in pesticides and other environmental toxins into your home.
  • Replace your home air filters every 10-12 weeks with high quality pleated filters.
  • Do not smoke or let others smoke indoors. Thirdhand smoke is the residue from cigarette smoke that clings to hair, carpets, and furniture.
  • Consider purchasing a room air purifier with HEPA filter.

These simple tips can help make a huge difference in your toxin exposure and overall health. This St. Patrick's Day, why not celebrate by making your environment GREEN!

Artichokes"The Green Food"

ArtichokeThe Artichoke is a low-calorie, nutrient-rich vegetable. According to the USDA, one medium Artichoke is an excellent source of fiber and vitamins and a good source of vitamin C, potassium, folate and magnesium. The United State Department of Agriculture reports, one medium artichoke contains only 60 calories, almost no fat (0.19 grams), 6.9 grams of fiber and 4.19 grams of protein. Artichokes are also a natural and rich source of antioxidants. In fact, according to a 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, cooked Ocean Mist artichokes are the highest antioxidant source among all fresh vegetables.

High in Antioxidants

A study done by the USDA found that artichokes have more antioxidants than any other vegetable and they ranked seventh in a study of the antioxidant levels of 1,000 different foods. Some of the powerful antioxidants in artichokes are quercertin, rutin, anthocyanins, cynarin, luteolin, and silymarin.

Detoxifies and Protects the Liver

The liver is the most complex of the body's organs. It is important for maintaining a healthy immune system. When toxins build up in the liver it is unable to function adequately. According to 'Natural Detox', some possible signs that the liver may need cleansing include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, PMS, skin irritation, irritability, and sensitivities to chemicals and medications. Because artichoke leaf extract stimulates bile production, this benefits the liver by helping it eliminate toxins.

Two predominant antioxidants, cynarin and silymarin, contained in artichokes are very beneficial to the liver. As published in the September 2008 edition of Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology, researchers investigated whether pre-treatment with artichoke extract could protect against liver damage. They found that artichoke extract administered prior to exposure to a known liver toxin demonstrates the ability to prevent liver injury. Some studies suggest artichoke may even regenerate liver tissue. Artichokes have long been used in folk and alternative medicine as a treatment for liver ailments and the scientific studies are now proving them to be accurate.

Cancer Prevention and Treatment

Studies done with artichoke leaf extract have found that they induce apoptosis (cell death) and reduce cell proliferation in many different forms of cancer, including prostate cancer, leukemia, and breast cancer. An Italian study found that a diet rich in the flavanoids present in artichokes reduces the risk of breast cancer.

The Yoga Cleansing "Breath of Fire"

Meditation

Breath of fire is one of the foundational breathing techniques used in Kundalini yoga. It helps to release toxins from the body through the lungs. Regular practice of this breath helps to lessen the toxic burden on the body and allows you to feel healthy and energized.

Breath of fire is a rapid, rhythmic and continuous breath through the nose. If you don't have experience with this breath it is important to start slow and gradually build up, both in the pace of the breath and the amount of time it is done.

How to do the breath of fire

Breath of fire is a rapid breath, in and out through the nose, pumping the navel center with each breath. The navel point (abdomen) moves in with the exhale and relaxes out with the inhale. The power of the breath comes from the navel center.

Your chest, shoulders and face should remain relaxed while practicing this breath.

It helps to start the breath slowly at first to get the proper rhythm of the breath, then the pace can be increased as you feel comfortable.

The breath is similar to panting like a dog, but through the nose instead of the mouth. To get the rhythm of the breath it may help to try this first. Stick your tongue out and pant like a dog. Place one hand over your abdomen and make sure it is moving in with the exhale and out with the inhale. It helps to focus on the exhale when first learning this breath, the inhale is more automatic and relaxed.

People who are not used to doing breathing exercises may feel a little dizzy at first. If this happens then stop the breath and start with very short periods (30 seconds) of practice. With time it will help to exercise the lungs and expand your lung capacity.

You can start with 1-3 minutes of breath of fire and extend the time from there as you feel more comfortable with the breath (a very advanced practice would be 11 minutes).

Beginning a Practice of Breath of Fire

1. Sit straight (in cross-legged pose or in a chair) and place the hands in prayer pose (palms together at the center of the chest, thumbs gently pressed against the sternum).

