Greetings Neighbors,

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer and getting out to some of the many free outdoor events going on this time of year, in our neighborhoods and across the city. See below for information about concerts in the park, neighborhood picnics, and more.

Just as a reminder, many neighborhood boards and committees are on their summer schedule, so check the update section at the end of this newsletter and our online calendar for the latest meeting information.
Downtown Yard Sale and Senior Choir Concert
Come down to the Park Blocks tomorrow to hunt for second-hand treasures at the Portland Downtown Neighborhood Association's Annual Yard Sale in the Park Blocks. This year's event features a concert by the Downtown Senior Choir, a collaboration between the DNA, Meals on Wheels People, and PSU's Art and Social Practice program, and supported by a grant from the Office of Neighborhood Involvement and Neighbors West-Northwest.

Place: Park Blocks between SW Market & Clay

While you're down in the Park Blocks, stop by the Portland Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m, and check out the AfricaFest (12:00 - 5:00 p.m), a celebration of African cultures featuring crafts, food, and performance, also in the PSU Park Blocks.
Saturday Market's 40th Anniversary

Join Portland Saturday Market, the nation's largest arts and crafts market in continuous operation, in celebrating its 40th anniversary. The two-day celebration will include numerous activities, daily giveaways, artist demonstrations, plus the Market's talented artisans selling their original handcrafted wares, an international food court, and a main stage featuring local Pacific Northwest favorites.

Summer Free for All
Portland Parks and Rec Summer Free For All is back, and many neighborhoods have partnered again with PP&R to bring you free entertainment every week through September. This year, summer concerts return to Wallace and Couch parks on Thursday evenings, and in Downtown, the Lovejoy Fountain Park will feature concerts on August 9 and 16. And don't forget the Washington Park Summer Festival, with performances nightly from August 1 - 10! Prefer cinema? The Fields Park and Director Park will host films in August and September.

Hillside Movie in the Park
The Hillside Neighborhood Association presents the family-friendly comedy Roxanne (rated PG). The film tells the story of large-nosed C.D. Bales (Steve Martin), who helps another man woo the object of his affection (Darryl Hannah). While C.D. falls for Roxanne, she falls for his personality but the other guy's looks. Pre-movie entertainment includes a rock wall! Bring a picnic, a blanket or chair to sit on and enjoy an evening with family, friends, and neighbors! This event is free. Download flyer here.

NNO Kickoff and Community Awards
National Night Out You're invited to the kick off party for the 2013 National Night Out celebration in Portland and presentation of the Annual Crime Prevention & Livability Volunteer Awards. Come meet star crime prevention and livability volunteers from around the city and talk with officials, including City Commissioners, plus Crime Prevention, Police, Fire, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications and other public safety staff. Downtown National Night Out
The Downtown Neighborhood is again hosting what will probably be the largest NNO event in Portland. Come on down for free food, drinks, ice cream, popcorn, and raffle prizes, along with some outstanding music by the Usual Suspects. Bring your kids and enjoy the opportunity to explore a fire truck while the firefighters grill up some burgers!

Linnton Summer Picnics
Linnton neighbors will gather again this summer for a series of picnics hosted around the area. Burgers, hot dogs, and sodas will be provided. Bring your favorite picnic dish, veggie, fruit or pasta salad, or dessert.

picnic host encourages people to bring a photo from the past
or present that best demonstrates life on the hill.

Washington Park Reservoirs Meetings
The Washington Park Reservoirs Improvements Project will replace Reservoir 3 with a 15-million gallon underground tank with a reflecting pool on top, and decommission the existing Washington Park Reservoir 4. The Portland Water Bureau will be having an open house July 25, as well as a series of  "sounding board" meetings to capture public input.

If you are unable to attend the open house, please visit the project website between July 25 and August 5 to review displays and comment on project issues and ideas online.

Goose Hollow Annual Picnic  
Join your neighbors at the Goose Hollow Neighborhood Picnic to watch a reserve game between the Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake. Jeld-Wen Field and the Goose Hollow Foothills League are sponsoring this party for Goose Hollow neighbors -- residents, business owners and property owners within the GHFL boundaries. Come join your neighbors and cheer on the Timbers to victory! Free admission, food and drinks - fun for all!  Details to follow, stay tuned. 22nd Annual Pearl Party
Pearl District Neighborhood Assoc. Logo
The Pearl District Neighborhood Association's annual fundraiser brings the party to the streets for the 22nd year. Turn out to appreciate all this neighborhood has to offer, including a sumptuous sampling from local restaurants.

NWNW Recycling Event and Clean Up
The coalition-wide recycling event and cleanup returns this fall on Saturday, September 21! The event will be held in the east parking lot of Trinity-Episcopal Cathedral. Save the date and save your stuff. This year we'll be featuring a reuse/swap area. Additional details about what we're accepting coming soon!

Many neighborhoods and committees take a hiatus in July or August, or have an altered summer schedule. Check the NWNW online calendar for most recent updates 

 

Portland Downtown Neighborhood Association 

General membership meeting on July 23 is cancelled.  

Board meeting from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., Tuesday July 23 at  Meals on Wheels People Elm Court Center, 1032 SW 12th. 

No General Membership or Board meeting in August.

Livability & Safety Committee

The committee will meet on Monday August 5 and Monday August 19. There will be no meeting in the month of September. Meetings will resume on the first Monday of the month starting October 7. Meetings are 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at Cupcake Jones, 307 NW 10th Ave.

The Emergency Prep Committee is now meeting on the second Monday of the month at the Ecotrust Building Second Floor Office Space, 907 NW Irving St.
