Hope you've been able to make the most of these beautiful fall days. We're keeping our fingers crossed for continued good weather, because we still have a lot to do outdoors this month, including Polish the Pearl, neighborhood walks, street tree pruning, and more.

Westside Tree Pruning Volunteer Days
NW TreesUrban trees provide NW Portland with beauty, privacy, increased property value, and improved air and water quality. With simple maintenance we can insure Portland's trees provide maximum benefits and minimum conflicts. Join the City of Portland Urban Forestry and the Westside Portland Tree Guild to help prune street trees in NW Portland throughout October. Volunteers are needed for two workdays: Saturday, October 19, and Saturday, October 26.

No experience is necessary. All ages are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult. Training and supplies will be furnished. The events will be held rain or shine, so dress accordingly. Registration is required. Please register online here.

Polish the Pearl, Saturday 10/26  
Pearl District Neighborhood Assoc. Logo
The fall 2013 Polish the Pearl will be an all-out effort to clean and polish the Pearl. The stalwart Polish the Pearlies will be out rain or shine. Recyclers will do their wonderful work as well. Volunteers will fan out east to west across the District, starting at Burnside, then moving north towards Raleigh. Sign up in advance online.

We are also looking for Street Captains to help lead volunteers. If interested, don't be shy - sign up. Volunteers should "report for Pearl duty" no later than 8:45 AM to Peet's Coffee & Tea. Free coffee provided before heading out to the field. After the clean-up, we'll head to Chipotle to celebrate our accomplishment plus enjoy a free burrito. Be there...the Pearl District wants you!

Walktober: Neighborhood Routes

  red-leaves-shoe-sm.jpg Fancy a walk? Each October, Oregon Walks (formerly the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition) hosts Walktober, an entire month of walking events throughout the Metro region. This year, Neighbors West-Northwest and some of the coalition neighborhoods are joining up to lead "Neighborhood Routes," a walking tour through the Pearl District, Goose Hollow, and the Northwest District. Hear from neighborhood leaders and residents about neighborhood history, and learn about what the neighborhood associations are doing right now and what they hope to do in the future! The event will be held rain or shine, so dress for the weather and bring an umbrella just in case!

Washington Park Reservoir Project Survey
The Portland Water Bureau has been taking input over the past few months on the proposed Washington Park Reservoir Improvements Project. You can still have your say by taking their online survey, which is open until October 24. 
Cornelius Pass Advisory Volunteers Needed

Multnomah County is recruiting volunteers to serve on a Community Advisory Committee that will provide important input during planning for safety improvements on NW Cornelius Pass Road. They are seeking volunteers who represent the diversity of Cornelius Pass Road users, including residents in and near the Skyline Boulevard area, commuters (not living in the area), and local businesses.

Prescription Drug Disposal, Saturday 10/26    
pills3.jpg Got some unneeded or expired medications? Dispose of them safely by taking them to a prescription drug drop-off. The drop site is anonymous, and medications will be incinerated so they will not go into the water supply.

Acceptable items include prescription and over-the-counter medications, pet medications, and vitamins. Not accepted are inhalers, biohazardous materials, and sharps/syringes. See flyer for more details.

Portland Comp Plan Update & Map App 
The City of Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability has published the Comprehensive Plan - WorkingDraft Part 2, and are launching a round of public outreach to share this large body of work with the community and solicit public feedback. The Comprehensive Plan Update is a long-range plan for the growth and development of Portland through 2035. Working Draft Part 1 was published in January 2013 and contains the draft goals and policies.

Working Draft Part 2 consists of two products: 1) The online Map App, an interactive series of maps showing the geography and location of various policy proposals; and 2) the Citywide Systems Plan, a 20-year, coordinated infrastructure plan for the City of Portland.

Linnton Partnering on Invasive Plant Removal
The Linnton Neighborhood Association, property owners, and community members will be participating in The Forest Park Conservancy's new "citizen-led restoration" program - working to help preserve Forest Park habitat by removing invasive species from properties surrounding the park. Other partners in this project include the West Multnomah County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Backyard Habitat Program. An expert guest panel will discuss habitat restoration at the next LNA meeting on November 6, 7:00 p.m., at the Linnton Community Center. The first workday will be Saturday, December 7. More than 150 homeowners on the perimeter of Forest Park have signed up so far. If you would like to have your property included, want to volunteer, or have questions, contact Rob Lee.
Goose Hollow Transportation Survey
The Goose Hollow Foothills League (GHFL) would like to hear your opinions about parking and transportation safety in the neighborhood. Goose Hollow residents, business owners and employees, and students to share their thoughts and concerns by participating in a brief, online Parking and Transportation Survey. The results of this survey will help the GHFL Board identify priorities for improving the traffic and safety environment in the Hollow. 
Community Reminders 
NW Neighborhoods Parks & Rec Grants

The Northwest Neighborhoods Parks and Recreation Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation takes proposals from qualified nonprofit and public organizations for grants to support the construction and renovation of parks and recreation facilities in Northwest Portland. Applications are due on November 1. Recent grants for projects have ranged from $3,500 to $75,000. Leaf Day Opt-Out 

The City's annual leaf collection program for street trees will begin for the NW/Inner SW neighborhoods in December. November 1 is the deadline to opt out of the program and avoid charges. For more information about the Leaf Pick Up program, including parking restrictions, collection dates, payment, opt out, and how to find out if you're in a leaf pick up zone, visit the Portland Bureau of Transportation's leaf day website.null
