Carnival 2012

Frightfully Fun

Halloween Carnival Brings Ghouls and Grins

Lower School ghouls and goblins showed off their costumes on October 31 during Lakehill's annual Halloween parade. Kindergarten students led the procession down the main hallway and through the building, before continuing to the gym for the Carnival. Parents, students, and faculty members lined the hallways to enjoy the parade.

Following the parade, the Parent Faculty Club (PFC) hosted the eagerly anticipated Halloween Carnival, complete with a cookie walk, bounce house, face painting and haunted house. "We had wonderful volunteers and great participation," said PFC President Colleen McCall. "I especially want to recognize Tanya Bauer and Holly Croft-Mahan, who did such a great job organizing the Carnival. Everyone had a great time."

MS Drama T Party

Middle School Drama Club Performs a Tongue-Twisting Tribute to the Letter T

The staff and guests of Tropicana Towers Hotel ride out Tropical Storm Thisbe with shtick and therapy-- and the intervention of a philanthropic vampire. An overworked tutor, a temperamental tennis pro, a tantrum-throwing movie star, and bickering acrobats are among the guests who leave the hotel happier than they were when they arrived.

Members of the Middle School Drama Club entertained the crowd on October 30 with a terrific performance in this tongue-twisting tribute to the letter T. An original play written by Julie Riggs, T Party included 24 fifth and sixth grade students. Seventh grade student James Praeger jumped in at the last minute to play one of the roles.

The play featured Ava Rheams as the vampire and Merritt McCaleb as the vampire hunter. Katie Anne Eastus, Haley Lopez, and Kira Willis played the Tatum sisters and Loveth Heard was Tasha Trevant. Hotel staff members were played by Emma Cowsert, Mason Schwaber, Emery Stobaugh, Niamh McKinney, and Chloe Luneborg. Hotel guests were played by Lily Gilbreath, Anders Ekstrom, James Praeger, Spencer Mihm, Elizabeth Motes, Stella Palmer, Jia Van Blargan, Aubrey Tierney, Abbey Sizemore, Lily Booth, Laura Wildman, Gaige McKnight, and Luke Jerome

Dad's Club Cooks Up A Spicy Celebration

Friday night was cause for a celebration of fun, food, and football. This special evening included the second-annual Dad's Club Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by Comerica Bank.

Lakehill's top chefs battled it out to be the Grand Champion of Chili in a fiery match-up before the Varsity game. The iron chefs threw their proverbial hats in the ring in a contest as varied as the meats used in their recipes.

Supporters sampled the tasty bowls and cast their votes for their favorites. Keith Mitchell gathered enough votes to take home the People's Choice Award. The team of expert judges, including Headmaster Roger Perry, local food and beverage icon Feargal McKinney, and Suzie Estrada of Comerica Bank, savored and evaluated each entry, naming Johan Ekstrom as the Grand Champion of Chili.

November 5 - 9
Middle School Canned Food Drive

The Middle School Student Council announced an amazing canned food drive to benefit three special organizations. The drive will focus on the most-needed item for each of three community partners, including The Brady Center, Vickery Meadows Food Pantry, and the White Rock Center of Hope. Each grade drew for a special item to collect. Fifth grade is focusing on canned fruit, sixth grade is collecting canned tuna, seventh grade is gathering canned vegetables, and eighth grade is stockpiling canned soup.

On November 7, the seventh and eighth grade boys will face off in a spirited Powder Puff Volleyball game. Middle School students may attend the game by bringing three cans of their grade's assigned food or $5. On November 9, Middle School students will square off in a building competition, using the cans they collected during the week.

Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF

UNICEF Students can help children around the world this year by participating in the Trick or Treat for UNICEF campaign. Donation boxes are due back by November 5.

Sharing the Warmth

Coats for Kids Lakehill collected 100 coats in the Coats for Kids drive. On Saturday, Middle and Upper School students will help sort through donations at Comerica Bank. Thanks to everyone who shared the warmth with children in east Dallas this winter! Remember, save your gently-used coats for next year's drive!

This Week at the ESC

The Upper School AP Environmental Science class didn't let their Halloween costumes get in the way as they caught minnows from the ESC pond and added them to their class project, EcoBottles

First graders continued their study of feathers this week while fifth grade continued its study of soil. Students completed a lab comparing the average settling rates of sand, gravel, and ESC soil. Students will then make their own soil, combining the three that they have studied.

Lakehill Runs Down the Wind

football10

Lakehill scored a major victory on October 26, defeating the Abilene Texas Wind, 37-34, on Community Night at the Warrior Athletic Complex. The Warriors jumped out to an early lead on Josh Wood's three touchdown receptions from Drew Norman, but the Wind made several big plays of their own to stay in the game. In the second half, Lakehill used a heavy rushing attack to control the clock, along with several key defensive stops to secure the win.

Keith Mitchell paced the Warriors with a season-high (and personal best) 215 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Drew Norman finished with 162 yards passing and three touchdowns.

In a change of schedule, Lakehill now finishes the season on Thursday night at 6:45 p.m. against Celina High School. This is the annual senior night celebration, honoring Lakehill's senior players in their last game at Lakehill. The Friday night Varsity game against San Antonio Cornerstone has been cancelled.

Middle School Football
The Middle School Warriors lost on Friday to a tough Abilene Texas Wind team, 24-12. The Warriors played hard and made some great plays but were unable to match the Wind. The Warriors, with a record of 4-4, are in a good position to end the season with a winning record. In their final game of the season, the Middle School team takes on Fort Worth Temple Christian on Thursday, November 1, at home at 5:00 p.m.
