November 2012
Greetings Neighbors,
This is the time of year to give and be grateful, with neighbors getting together to celebrate the holiday season, and to give to those in need in our community. Find out about what's going on, plus other announcements about special meetings and volunteer opportunities in your neighborhood.
NINA 5th Annual Food Drive
It's time for the Northwest Industrial Neighborhood Associations's 5th Annual Food Drive, which for the third year in a row benefits Lift Urban Portland!

See this flyer for more information and most wanted food items, which include canned soups/stews/chili, canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, and shelf-stable milk. Lift Urban Portland Food Drive

This year donations are needed more than ever.  Federal subsidies to the Oregon Food Bank, from which Lift Urban Portland receives most of their food, have been greatly reduced - that's about $500 - $800 worth of food per month that they no longer have access to. Yet, the need for food continues.

Lift Urban Portland feeds about 900 low-income people per month through the Food for Kids Backpacks program, food box deliveries to isolated neighbors, a monthly harvest share distribution of fresh produce, and their twice-weekly food pantry. Now more than ever your cash contribution will go further if you increase your donation from last year.

If your business would like to participate in the food drive, contact Barbara Macnab (503 255-3387) to indicate how many barrels you would like delivered to your location.  NINA will coordinate the delivery and pick up of the barrels.  The timing of  this year's event will begin with barrel delivery the week of 11/26 and wrap up with barrels being collected the week of 12/7 (earlier or later pickups can be arranged).

Lastly, please mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 11, 2011 for the NINA Annual Holiday Meet & Greet held at Holiday Inn Express, West Hills Meeting Room, 2333 NW Vaughn from 7:30 - 9:00  a.m.

Tree Lightings in Pioneer & Jamison Squares
Larger-than-life holiday trees are about to light up two of Portland's favorite public spaces. Friday, November 23, at 5:30 p.m. the tree in Pioneer Courthouse Square will be ablaze with 14,000 lights. The ceremony and celebration features a community sing-along of holiday favorites, with Thomas Lauderdale and Pink Martini. Gather 'round the tree in Portland's living room.
Saturday, November 24, meet at 5:30 p.m. at Jamison Square for caroling and treats, with the tree lighting at 6:00 p.m. Happy Holidays!
Sylvan-Highlands Special Board Meeting
The Sylvan-Highlands Neighborhood Association Board of Directors has called a special board meeting on Tuesday, November 27, for the purpose of formulating written testimony and talking points in response to the City Council resolution on a Washington Park Transportation and Parking Management Plan. Written comments from neighbors can be collected at that time. Neighbor comments will be delivered to the City Council clerk to be entered as testimony on this issue. Neighbors may also forward comments to Bryan Burch at info@sylvanhighlands.org.
The special board meeting is open to all members of the public. At the board's discretion, members of SHNA may be allowed to comment during this meeting. The meeting is expected to last about one hour.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact any SHNA board member or info@sylvanhighlands.org.

Winter Shelters Open for Cold Weather Season

Portland's wet and cold winters are hard and potentially deadly for those experiencing homelessness. Women are especially vulnerable, and according to this Transition Project factsheet, 420 women are unsheltered in Portland on any given night.

Transition Projects is trying to spread the word about the opening of a 70-bed winter shelter for women, located in the Medford Hotel building at 506 NW Fifth Ave. The shelter will be open November 19 through next April. The Salvation Army's SAFES women's shelter has also expanded services for winter months.

You can find a list of addresses and hours of area winter shelters and other resources here. Those in need of services can also call 2-1-1 for assistance and information. If you'd like to contribute to Transition Projects' annual coat and blanket drive, check out this list for drop-off locations in NW Portland and elsewhere.

Leaf Day Reminder
The City's annual leaf pickup program has started. Pickup dates for westside leaf zones begin November 24 and continue through December 7.

Call 503 865-LEAF (5323) or visit the City's website to find out if you are in a leaf pickup zone and when your leaf day is scheduled. Tow-away restrictions may be in effect during pickup days.
Give the Gift of Preparedness
This holiday season, to show someone you really care, give them an emergency preparedness kit from Ready Set Go Kits,  and benefit a neighborhood at the same time. From now till December 31, Ready Set Go Kits will donate 10% of your purchase to help fund programs of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association.
Ready Set Go Kts Logo

Ready Set Go Kits is a local business that offers a variety of preassembled kits to provide you with 72 hours of emergency supplies to address vital needs: water, food, shelter, warmth, light, communication and first aid. Kits are available for home, car, school and office.

Buy a kit for yourself or for loved ones, and use code NWNW so 10% of your purchase price is donated to the PDNA to help keep the neighborhood clean, safe and thriving. The kits are marked down right now, with free shipping on orders over $50 - and you don't need to be a neighborhood or coalition member to take advantage of those deals. Visit the Ready Set Go Kits website to learn more.

Hillside Neighborhood Annual Meeting

The Hillside neighborhood has a community center, great people and location, location, location.  Watching out for this wonderful place is a neighborhood association that advocates on behalf of the community center, plans local events like July 4th picnics, and intervenes when the city gets some odd ideas about what's best for it.

The Hillside Neighborhood Association is a group of volunteers who engage to have a positive impact on the livability on this corner of the city.  We meet just once a month on the second Tuesday of every month.  If you'd like to help keep Hillside a great place to live and have a voice in what comes next, please come and join us December 11th for our annual meeting.  We'll save you a chair.

Neighborhood Tree Group & Inventory Results
NW Trees
During summer 2012, Northwest District neighborhood volunteers conducted a street tree inventory with Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry. Seventy-five volunteers contributed 379 hours identifying, mapping, measuring, and assessing every street tree in the neighborhood. The results are now available here.

The Northwest District area has over 5,000 trees, with an overabundance of red maple. Roughly 10% the trees are dead or in poor condition. And 762 planting spaces are available for planting.

Are you concerned about the current street tree population and insuring a healthy street tree canopy for future generations? A Neighborhood Tree Group is forming to develop short term and long term strategies and to turn those strategies into actions, which may include:
  • Identifying potential Heritage Tree Candidates
  • Organizing a neighborhood-wide tree planting
  • Developing a program to inoculate our elm trees for Dutch Elm Disease
Join the Tree Group! The group's first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 29, 10:00 a.m., location to be determined. To learn more and get involved, please contact Mary Ann Pastene.
NWDA AQC Works on Con-way GNA
The Northwest District Association Air Quality Committee is working with Juliet Hyams from the NWDA Board on a Clean Diesel Good Neighbor Agreement with Con-way for the 20-acre (ten-year) development going into the northeastern part of the neighborhood. We are hoping to convince future contractors that a neighborhood already high in harmful diesel fumes should insist on clean diesel during the construction. - Sharon Genasci, AQC Chair

The Air Quality Committee will not hold a meeting in December.  The next meeting will be on January 14th at the Silver Cloud Inn Breakfast Room at 7:00 pm.
