June 2012
Greetings Neighbors,

Is it summer yet? We're just a few days away from the solstice, and the weather is finally starting to catch up. We're all looking forward to warmer days ahead, and some outdoor activities: bike tours, Fourth of July, Concerts in the Park, and more. See you out there in the sunshine!
Historical NW Neighborhood Bike Tour
The dream of the 1890s is alive in NW Portland! (If that doesn't mean anything, check out this musical number from Portlandia.)

Roll out your penny farthing high-wheeler and wax up your handlebar moustache - or just your handlebars - for a tour of historical sights and places in the Northwest District and Old Town.

Local historians will guide this tour designed by the Historic Preservation League of Oregon. See remnants of the Lewis & Clark Exposition, weird public works projects, Croatian-Irish churches, and architectural quirks of the NW. The ride will be a mostly flat 6 miles at a cruising pace. Ride-goers will receive a souvenir bound tour booklet featuring historical photos and facts about stops on the tour.  This event is part of Pedalpalooza.

Date: Saturday, June 23, 2012
Time: 3:15pm - 5:15pm
Place: NW Cultural Center, 1819 NW Everett Street (tour starts inside main lobby; there are bike racks outside)

Summer Concerts in NW Parks

Help Us Plan a Super-sized Cleanup
NWNW is planning a bulky waste cleanup and recycling event for August 18th and we need your help! This cleanup will let neighbors dispose of large items and waste not collected by regular collection services, and will be a coalition-wide event. Specific items to be accepted have yet to be determined.

We are currently seeking volunteers to serve on a planning committee for the event and/or help out on event day! Planning committee volunteers will help NWNW staff determine what types of materials to collect and recycle on event day, select a central location for the cleanup, and ensure that a diversity of neighborhood interests are met by this cleanup. Volunteers at the event itself will help customers dispose of their items, collect fees, and perform other functions as necessary.

If you're interested in helping keep our neighborhoods clean and sustainable, contact Jen (503 823-4265) to ask questions or sign up.
NWDA Tree Inventory Needs Volunteers
The Northwest District is one of three neighborhoods in the City of Portland's 2012 tree inventory. Volunteers will identify, measure, and map street trees. This is a great opportunity to participate in tree stewardship, improve your tree identification skills and learn more about assessing tree health and site conditions.

Team Leaders must attend a training session and commit to participate in three inventory work days. Training is offered on Saturday, June 23, at SE Uplift at 3534 SE Main St. Sign up for one session, either 8:30 a.m. - noon or 1:00 - 4:30 p.m. You can register for the training online.

Inventory work days will be held on Saturdays from 8:30 am to noon from June through September. Register as either a Team Leader or as a general volunteer. The NWDA work days are 7/288/259/8, &  9/22. For more information, see the NWDA website

Networking Event to Build Partnerships
If you're planning to apply for a Neighborhood Small Grant, are developing a community project, or have an ongoing project, you may benefit from working in partnership with another group or organization. Let us help you make the connections you need!

NWNW is offering a unique networking opportunity, so let us know who you would like to meet. Are you interested in land use, transportation, environmental concerns, equity issues? Please let us know your interests in advance so we can extend targeted invitations to your potential partners and you'll get the most from this event.
