Lakehill Seventh Grader Wins First Chair
Seventh grader Jacob Meazle
recently won the position of First Chair Double Bass in the UIL/TMEA Region 20 Orchestra.

"We are very proud of Jacob's hard work and accomplishment," said Performing Arts Chair Linda Booth.

Jacob auditioned competitively with 20 other bassists from greater Dallas area middle and high schools, for six positions. Students chosen for the Region 20 Orchestra will be involved in extensive rehearsals and clinics during the month of November, culminating in a concert performance at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22  at Irving ISD's Nimitz High School.

Jacob is completing his third year playing the double bass (also known as the upright bass).  He has previously played with The New School Montessori Strings, The Northern Cincinnati Youth Orchestra - Concertina Orchestra, and the Cincinnati Junior Strings Orchestra. He currently plays in the Young Performer's Orchestra of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestras. He studies double bass locally with Ted Grille.

In the summer of 2014, Jacob attended the 14th Annual Beginner's and Intermediate Bass Camp, hosted by the University of North Texas and directed by renown double bassist, Dr. Jeff Bradetich.

Jacob became interested in the bass when he completed a project on musician Eddie Cochran. "I really enjoyed listening to his music, and the bass gave the music its tone and beat," Jacob explained. "I enjoyed learning about him and the way his band put their music together. I could really picture myself playing the bass, and just decided to give it a try."

Training for Trek
A True Story of "Couch to 5K" Success

Assistant Headmaster Lara Gajkowski and her husband Russ Strawn are proof positive that Coach Karen's "Couch to 5K Plan" is the path to success. The couple has been following the plan since day one, and now have four-and-a-half weeks of running under their belts. "We have really improved our time," said Gajkowski. "I actually ran for 15 minutes straight last night--twice!"

"We are running 10 1/2-minute miles now," she said. "When we started, we were running 15-minute miles." During the first week of training, Gajkowski said they completed five miles in one hour and 13 minutes. Now they are running six miles in the same amount of time.

Gajkowski has been keeping a journal of her progress. They have incorporated bicycling and other aerobic workouts as cross training.

"Coach Karen's plan is so easy to follow," Gajkowski said. "She makes it easy to begin your training and get used to the program. I challenge all the couch potatoes out there to get out and start running!"

Gajkowski says she is surprised with how much progress they have made on the plan. "It's a part of our lives now," she said. "We have started arranging our schedules around Coach Karen. It has really been worth the effort."

She believes that anyone who starts today will be amazed at how much they can accomplish in just two weeks. "You can really make a lot of progress before the event."

Even someone who has never run before? "Anybody."

Gajkowski and Strawn hope to both place in their age groups at Trek. "I am really proud of us for sticking with the program. Coach Karen made it fun and easy, and we had a great time doing it together."

Sixth Grade Meals on Wheels
The sixth grade class has taken on Lakehill's Meals on Wheels route for the 2014-15 school year. Groups of two or three students deliver meals on the first, third, and fifth Wednesday of each month. The group delivered their first meals on September 17 and will continue the project through March. Already the experience is making an impact. "It made me feel so good to help people," said sixth grader Johnny Hirata. "Everyone was so nice. I would love to deliver meals again," said Andrew Ward. Jason Davis agreed, "It really was an inspiring experience. I am so glad our class got involved."

This Week at the ESC

Fifth grade really got their hands dirty this week. Using a sieve, they "cleaned" up their soil samples from the last visit and sifted them down to a very fine powder. This activity is in anticipation of upcoming chemical tests for water quality.

The third grade continued studying flowering plants. During this visit, they listened to Oh Say Can You Seed by Dr. Seuss on the iPads. It is an educational story about the parts of plants and is a class favorite. Students also went outside to find beautiful fall leaves to collect and press.

 Volleyball

Varsity
The Varsity Volleyball team capped off their District Championship run by going undefeated through District last Thursday with a three-set victory over East Texas Christian. See more pictures.

After losing to a tough Waxahachie Prep team on Tuesday in a playoff warm-up game, the focus now turns to tonight as they host Temple Holy Trinity for the first round of the State Playoffs. The game is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m

"I think the Waxahachie Prep game is exactly what we needed as a team to get ready for the first round of the playoffs," said Coach Jhoana Cayme-Mosley. "Going undefeated and winning district was a great accomplishment, but we are refocusing on bigger goals as we head into the playoffs."

Middle School Volleyball
Julia Bartholow and Heather Hines were selected to represent Lakehill in the All-Star game on October 16. Congratulations to both girls on this honor!

JV Volleyball
The JV Volleyball team wrapped up their season on October 16 with a two-set victory over East Texas Christian. The team finished with a 4-3 record. The girls worked hard and showed a lot of improvement throughout the season. See more pictures.

Cross Country

The Lakehill Cross Country team will head to Waco Connally Middle School in Elm Mott for the TAPPS Cross Country State Championships next Saturday, October 25. The race will include over 1100 runners in the ten classifications competing for both individual and team honors. The boys' race will begin at approximately 12:30 pm. Information for the race can be found here. Come on out and support our Warriors!

Varsity and Middle School Football

Both Lakehill football teams picked up easy wins last week without playing a single down of football. Greenville Christian was unable to field a team for their game with Lakehill's Varsity, and Irving Universal was in the same situation for their scheduled game with the Middle School Warriors. Both squads receive credit for a victory by virtue of forfeit.

Lakehill's varsity team now stands at 6-1 on the season (1-0 in district) and will travel to Temple this Friday night for a district game with Holy Trinity Catholic. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

The Middle School Warriors are currently 2-3 on the season and will travel to play local rival Dallas Lutheran on Thursday, October 23. Kickoff will be at 4:30 p.m.

The Homecoming Game and Celebration is scheduled for October 30 at 6:00 p.m. at the Warrior Athletic Complex. An Alumni Dinner will precede the game at 5:00 p.m. The game will also be streamed live and will be available on demand.
