Monthly Spotlight on Naturopathic Medicine
Infertility and Acupuncture
Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a child despite trying for one year. It affects about 5.3 million Americans, or 9% of the reproductive age population, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. If you have been having roadblocks to starting your family or expanding your family, now more than ever, there is a multitude of modalities that can assist you in your reproductive goals. An integrative approach to address this condition can prove to be effective and transform your health along the way. At Arizona Natural Medicine, L.L.C., we offer an integrative model, utilizing Western medicine, Naturopathic Medicine, and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture to create harmony and reproductive health and increase your ability to conceive. This can be done without traditional infertility treatments or can be a transformative complement to traditional infertility treatments, such as intra-uterine implantation (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
Although acupuncture is thought to be an ancient Chinese therapeutic art, this 6,000 year old form of medicine is gaining scientific credibility due to current research. Studies have sited that the mechanism through which acupuncture influences female fertility involve several physiological actions. Acupuncture is believed to involve the central stimulation of endorphin secretion which in turn impact the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). GnRH acts on the pituitary gland via the brain to produces follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) which in turn stimulates follicle growth and induces ovulation. Acupuncture also increases blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. Many traditional fertility medications stimulate follicle development and ovulation. The result of this physiological chain of action through acupuncture is a positive effect on the uterus that favors implantation.
Acupuncture can be used alone to enhance fertility or used with other Western traditional fertility treatments, such as IVF and IUI.
A German study done in 2002 showed that of the 80 women who underwent IVF and received acupuncture, 34 women got pregnant, a success rate of 42.5%. Of the 80 women involved in the study who received IVF without any acupuncture treatments, only 21 women (26.3%) became pregnant.
More recently, an American study involving 114 women showed that 51% of the women who had acupuncture and IVF treatments became pregnant versus only 36% of the women who had IVF alone. Deeper analysis of this study revealed that, while 8% of the women in the acupuncture group miscarried, the rate of miscarriage in the IVF-only group was 20%. Furthermore, women who received acupuncture also had lower rates of ectopic pregnancies.
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine provide a low-cost, non-invasive option to enhance fertility with or without traditional Western medicine treatments of infertility. Acupuncture can improve blood flow to the uterus, improve thickness of the endometrial lining, decrease physical response to stress, balance hormones, and stimulate follicle development and ovulation.
If you think that acupuncture can assist you in your reproductive goals, let us know so we can help you to be as successful as possible, in a supportive, and restorative way! |

Magnesium
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and is essential to good health. Approximately 50% of total body magnesium is found in our bones. The other half is found predominantly inside the cells of our tissues and organs. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, keeps heart rhythm steady, supports a healthy immune system, regulates blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure, keeps bones strong and is involved in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.
Magnesium is a vital component of a healthy diet and a deficiency of this important mineral is relatively common. Data from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey suggests that substantial numbers of adults (about 32%) in the United States fail to get recommended amounts of magnesium in their diets. Low levels of magnesium in the body has been associated with the development of a number of illnesses such as migraines, asthma, fibromyalgia, ADD/ADHD, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mitral valve prolapse, hypertension and osteoporosis.
Eating a balanced, healthy diet, rich in vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes is essential to ensure adequate intake of magnesium. Green vegetables such as spinach are good sources of magnesium because the center of the chlorophyll molecule (which gives green vegetables their color) contains magnesium. Some legumes (beans and peas), nuts and seeds, and whole, unrefined grains are also good sources of magnesium. In addition, spices, nuts, cereals, coffee, cocoa, tea, and vegetables are rich sources of magnesium.
Magnesium is also available as a dietary supplement. It can be taken as a powder, capsules, tablets or can be administered as an intramuscular injection or intravenously (IV). Magnesium is one of the components of the Myers' cocktail IV which is used effectively in the treatment of adrenal fatigue and for immune support to treat and prevent colds and flus. When choosing an oral magnesium supplement it is important to choose a form that has maximum absorption potential. Magnesium oxide is often used in lower quality supplements because it is less expensive, but it is not very well absorbed by the body. Magnesium citrate is the most bioavailable form, it is easily absorbed and is often one of the criteria that we look for in evaluating a good quality multi-vitamin.
Magnesium is very helpful in treating menstrual or muscle cramps, hypertension, fatigue, muscle pain and tension, stress, insomnia, constipation and can be used in the prevention of many chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes and osteoporosis. The appropriate dosage of magnesium is individualized according to the patient's needs and the condition being treated. High levels of magnesium intake can cause diarrhea and everyone is different in how much they can tolerate. If loose stools develop with the use of magnesium simply lowering the dose usually remedies the problem.
If you have questions about the use of magnesium as a supplement to enhance your health, feel free to ask us about it at your next visit.

Real People
Acupuncture and cupping therapy with Dr. Lane have really improved my overall health and energy levels. I've been a patient for several years and have also seen Traditional Chinese Medical Doctors in China and the care at Arizona Natural Medicine has been the best by far. A.R. - Chandler, AZ
My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better! I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ

I have been suffering from lack of sleep and hot flashes for years. Since I have been seeing Dr. Lane, she has prescribed bio-identical hormones and I have noticed an improved quality in my sleep and my hot flashes are few and far between. I am very happy with the results. I would highly recommend her office to anyone.

Dr. Lane, thank you for your tireless energy in helping me re-new my life! You have fueled my life with hope like no other doctor has ever done! Years ago I came to you with severe aches and pain due to fibromyalgia, and after being seen by so many other doctors I had given up hope. I thank my friend each day for having introduced me to you! I still suffer from fibromyalgia but it is much more manageable than ever before! My energy levels are at the highest they have ever been since I was diagnosed with fibro, my spirit is happier and you have been the instrument to that success! Not only have you provided the tools to live healthier, but you have become my most trusted confidant! The team you have formed is a mere reflection of your dedication to your patients! Dr. Khalsa and Rosemary are just as wonderful! Thank you for your constant, unwavering and wonderful relationship you have with your patients! BTB - Phoenix, AZ
