Greetings Neighbors,
Happy Autumn Equinox! Did you miss out on spring cleaning? Then make a clean sweep with fall - bring your trash, recyclables and shreddables to our Annual Recycling and Cleanup Event and Fundraiser tomorrow! Anyone is welcome to take advantage of this opportunity to dispose, recycle and shred, so tell your friends to head over and send them the directions. We're asking for a $10 donation per visit. See below for more details.

NWNW Annual Recycling and Cleanup Event
Here's your chance to get rid of bulky household waste, stacks of shreddable papers, old furniture, and more - without having to take a trip to the dump! Just come by Trinity Episcopal tomorrow - we'll even help unload your car.
We'll be accepting the following:
- Mixed Waste/General Rubbish (non-toxic and legal materials only)
- Electronics (with some restrictions)
- Printer Cartridges
- Household Items (gently-used and free of stains or tears, to be donated to Community Warehouse. See list of most needed items here .)
Items that we cannot accept include:
- Plastics
- Metal Scraps
- Yard Debris
- Hazardous Waste (See Metro's website for more information.)
- Packing Peanuts
Suggested donation is $10 per visit. All donations go directly to NWNW to support our services to our 12 coalition neighborhoods.
Date: Saturday, September 21, 2013
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (shredding from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. only)
Place: Trinity Episcopal parking lot, enter on NW Davis St. near the corner of NW 19th Ave. (see map)

Slabtown Festival in NW Portland
After you drop your stuff off at our recycling event, head up to the other end of 23rd Avenue for the annual Slabtown Festival. Celebrate historic Northwest Portland, and stop by to visit the Northwest District Association volunteers to find out what what's going in the neighborhood today.

Community Forum About Vista Bridge
Now that an interim suicide-prevention barrier has been installed on the Vista Bridge, the City of Portland is turning to the community to gather input for a long-term installation compatible with the bridge's historic design. You are invited to join a community conversation with Portland City Commissioner Steve Novick to discuss design possibilities and funding options for the Vista Bridge. Summit Aims to Bring Back Civility
 Do you have concerns about livability on our city streets, sidewalks, public transportation and park areas? Have you encountered rude, unsavory, or threatening behaviors walking around downtown Portland? Many feel the issue is impacting local businesses, affecting residents' quality of life, and harming our city's reputation with visitors. The Downtown Public Safety Advisory Committee's Civility Taskforce has organized a Portland Civility Summit, a presentation and discussion that will discuss the problem, show potential solutions, and talk about how you can help. Neighborhood Annual Meetings & Elections
 Several neighborhoods are having their annual meetings and elections in October. Be sure to note deadlines for nominations or for applying for voting membership. Arlington Heights Neighborhood Association Social & Annual Meeting
Arlington Heights Neighbors are cordially invited to the 2013 AHNA Annual Meeting and Social on Monday, October 14. Come and renew old acquaintances, meet new neighbors, and catch up on neighborhood news. This is a great opportunity to find out what is going on and weigh in on neighborhood issues. If convenient, bring an appetizer or snack to share; beverages will be provided. Parking is available near East Sylvan Middle School behind the fire station.
Meeting topics are scheduled to include:
- Paid parking in Washington Park
- Japanese Garden Expansion plans
- Reservoir construction & the Community Sounding Board
- And the election of new board members

Westside Tree Pruning Volunteer Day
If you enjoy the leaf-lined streets and walkways of Northwest Portland, consider volunteering to preserve this arborial heritage.
The Westside Portland Tree Guild is a group of concerned citizens dedicated to the health and stability of the urban canopy in Portland's westside neighborhoods.
They will be hosting a tree pruning volunteer day on Saturday, October 5. Help maintain the neighborhood's street trees while learning about pruning techniques.

Two Community Project Grants Available
Metro Central Enhancement Grant Program
Got a grand plan for a community project? Residents, community groups, local nonprofit organizations, schools and others encouraged to apply. Approximately $72,000 is available for local improvement projects in 2014. Pre-application deadline is 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013. NW Neighborhoods Parks & Rec Grants
This is a grant opportunity for NW Portland nonprofit organizations. The Northwest Neighborhoods Parks and Recreation Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation has taken proposals from qualified nonprofit and public organizations for grants to support the construction and renovation of parks and recreation facilities in Northwest Portland. Applications are due on November 1st of each year (or the previous Friday if the 1st falls on a weekend.) Recent grants for projects have ranged from $3,500 to $75,000.  This popular Pearl District cleanup event is back! Come join neighborhood volunteers picking up litter and removing graffiti.

Heads Up: Leaf Pick Up Opt-Out
November 1 is the deadline to opt out of the City's leaf collection program. For more information about the Leaf Pick Up program, including parking restrictions, collection dates, payment, opt out, and how to find out if you're in a leaf pick up zone, visit the Portland Bureau of Transportation's leaf day website.
