Cold & Flu Prevention
Cold and flu season is just around the corner. Are you prepared? Some people opt for a flu shot for prevention. However, the flu shot alone may not prevent you from getting the common cold, other viruses or the numerous strands of the flu. The good news is there are other effective treatment options that help boost your immune system so it is strong and can ward off colds, flus and other viruses during these winter months when we are the most vulnerable.

Of course we want to remember to do the "basics" to keep ourselves healthy and vibrant. Eating a healthy diet, avoiding sugar, drinking plenty of water, decreasing stress, getting regular exercise and plenty of sleep are all healthy self-care activities that contribute to our overall health.

At Arizona Natural Medicine, we have been providing valuable and effective treatments to prevent colds & flus for many years with good success. One of the most successful treatments we offer are injectable homeopathic immune boosting and anti-viral medicines called Engystol and Gripp Heel. They are homeopathic so they do not interfere with other medications. They can be used even if you have had the flu shot. They boost your body's own natural immunity so when you are exposed to a cold or virus you are less apt to catch it. These two injectables can be used separately or in conjunction with each other, with a synergistic effect. They are helpful for prevention or treatment of colds and flus. Engystol is primarily used as an anti-viral agent as well as for immune stimulation. Gripp Heel helps with treatment of classic influenza symptoms, such as fatigue, fever, body aches and joint pain. Since these injectable therapies are homeopathic preparations they are very safe and have little to no side effects. The injections can be used preventatively or at the onset of cold or flu symptoms to shorten the durantion and intensitiy. Many of our patients get monthly injections during the winter months as a preventive strategy but we advise each patient individually.

These homeopathic therapies are also available in oral tablets as a complement to the injectable therapies. The tablets are also a nice option for children that don't want to get an injection.

Your individual needs and the frequency of these injections can be determined by your doctor. So make sure you ask us about these safe and effective therapies as we head into cold and flu season this year!

Vitamin D and the Flu
Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, better known for its connection and vital role in bone density, is also a potent immune system modulator.  Vitamin D in its active form is known as cholecalciferol or Vitamin D3, and is produced endogenously (inside the body) when exposed to UV sunlight. It can also be found in fatty fish, such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines and in fortified foods such as milk, soy milk, and breakfast cereals. Vitamin D has been the subject of many recent research articles discussing its importance in immune function.

The Vitamin D receptor is expressed by most cells of the immune system, including T cells and antigen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells and macrophages. This means that Vitamin D stimulates the body to fight bacteria and viruses. Many researchers have suggested that Vitamin D levels are low in the winter due to reduced exposure to the sun, and therefore correlate with an increased incidence of the flu and upper respiratory infections in the winter season. In fact, one recent study of 19,000 adults concluded those with low blood levels of Vitamin D3 contracted colds or upper respiratory infections 55% more than those with normal blood levels of Vitamin D3.

Another recent study by Dr. John Cannell published in the Cambridge University Press' Journal of Epidemiology and Infection, showed evidence that lower vitamin D blood levels during the winter can account for the increased transmissibility of the influenza virus. And therefore, according to the Vitamin D expert, Dr. Cannell, increasing levels of Vitamin D can help prevent traditional influenza infections by strengthening the immune system.

How much is enough? Most recent studies suggest 2,000 IU per day is recommended for adults for stimulating immune function and prevention of the flu and upper respiratory infections. Of course, Vitamin D needs can vary person to person. Vitamin D is also important in bone health, phosphorus absorption, type 1 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, autoimmune conditions, and fibromyalgia. Vitamin D can be tested in the blood to determine your long term needs. If you are unsure how much vitamin D to take, consult your Naturopathic medical doctor.

Dr. Lane, thank you for your tireless energy in helping me re-new my life! You have fueled my life with hope like no other doctor has ever done! Years ago I came to you with severe aches and pain due to fibromyalgia, and after being seen by so many other doctors I had given up hope. I thank my friend each day for having introduced me to you! I still suffer from fibromyalgia but it is much more manageable than ever before! My energy levels are at the highest they have ever been since I was diagnosed with fibro, my spirit is happier and you have been the instrument to that success! Not only have you provided the tools to live healthier, but you have become my most trusted confidant! The team you have formed is a mere reflection of your dedication to your patients! Dr. Khalsa and Rosemary are just as wonderful! Thank you for your constant, unwavering and wonderful relationship you have with your patients!   BTB - Phoenix, AZ

Acupuncture and cupping therapy with Dr. Lane have really improved my overall health and energy levels. I've been a patient for several years and have also seen Traditional Chinese Medical Doctors in China and the care at Arizona Natural Medicine has been the best by far.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.
