It's quite a process getting donated wheelchairs from the U.S. to
Nicaragua! But our wonderful partners and trip participants are good sports about it...

One participant shared his thoughts on a wheelchair delivery in December-
Driving out into the countryside in the back of a pickup truck, dust flying everywhere, it seemed like we were in another world. We were heading out to meet a family in their home and to give their son a wheelchair. This was about all of the information I was aware of when we headed out.

We arrived after our our-long trek at a small house, shrouded in trees and various colorful flowers. We unpacked the wheelchair and were greeted by the mother and father of the family. The look in their eyes as they welcomed us into their home was one of so much gratitude; you could tell just how much it meant to them that we had come to visit. We were ushered into a room where their son was laid up in a hammock-type cot, his debilitating condition leaving him unable to talk or move himself to any great extent. A group of our guys proceeded to lift the son up and into the wheelchair. The atmosphere was quiet, almost spiritual. We adjusted the wheelchair for fit and the mother and father took turns pushing their son around their yard, smiles filling their faces. They had not been able to take him outside under the trees and sun for several years. It was truly a magical moment for all of us.

The thing that made this experience just that much more moving- Nicaragua is not a place where a wheelchair is affordable or accessible for just anyone. The country is the second poorest in the Western hemisphere and people exist very close to the edge of life. The fact, then, that we would bring a wheelchair from the U.S., through customs, by truck, out to this countryside home- a very reasonable and simple task for us in the grand scheme of things- meant the world to this family. Being able to make such an impact on the life of this family through such a simple act will have lasting influence on my life.

We are working on getting at least 25 more wheelchairs right now! Please contact us if you can help!
