August 2013
Greetings Neighbors,

Summer keeps rolling along, but it won't be here much longer, so we hope you'll get out to take part in our neighborhoods' many upcoming outdoor events, including Movies in the Park, the Pearl Party, and neighborhood cleanups.

We'd also like to remind you that NWNW's big Annual Recycling and Cleanup Event and Fundraiser is coming up next month, so get ready to jettison your unwanted junk. Anyone is welcome to take advantage of this opportunity to dispose, recycle and shred, so tell your friends to head over and send them the directions. We're asking for a $10 donation per visit. See below for more details.
Spiff Up the Streets of Old Town Chinatown

Join members of the Old Town Chinatown Community Association as they beautify the neighborhood. This cleanup will focus on NW 3rd and 4th Avenues between Burnside and Glisan, and will include litter pickup, graffiti removal, and streetscape maintenance. Wear closed-toed shoes and bring your own gardening gloves and tools.

Work parties will be organized in two shifts each day: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m and 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. A simple celebration will be held at the end of each shift, where volunteers will receive a pass to Lan Su Chinese Garden.

Please register by August 19th, by signing up on the SOLVE website or by contacting Helen Ying (503 803-4555).  For more information, download flier here

ParaNorman and Film Fest in The Fields Park
Next Saturday, August 24, bring a lawn chair or blanket down to The Fields park and watch ParaNorman (rated PG), co-sponsored by the Pearl District Neighborhood Association and Portland Parks and Rec. The film starts at dusk, but get there at 6:30 p.m. for pre-show music and ping pong. In keeping with the theme of the film, there will also be a zombie costume contest! Friday, August 30, through Sunday, September 1, The Fields will host
three free, outdoor screenings as part of the new Portland Film Festival. Find more information about this event at the PDNA website, and see the PFF schedule for full details and film descriptions.

Guy Bodin Recognized with Livability Award
Congratulations to Pearl District Neighborhood Association volunteer Guy Bodin, who was honored with a Livability Award from the City's Office of Neighborhood Involvement Crime Prevention program. Guy has been a dedicated PDNA volunteer for many years as a member of their Livability and Safety Committee and Graffiti Busters team.
Guy Bodin with neighborhood Crime Prevention Coordinator Jenni Pullen
Graffiti Abatement Coordinator Dennis LoGiudice called Bodin "
one of the most dedicated volunteers we've ever had the pleasure of working with," adding that Bodin's photographic documentation of graffiti has been invaluable in bringing cases against prolific taggers. Keep up the good work, Guy!
Chapman Swifts Return in September
It's almost that time of year when our feathered friends the Vaux's Swifts come back to roost in the chimney of Chapman Elementary School, near Wallace Park at NW 26th Ave. and NW Pettygrove St. Their nightly return is a stunning show that attracts hundreds of spectators every sunset through the month of September. The Swifts' flying maneuvers are dazzling, and the action can take a dramatic turn when a bird of prey arrives on the scene.

With 500 to 3500 visitors each night, this can put some stress on the surrounding neighborhood, so if you come to watch the show, please be considerate of those living nearby: keep noise levels down; leash and pick up after your dog; dispose of trash; and remember that alcoholic beverages and smoking are illegal on public school grounds. If you're coming from outside of the area, remember that parking is very limited (and enforced); consider biking or taking public transportation (TriMet lines 15, 77 and the streetcar stop nearby).

The Vaux's Swifts are one of the unique and amazing sights of Portland. For more information about the Swifts, visit the Portland Audubon Society website. Audubon volunteers will be at the Chapman School most evenings to provide information to the public.
Goose Hollow Annual Picnic

Bring proof of residency or business/property ownership to the GHFL table in the plaza (corner of SW Morrison St. & SW 20th Ave.) before the game (5:00 - 6:00 p.m.) to receive your tickets. Tickets are limited to 6 per family and are required for children ages 3 and up. Space is limited to 100 participants. First come, first served.

The Pearl Party gives residents a chance to mingle, gives businesses and restaurants a chance to showcase their wares, and gives everyone an opportunity to give a little contribution back to the neighborhood association that benefits them all.
