June 2013
Greetings Neighbors,

The official start of summer is one week away, so of course we've kicked off the season in proper Portland style with a week of rain. Nonetheless, we've seen plenty of folks out and about, strolling, cycling, or stopping by the NW and downtown farmers markets. Hang in there just a bit longer and it will be time for picnics, outdoor concerts, and movies in the park! Read on to see what's coming up in the month ahead.
Solo Show Explores Vietnamese Heritage
In August of 1968, a farm girl from rural Indiana stepped off a plane in Saigon. Threads tells her amazing, riveting - and true - story.

Playwright and performer Tonya Jone Miller feels she grew up in a "Vietnam vacuum." The child of a Vietnamese man and an American farm girl from rural Indiana who found herself teaching English in Saigon at the height of the war, Threads is Ms. Miller's dramatic recounting of her mother's incredible story and the universal connections that bind us all.

Sponsored in part by Neighbors West-Northwest and the Office of Neighborhood Involvement through the Neighborhood Small Grant Program, this one-woman show will be performed at the CoHo Theater from June 20 through June 23 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. Please be sure to join us at the Friday, June 21 performance for a special post-show reception featuring Vietnamese foods and a discussion with the playwright's mother and other special guests. This production promises to be an important and enlightening community event.

Northwest District Association AQC Report
By Sharon Genasci, NWDA AQC Chair

The Air Quality Committee's primary focus for some months has been the NWDA/Con-way Clean Diesel GNA Committee negotiations. The aim is a good neighbor agreement that will curtail diesel emissions and lessen construction disruption during the ten years of planned construction in nearly 20 acres of the NE corner in the NW neighborhood.  The effort is led by NWDA Board member Kathy Sharp, with Sharon Genasci (Air Quality Committee Chair), Kevin Downing (clean diesel advocate at DEQ) and David Paul (environmental attorney) representing NWDA in the negotiations. They are meeting with a Con-way team that includes a representative of one of the lead developer teams. To date, no agreements have been reached. See the draft good neighbor agreement, written by the NWDA committee with neighborhood consultation, here.

The meeting scheduled for June 3 was postponed so that Con-way could study the new GNA draft more fully. It is intended that the GNA will bind all future land owners as well as contractors, and it is hoped that developers and contractors interested in the property will see the value of working with the neighbors to lessen the burden of diesel emissions and other impacts during the construction.