2. Close your eyes and begin a steady breath of fire for 1-3 minutes.

3. Inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds, exhale and relax.

Acupuncture and cupping therapy with Dr. Lane have really improved my overall health and energy levels. I've been a patient for several years and have also seen Traditional Chinese Medical Doctors in China and the care at Arizona Natural Medicine has been the best by far.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby.

Naturopathic medicine has always offered me alternatives that I could never find in the traditional medical model. I am so happy that I have options for my health care. I am hopeful that I have the tools to stay healthy.

For 15 years, I have been under the care of various naturopaths, but until now, I hadn't experienced anyone who was the "complete package."  Dr. Kiera Lane is.  She has all of the components necessary to provide the highest level of care a patient could want or need.  Dr Lane is a gifted physician.  She has a unique combination of compassion, superior intellect and expertise, a kind and gentle personality, as well as an unpretentious demeanor. She is able to precisely diagnose and prescribe the accurate medication for her patients' unique problems.  One of the keys to her success is her ability to ask the right questions to ascertain the information needed to diagnose and treat a patient's individual ailments.  Another key to success is her capability to understand that each patient is a distinct individual, thus eliminating the possibility of a "one-size-fits-all" remedy for all of her patients.

She also allows patients to work at their own pace.  Some patients are more aggressive about their treatment than others, and that is fine with her.  She simply wants her patients to feel better and wants to help prevent unnecessary illnesses.  You choose the pace, she'll work with you at that pace.

I recently experienced a diversity of ailments that Dr. Lane was able to precisely diagnose and treat with a combination of acupuncture, injections, remedies and homeopathic supplements.  I not only recovered quickly, but I've never felt better!

I feel very fortunate to be in the capable hands of such a remarkable doctor.

I was hesitant to try acupuncture because it was foreign. I did and it has changed my life. Not just because acupuncture can help my health but now I am open-minded to other things. It has changed my perspective on health care. I feel more vibrant, energetic, and I love that it affected me mentally. It made me more positive and I think clearer.

C.L.- Chandler, AZ

Dr. Lane is a phenomenal doctor. She is thorough and methodical, leaving no stone unturned in her quest for good health and quality of life. Her diagnosis is based on sound, thorough investigation and she makes sure to study her patient's medical history as well as the causes of the specific issue. While other doctors may give a verdict based on narrow inquiry, Dr. Lane takes a holistic approach, considering causes other doctors often neglect.
In my personal case, Dr. Lane has helped with a situation many doctors had considered hopeless. She suggested a longer but healthier path for recovery that ultimately did the job minus the risks present in prevailing medical procedures.
I am eternally grateful to Dr. Lane for her insight, patience and perseverance in treating me and for the effect her treatment had on my long-lasting quality of life. I recommend Dr. Lane wholeheartedly to any patient.

L.P.- San Diego, CA

I not only trust my patient referrals to Dr. Lane, I see her myself for my own healthcare needs. Her breadth and depth of clinical application and understanding of the human body is unrivaled when it comes to holistic, complementary and alternative forms of healthcare. I would highly recommend Dr. Lane.

Local Doctor - Chandler, AZ

When I started coming to Dr. Khalsa office I was living with migraines twenty out of thirty days a month. I have had them since I was seven. I had learned to deal with them since I was told for many years they were just allergies or tension. I was diagnosed with migraines in the late 90's and tried all the traditional medications. Some helped, but not for very long and they only relieved the pain, never taking them away. When I started menopause the migraines were horrible. I had spent a year trying new drugs that didn't work.   I remember going to see my grandson for two weeks and I spent most of it with migraines. I came home determined to try alternative medicine.

I feel so blessed to have found you! We tried several more conservative routes, but now my monthly IV therapy of B's and C's keep my migraines away!! I am so happy! I know I have tried to push it out to two months, but I find the migraines begin to creep back into my life, so monthly it is!

You have also helped me with the pain in my ankle that I shattered almost ten years ago. The acupuncture and heat lamp feel so good and help to relieve the pain. I am so thankful for your help especially since I am allergic to pain medications. Your talent has truly given me a new life. I can spend time with my family and enjoy life again! Thank you for everything you have done for me! You gave me my life back!
