The majority of the 8,000+ people in Chacraseca are subsistence farmers. This means their families' daily meals and any other business interests, such as the local microcredit businesses or the hardware store, are dependent on the success of each year's crops. 
 
Right now, the community tractor, which serves nearly 300 farmers, is broken. It will cost $2,000 to get the engine repaired. And planting season begins in just 3 weeks!

If we cannot get the tractor repaired, their only option for getting their fields ready to plant is to rent a tractor from someone in a nearby community. This is very expensive, and they have to wait in a long line...often meaning they can't get their crops planted in time for the short spring growing season.
