 Allergies & Your Health

Seasonal allergies affect more than 22 million Americans, with symptoms occurring anywhere from early spring through late November. Seasonal allergies or "hayfever", also known as allergic rhinitis is the result of your immune system's over-reaction to substances that you have inhaled, such as pollen. The two types of allergic rhinitis are seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial allergic rhinitis, which occurs year-round. Hay fever is caused by outdoor allergens. Perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by indoor allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, and mold.

A family history of allergies, having other allergies, such as food allergies or eczema, exposure to second hand smoke, and males more than females are predisposing factors to developing seasonal allergies.

Although the symptoms of allergic rhinitis resemble that of a cold, they are not caused by a virus, rather an immunological reaction to a foreign substance. The body knows the difference between self and non-self. Allergens are identified by the body as non-self.  When you breathe in an allergen, your immune system springs into action, making antibodies to that substance causing an allergic response. This reaction is characterized by the release of histamine and chemicals known as leukotrienes that result in symptoms of runny nose, swelling of the nose, throat, and sinuses, sneezing, puffy and watery eyes.

The standard Western approach to treat allergies is the use of anti-histamines and steroids.Antihistamines block the action of histamine at receptor sites. They suppress the appearance of physical symptoms, however, they do nothing to redirect the underlying cause. Antihistamines also often produce undesirable side effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness and even low mood. Steroids used to reduce inflammation can cause suppression of the immune system and have a myriad of side effects, including mood swings, increased blood pressure, weight gain, and bone loss with prolonged use.

Natural therapies can work as effectively as conventional treatment with significantly less side effects. Homeopathic medications can eliminate and/or reduce allergy symptoms. Many of our patients are surprised that homeopathic treatment is so easy, well-tolerated, and eliminate the need for anti-histamines and other medications. In addition, acupuncture and botanical medicines can be an effective way to treat allergy symptoms and assisting your immune system. In some cases, addressing an underlying cause of allergies, such as adrenal fatigue, may be at the root of the susceptibility of developing allergies. It is important to consider each patient individually and determine the best treatment approach.

Along with effective natural treatment of allergies, there are preventative measures that can ensure a more pleasant springtime without the associated allergies symptoms. First, limit your exposure to allergens by using air filters in your home or office , using non-toxic, hypoallergenic soaps, covering pillows and blankets with allergy-proof cover, and keep your home and work space as clean as possible. Second, reduce animal products in your diet, especially meat and dairy products, as they contain high amounts of arachidonic acid, a fatty acid found exclusively in animal products that increases the production of leukotrienes which promote inflammation. Third, get adequate rest so you can recharge your immune system.

If you need help treating allergies this season, please let us know so we can help you find the best treatment option!

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. Unlike most mammals and other animals, humans do not have the ability to make their own vitamin C. Therefore, we must obtain vitamin C through our diet.

Vitamin C is required for the synthesis of collagen, an important structural component of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bone. It helps with wound healing and decreases the tendency toward easy bruising by strengthening blood vessels. Severe vitamin C deficiency can lead to scurvy, a potentially fatal disease. Symptoms of scurvy include bleeding and bruising easily, hair and tooth loss, and joint pain and swelling. Such symptoms appear to be related to the weakening of blood vessels, connective tissue, and bone, which all contain collagen.

Vitamin C is a highly effective antioxidant, acting to lessen oxidative stress in the body. Oxidative stress induced diseases include cardiovascular disease, hypertension, chronic inflammatory diseases, cancer and diabetes. Adequate intake of vitamin C is important for prevention and treatment of these diseases.

Vitamin C also boosts the function of the immune system, and accordingly, may protect against viral infections and other diseases. Vitamin C can be used effectively in combination with Bioflavanoids, such as Quercetin in the treatment of Allergic Rhinitis.

Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. Neurotransmitters are critical to brain function and are known to affect mood and energy.

Vitamin C is one of the most widely taken dietary supplements. It is available in many forms including tablets, capsules, crystalline powder and drink mix packets (Emergen-C). Mineral salts of ascorbic acid are buffered and, therefore, less acidic than ascorbic acid. They tend to be less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract than ascorbic acid and are a good option for sensitive individuals.

Vitamin C can also be obtained through the diet. Excellent sources of vitamin C include: citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits), kiwi fruits, strawberries, cantaloupe, papaya, brussel sprouts, broccoli, bell peppers and green leafy vegetables, such as kale and mustard greens.
A good goal is to eat nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily, because you will get a healthy dose of vitamin C along with an abundance of other vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals that are good for disease prevention and overall health.

Vitamin C exhibits remarkably low toxicity. Relatively large doses of vitamin C may cause indigestion, particularly when taken on an empty stomach. When taken in large doses, vitamin C causes diarrhea in healthy individuals. The level of bowel tolerance of vitamin C is variable and must be determined on an individual basis.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient in preventing disease and maintaining good health, so make sure you are getting plenty of it in your diet or supplementation plan.

Dr. Lane, thank you for your tireless energy in helping me re-new my life! You have fueled my life with hope like no other doctor has ever done! Years ago I came to you with severe aches and pain due to fibromyalgia, and after being seen by so many other doctors I had given up hope. I thank my friend each day for having introduced me to you! I still suffer from fibromyalgia but it is much more manageable than ever before! My energy levels are at the highest they have ever been since I was diagnosed with fibro, my spirit is happier and you have been the instrument to that success! Not only have you provided the tools to live healthier, but you have become my most trusted confidant! The team you have formed is a mere reflection of your dedication to your patients! Dr. Khalsa and Rosemary are just as wonderful! Thank you for your constant, unwavering and wonderful relationship you have with your patients!   BTB - Phoenix, AZ

Acupuncture and cupping therapy with Dr. Lane have really improved my overall health and energy levels. I've been a patient for several years and have also seen Traditional Chinese Medical Doctors in China and the care at Arizona Natural Medicine has been the best by far.

My acupuncture experience with Dr Khalsa at AZ Natural Medicine has been very positive. At a time when nothing else would provide relief, weekly acupuncture treatments have made a measurable difference in my low back pain and in my life. Increased energy is an added bonus. I am 3 weeks post partum and have every right to be exhausted. However, as my pain becomes more manageable I have a substantial increase in energy. Thank you Dr  Khalsa and AZ Natural Medicine for helping me to feel better!  I forward this health and energy on to my new baby. -CS. Chandler, AZ
